Sporting Injuries On Film

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that every sensible person loves a good sports movie. Hell, even people who can’t abide actual sport can’t fail to be roused by the Rocky overture or, um, The Mighty Ducks. An occupational hazard in a sports film, though, is the increased likelihood of a bone-crunching or leg-snapping injury, something that is never more clearly illustrated than in the brilliantly visceral, utterly absorbing boxing thriller Bleed For This, available digitally and on Blu-ray and DVD from March 27th courtesy of Icon Film Distribution, and as showcased in the below list of ‘look away now’ moments from sporting cinema:

Bleed For This (2016)
This underdog story starring Miles Teller as you’ve never seen before, documents one of sport’s most incredible comebacks. The film follows the cocky and sure footed Vinny Pazienza (Teller), who teams up with one of the sport’s most celebrated trainers (Aaron Eckhart) in an effort to win world tiles, which he does in style! However, months after the bout which sees Vinny at the top of his game, it all comes crashing down, as he severely injures his spine in a head-on car crash, and doctors tell him he’ll likely never walk again, let alone throw a punch. After some rest time and getting a metal ‘halo’ spine brace painfully screwed and unscrewed from his head, Vinny works on getting back in the ring and defies belief by winning his title bout to win back his championship, to the disbelief of medical professionals across the globe!

Rush (2013)
Rush is a simply brilliant film. Whether you’re interested in Formula One or not, the cat and mouse relationship between James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) is impossible to look away from and made all the more real by their grudging respect for one another. There are plenty of rough and tumble moments and more than your fair share of horrifying crashes, but the moment that takes the biscuit for sheer horror is when Niki Lauda is pulled from his burning car and made to commence a truly horrifying session of having his lungs hoovered in an attempt to remove the effects of said blaze. Multiplexes everywhere played to the sound of lunches coming back for a second swipe at digestion and the scene is hard to un-see.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
This Will Ferrell/Jon C. Riley comedy is not only a hilarious look at the NASCAR world, but also insightful, as it shows the psychological damage the sport can inflict on a driver after a heavy accident. So much so that drivers apparently strip off and run round the track in their briefs yelling for Tom Cruise and Oprah to save them. Ricky Bobby (Ferrell) plays a pit crew member who gets a chance to race for a failing team, and manages to race his way up to being the face of the sport, taking his buddy Cal (Riley) with him. After the horrific accident – and the slightly embarrassing scenes that follow – Ricky’s rehabilitation to get himself race-ready again includes his father putting a fierce cougar in the car with him to help his courage. Ricky manages to get back on the track and beat his former partner-come-enemy in a literal sprint to the finish. Now that’s what we call Shake and bake!

Million Dollar Baby (2004)
I bet you never thought a miss-placed stool could be so lethal. The second boxing movie on our list takes a look at the female boxing world, as Hilary Swank pushes herself to the limit to become a pro, in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-sweeping feature film. After training with the dynamic duo of Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, Maggie (Swank) gets her chance to go toe to toe with some of the best in the game. But during a particularly ferocious bout, after the bell has been called, a competitor attacks Maggie with her gloves down, and then falls onto the stall that has been put in her corner, breaking her neck. Unlike our man Vinny, Maggie was unable to overcome her horrific injury but treasured her friendship with her coaches that gave her life meaning more than any stupid belt.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002)
Okay, so the jury might be out on whether Quidditch is an actual sport (notwithstanding the fact that groups of deeply single people gather to try and play it in real life), but Harry Potter’s favourite pastime after feeling up the sister of his best friend is certainly brutal. This is illustrated repeatedly throughout the megalithic film series, but never more so than in Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets when Harry falls from his broom and breaks his arm. Not in and of itself a horrific sporting injury, granted, but when Kenneth Branagh’s Gilderoy Lockhart attempts a quick fix that turns Harry’s arm to jelly a nation of under tens had to look away...

Escape To Victory (1981)
In a twisted alternate reality where Pele, Bobby Moore and Ossy Ardiles are incarcerated in a WWII POW camp alongside Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone it seems entirely natural that the camp commandant (Max von Sydow, obviously) would encourage a POW vs German soldiers football match, no? Directed by the mighty John Huston, this mad-as-jam football/WWII mash-up is utter, utter nonsense but incredibly hard to dislike. In a film full of shark jumping moments however, none is more barmy than the decision the team make to get rid of their perfectly serviceable goalkeeper and put Sylvester Stallone in his place despite no discernible prior experience of the Beautiful Game. How, you ask? Well, they stamp on the goalkeeper’s arm to break it, just so good old Sly can try to escape along with the rest of the team after the match.

