Dominic Dromgoole Launches Open Palm Films & Announces 'Making Noise Quietly' CL

London, 23rd November
Former Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole launches film production company OPEN PALM FILMS. The independent film production company has recently wrapped their first production MAKING NOISE QUIETLY and a slate of further theatrical productions will be announced early 2017, all of which are privately funded.

MAKING NOISE QUIETLY is an adaptation of the Robert Holman’s acclaimed stage play & is directed by Dominic Dromgoole. The film stars Deborah Findlay (THE LADY IN THE VAN, SUITE FRANCAISE), Barbara Marten (THE MILL, ORANGES AND SUNSHINE), Trystan Gravelle (MR SELFRIDGE, NATIONAL TREASURE & ANONYMOUS), Geoffrey Streafeild (A ROYAL NIGHT OUT, RUSH), Luke Thompson (IN THE CLUB & Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK) & Matthew Tennyson who reprises his role from the stage production, last performed at the Donmar in 2012 for which he won the Evening Standard’s most promising newcomer. The film is produced by NFTS graduates Alexandra Breede and Jacob Thomas.

MAKING NOISE QUIETLY is a delicately poetic triptych of stories that paints a human picture of the subtly devastating effects of war and examines the bonds of suffering shared by us all. A conscientious objector and a roaming artist find tenderness as the carnage of the Second World War unfolds across the English Channel. A bereaved mother struggles with bitterness and love in recollecting her estranged son, lost in the Falklands. Deep in the Black Forest of Germany, an ageing holocaust survivor seeks to bring peace to disturbed young boy and his equally wild step-father.

Quote from Dominic Dromgoole
‘Making Noise Quietly is a contemporary classic drama, which has had a distinguished theatrical life, and has long been crying out for cinematic treatment.  It tells three stories of encounters between strangers, each happening on the edge of conflict.  The backdrop for each is distinct and alive with filmic possibilities: the lush beauty of the Kent weald in 1944, the enclosed front room in Redcar in 1982, invoking memories of Terence Davies and the claustrophobic expanse of the Black Forest in 1996. These landscapes, and the stories capacity to allow a powerful insight into the characters’ privacy, make for films that seem small but have an expansive resonance, proper chamber epics’

Quote from Alexandra Breede
‘It is a great privilege for me to work with Dominic Dromgoole on this new venture. Open Palm was created to produce character driven films that tell stories which resonate with audiences around the world in an honest and direct way. Our company is committed to showcasing the best and brightest talent in the industry on screen.’

Dog Eat Dog - out on Friday - New Clips

Ride shotgun on the craziest, funniest, most chaotic heist of the year as DOG EAT DOG, the psychedelic thriller starring Nicolas Cage (Kick-Ass, Face / Off) and Willem Dafoe (John Wick, Antichrist), is released in cinemas and on digital on November 18th, 2016 courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

Directed by visionary filmmaker Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull), DOG EAT DOG is the story of three ex-cons attempting to adapt themselves to civilian life following extended stints in jail. Life is tough, until they are offered a job by an eccentric mob boss (played by Paul Schrader himself) with a payoff too rich to turn down, and enough dough to buy their way out of their criminal lives and start over. All they have to do is kidnap a baby, the child of a colleague who's ripping the mob boss off. With the ‘three strikes’ law for life sentences looming over each of them and in the midst of battling their own personal demons, the smart money would be on rejecting the offer… But what the hell, they're going to do it, and they're going to do it their way!

Troy (Nicolas Cage), an aloof mastermind, seeks an uncomplicated, clean life but cannot get away from his hatred for the system. Diesel (Christopher Matthew Cook) is on the mob's payroll and his interest in his suburban lifestyle is waning. The loose cannon of the trio, Mad Dog (Willem Dafoe), is possessed by true demons within, which lead him from one precarious situation to the next. One more hit, one more jackpot, and they'll all be satisfied. But somehow the law keeps catching up with them wherever they go.

Paul Schrader and Matthew Wilder wrote the script based on Edward Bunker’s 1995 novel of the same name, who used his personal experiences of the criminal underworld as inspiration for the story and its troubled central characters.

DOG EAT DOG IS IN CINEMAS AND ON DEMAND FROM NOVEMBER 18TH, 2016

Live by Night - Main Trailer

Synopsis
Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.”  Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies.  The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw.  But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll.  The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).

Live by Night is released January 13, 2017

In attendance from the film were Warren Beatty with wife and co-star Annette Bening, Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Broderick (with wife Sarah Jessica Parker), Oliver Platt, Megan Hilty, Taissa Farmiga, Haley Bennett plus other special guests.

RULES DON’T APPLY arrives in UK cinemas January 2017.

Immersed in 50's Hollywood glamour, RULES DON'T APPLY stars Alec Baldwin, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Lily Collins, Steve Coogan, Alden Ehrenreich, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt and Martin Sheen.

An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty) whom they work for.

It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Hughes’ behaviour intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.

The Best Films on the Border

From a line drawn in the sand to armed guards and barbed wire fences, the US-Mexican border runs for over 3,000 kilometres through harsh desert and urban metropolises. Drugs, human-trafficking and illegal immigration are far from rare here, and many great modern movies focus on the heated exchanges, secretive transport and violent shoot-ups of this region. Desierto is one of these movies, following a rogue US vigilante who begins to hunt a group of immigrants trying to cross the border, so to follow its release on DVD we are taking a look at the best films in this perilous region.

Sicario (2015)
2015 birthed this academy award-nominated crime-thriller, starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. Following an FBI agent who is enlisted by a government task force to take down a Mexican drug cartel, Sicario flits between Arizona and Mexico as the team engage in intense man-hunts, brutal gunfire and heart-breaking loss.

Cartel Land (2015)
Once again focussing on the Mexican Drug War, Cartel Land is a documentary film about the vigilante community groups known as ‘Autodefensas’  and the Arizona Border Recon who battle against Mexico’s prevalent drug trade. By showing the parallel stories of vigilantes on both sites of the border, Cartel Land lays out what happens when the government institutions have failed and citizens take the law into their own hands.

No Country for Old Men (2007)
Drawing inspiration from the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men is set in the Texan desert where $2 million from a failed drug deal is picked up by the unassuming Llewelyn Moss. A hired hitman begins to hunt moss to acquire the lost money, beginning a fierce chase back and forth across the border that would make you scared of anyone you come across.

Sin Nombre (2009)
A Honduran girl and a Mexican boy caught up in gang life attempt to escape their misfortune by crossing into the US, but it is far from an easy journey. From perilous river crossings, to manslaughter and collusion, Sin Nombre is clearly deserving of its many awards and plays on nearly every emotion on this adventure across the border to a better life.

Desierto (2016)
At a time when Donald Trump’s many scandalous acts are common knowledge and treated as expected, Desierto (directed by the writer of Gravity) follows a lone American vigilante who massacres a group of immigrants attempting the cross the US-Mexican border. The small team of survivors frantically escape and attempt to survive not only the relentless pursuit of a crazed American but also the harsh and threatening Mexican desert that could easily consume them.