BLEED FOR THIS IS OUT ON BLU-RAY, DVD AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS FROM MARCH 27TH, 2017

Best Boxing Films

Everyone loves a true underdog story, a modern day tale that often features prominently in the sport of boxing. Put together a few punches and a competitor at rock bottom, looking for a way up, and you have a classic boxing film on your hands! With so many of these films playing on our human nature to empathise with the underdog, it’s no wonder that boxing films like Raging Bull and Rocky have gone on to become classics in the history of cinema. With their ability to make an impact on audiences in any social climate and stand the test of time, the boxing world continues to fascinate audiences in modern cinema, with films like Southpaw and more recently Bleed For This packing a real punch.

In honour of the DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital release of Bleed for This on March 27th, we take a look at some of the past knockouts of the genre, as we countdown the greatest ever boxing movies to hit the big screen.

Rocky (1979)
A film that would skyrocket Sylvester Stalone’s career and launch a global franchise, Rocky is the epitome of a great sports film. Rocky Balboa (Stalone) is a struggling boxer from Philadelphia who works as a debt collector for a loan shark. Spending occasional time in the ring, Rocky is a small-time fighter looking for an in. His chance comes when a champion boxer, Apollo Creed, comes to Philly with the aim of fighting a local boxer. At the same time, Rocky comes across a shy woman, Adrian (Talia Shire), who happens to be the sister of his best friend Paulie. While Rocky and Adrian’s romance heats up, Creed sets his sights on Rocky being the man he fights. After months of training, the intense fight takes place, setting the stage for what would be one of the greatest upsets in boxing.

Raging Bull (1980)
It’s a film like this that makes you remember how good Robert De Niro is. This riveting film follows Jake La Motta (De Niro), a middleweight boxing champion who has a tendency to bring his boxing aggression home with him. Plagued by anger and jealousy, we bear witness to a torn family going through some of the hardest challenges in life, while Jake remains desperate to stay in the game. De Niro’s powerful portrayal earned him an Academy Award and made director Martin Scorsese a household name, cementing their partnership as one of the greatest of all time. This film really was one of the first to truly shed light on the harsh realities that boxers go through and how the glory begins to fade after a win.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)
One of many great films in the back-catalogue of director Clint Eastwood, this boxing movie takes the genre in a new direction. In a world filled with male led sports films, Million Dollar Baby helps show that women can pack a punch when needed to as well! Frankie Dunn (Eastwood) is a boxing trainer who has lost almost every opportunity he had to rise up. Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) is an amateur boxer who seeks help from the veteran turned trainer, who form a special bond on their way glory. Filled with drama and intense bouts, the most gut-punching part of the film comes at the end with a famous twist no one saw coming.

Cinderella Man (2005)
“I have to believe that when things are bad, I can change them” – and that he did. A stellar cast including Russell Crowe, Paul Giamatti, and Renee Zellweger made this film into a hit and earned three Academy Award nominations. Throughout the duration of the film, we fall in love with the Braddock family as they fight to make it through the Great Depression. With his family in mind, Jim Braddock (Crowe) re-enters the ring with the hope of securing his families’ future. After winning fight after fight, Braddock becomes the hero for the little guy and soon rises to the top. With only one man to beat, it becomes his most important fight as his opponent is not only a heavyweight champion, but has already killed two people in the ring. As well as highlighting the clear lack of health & safety in the sport during the 1920’s, the film manages to keep you gripped both in and outside of the ring.

The Fighter (2010)
Christian Bale proved he can step out of the bat suit and still kick ass in his Academy Award winning performance as Dicky Eklund. After losing his successful career in boxing to cocaine addiction that continues to plague him, Dicky goes on a quest to make his brother, played by Mark Wahlberg, one of the greats. Full of deep seeded family drama with lines drawn, ”Irish”  Mickey Ward is faced with the harrowing decision of which path to follow as his impending lightweight championship fight draws nearer. This film about family and triumph is definitely a must-watch, if the career best performances from a fantastic all-star cast didn’t hook you already.

Southpaw (2015)
An indie favourite in the world of boxing films, Southpaw is an inspiring piece on how you can rise up despite loss and grief. Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is living the best kind of life. He’s a successful boxer, has a loving wife (played by the wonderful Rachel McAdams), and a beautiful daughter. His world comes crashing down after an altercation with a rival turns violent, leaving his wife bleeding out in his arms. Crippled by grief, he turns to bad behaviour and ends up losing his daughter to child protective services. With the aim of getting his life and daughter back, he decides to un-hang his gloves and step back into the ring, which builds to a climactic fight against his former rival in an effort to win his title back. Although Jake’s shredded bod gained a lot of attention, this is boxing movie knows what its audience wants and provides it with an almighty right hook!

Bleed For This (2016)
Comeback stories don’t come much bigger than that of Vinny Pazienza. A world champion title holder, Vinny was one of the greatest boxers in the boxing world. All of which was placed in jeopardy after a serious car accident left his neck broken and with an ominous future. Bleed For This follows his incredible recovery, starring Miles Teller as the defiant warrior as he attempts to prove the haters wrong, and get one more chance to step toe-to-toe in the ring again. Against all odds and, more fundamentally, against doctor's orders, renowned trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart) helps Vinny return to the ring just 12 short months after the accident to compete in what could be the last fight of his life. Miles Teller cements his position as one of Hollywood’s most talented young actors in an unflinching and hugely entertaining boxing drama, delivering a performance that will knock audiences off their feet. In a good way.

Tomb Raider - First image of Alicia Vikander & Official Synopsis

Synopsis
Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone.

Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

DIRECTOR ROAR UTHAUG (The Wave)

"Being a longtime fan of the game, it's important to me to honor the Lara Croft legacy and capture that spirit.  It's great to know that there's such a passionate global fan base for Lara and her world, and our commitment to that will be evident in our movie.  What's different about this "Tomb Raider" movie is that it's an origin story for the big screen, focusing not only on Lara's strength and physical accomplishments but her humanity.  We see Lara as a young woman, smart and capable but largely unfocused, and follow her on a dangerous journey that will push her to her limits in every sense, and allow her to hone the skills she needs to ultimately become who she was meant to be.  As Lara Croft, Alicia Vikander is brilliant.  She brings great depth to a complex role that is both physically and emotionally demanding.  We hope this film will delight fans around the world and add another intriguing chapter to the Tomb Raider story."

PRODUCER GRAHAM KING (The Departed, Blood Diamond)

"I'm excited to be a part of this new Tomb Raider story, which introduces the origins of Lara Croft and delves into the humanity of this character. Alicia Vikander is a gifted actress that brings so much to this role. Our director, Roar Uthaug is extremely passionate and has an eye for scale as well as gritty realism.  It's been a wonderful experience shooting in various locations around South Africa and we hope that using these actual locations will give a grounded sense of reality.  It's our goal to make a film that will not only delight fans but enthrall a world-wide audience."

Snatched - Trailer - starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn

Free Fire - Official New Poster and New Images

Justine (Brie Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley) and a gang led by Vernon (Sharlto Copley) and Ord (Armie Hammer) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues.

The Promise - New Post and Trailer

It is 1914. As the Great War looms, the mighty Ottoman Empire is crumbling. Constantinople, the once vibrant, multicultural capital on the shores of the Bosporus, is about to be consumed by chaos. Michael Boghosian (Oscar Isaac), arrives in the cosmopolitan hub as a medical student determined to bring modern medicine back to Siroun, his ancestral village in Southern Turkey where Turkish Muslims and Armenian Christians have lived side by side for centuries.

Photo-journalist Chris Myers (Christian Bale), has come here only partly to cover geo-politics. He is mesmerized by his love for Ana (Charlotte le Bon), an Armenian artist he has accompanied from Paris after the sudden death of her father. When Michael meets Ana, their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between the two men. As the Turks form an alliance with Germany and the Empire turns violently against its own ethnic minorities, their conflicting passions must be deferred while they join forces to survive even as events threaten to overwhelm them.

The one promise that must be kept is to live on and tell the story.

THE PROMISE will be released in cinemas on 28 April 2017.
