Interview with Iqbal Ahmed - Writer and Director of The Answer

High Octane Pictures will offer The Answer, an exhilarating new sci-fi thriller from Iqbal Ahmed, this July.

Premiering on VOD 7/11, The Answer tells of an introverted young man that - after an attack- must follow clues left by his dead parents in order to figure out who is after him - and who he really is. Austin Hébert, Alexis Carra, and David S. Lee star.

Iqbal Ahmed joined us to talk about the film.

Is there any interesting story about how you got involved in The Answer?

For years, I’d been attached to a number of feature scripts.  And everyone always told me that I was a great candidate to be the director.  But no one had the guts to trust a first-time feature film director.  So I knew I had to make the movie myself.

So I independently raised the money to make the film. As hard as that was that was only the start!
Then I took a tally of all the resources I had– locations, crew, community support.  And I decided to make the feature film in my hometown, Danville, Virginia.  It was such a blast making a film in my hometown and revisiting locations that were part of my childhood. And I think the realness of actual locations really came through on screen. And it was a kick for all my family and friends to be there.

What interested you in telling this particular story?

The story for The Answer had been in my brain for years. I knew I wanted to tell a different kind of sci-fi action movie. I knew I wanted to make a movie about a guy who just wanted to mind his own business but was thrown into a world he never wanted to be a part of.

When I finally decided I was ready to make my first feature film, I took a tally of all the resources I had, and I went from there.  I knew I wanted to make a movie that was a fun – but hopefully still thoughtful -- ride.

What kind of research did you do before scripting, if any?

I watched every sci-fi action movie I could get my hands on! I watched all my favorites. And I also watched a lot of terrible movies. And the whole time I was learning lessons.

Besides having a solid story, every successful action movie needs to care about character. It’s not just enough to have action sequences. If you can construct those sequences around a character the audience cares about, then you have a shot at making a successful film.

I realized that the only way to make this movie stand out, was to build it around relatable character.
I wanted to the audience to care about Bridd and follow him to the end of the world.

Were you a fan of these sci-fi conspiracy flicks growing up?

Absolutely. I’ve always loved the films of Alfred Hitchcock. I’ve always loved the Twilight Zone and the X-Files. I love exploiting the feeling that no one really knows who -- or what -- is out there.

How many actors did you see for the lead roles?

I saw dozens of actors but the moment I saw Austin I knew I had my lead. He had tremendous heart. In him I saw an everyman capable of taking us on this journey.  Someone we could love and relate to.

How was Alexis to work with?

Alexis was a treat! She was so willing to explore her character. She always brought life to the character of Charlotte. She was so upbeat and willing to go wherever the character needed to go.

Is there a sequel in the future?

Who knows? There’s definitely the potential for it. It all depends on whether the wonderful audience members of the world love the movie enough!

Interview with Gabriel Campisi - Producer of Death Pool

Gabriel Campisi is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker who shot his first movies on Super-8mm and 16mm as a kid, the more elaborate ones going on to win national competitions. Proficient in creating practical and optical special effects at a time when computer-generated imagery was not yet prominent, he was recognized early on by national film festivals and magazines for his stop-motion animation and split-beam cinematic techniques.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Campisi spent many years dealing in the high-stakes world of motion picture finance, subsequently writing the bestselling The Independent Filmmaker's Guide to Writing a Business Plan for Investors (McFarland Publishers) presently in its second edition.

Campisi studied with UCLA's screenwriting professor Richard Walter, and has written for industry publications and genre magazines, including Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Fangoria Magazine. He is a partner at Traplight Pictures and a member of the Producers Guild of America (P.G.A.).

Gabriel joins us today to talk about Death Pool

This is yet another collaboration between yourself and Jared Cohn.  How far does that working relationship date back?

I’ve known Jared for several years now, and we’ve worked on many projects together.  I think the fact we work so well together is that it’s a true partnership with mutual respect.  We both bring different assets to the table which complement each other, and recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
While we own Traplight Pictures, LLC with our other partner Demtreus Stear, we also do our own projects independent of one another.  There is no set rule on how we collaborate, but we definitely have the same interests and will be producing movies together well into the future.

And how do you think this project differed from previous films you’ve done together?

While we’ve worked together on other projects in the past, and some in collaboration with our company, Traplight Pictures, this was the first project that was 100% completely financed and produced by our company.  We had no one to answer to but ourselves.

This brought a double-edged sword to the equation.  While on the one hand we had complete autonomy to produce the film as we desired, we also were aware we had no safety net – no studio or executive to turn to if we went over budget, and no one to blame but ourselves if the movie fails.

Would you say this is almost ‘swimming’ in a different genre to the other movies?  It’s part horror film, part art film, almost.

I think the movie still stays within the same body of work we’ve been doing until now, but definitely the movie has a twist.  I can’t think of a movie where the killer used water as his primary tool for killing his victims before.

Who knows, maybe we’re inventing a new genre.

Randy Wayne is someone new to the Traplight Media family, I believe?  How did he come to play the role?

Jared directed him in the movie Hold Your Breath (2012), so they were friends from before.  When it came time to cast Johnny Taylor, his name was one of the first to come up as a possible actor to portray him.  We needed someone who could play a normal person on the outside, but with deep trauma on the inside that he tries to hide, but eventually surfaces.

Randy liked the screenplay, and loved the part right away.  He brought some great insight to how he would play the role, and he seriously brought the character to life.  He did an incredible job.

Did he find some of those ‘drowning’ scenes difficult to film?

You’d have to ask him that question, but I don’t think he did.  I think he had a lot of fun, actually.  Randy was a trooper from the start.  He’s a great guy and he brought 110% to the production.  He was never afraid to try things, no matter how crazy or bizarre.  He was also always very careful to not really hurt anyone, and considerate of the other actors.

Was everyone a little freaked out by him on the set – especially those damsels in distress?

No, not at all.  Randy’s a very kind and funny person, and everyone actually had a lot of fun on set at all times – even during the death scenes.

The film’s title changed -- why was that?

We originally called the movie The Valley Drowner, which was the name the media gives Randy’s character in the movie. When we signed the movie with Artist View Entertainment, they discovered the title did not translate correctly in foreign languages, and it could potentially be a problem with foreign sales.  In fact, the word “drowner” is not a real word, as I found out after my own research.  It’s only listed in fringe dictionaries, but it’s not in any of the respectable ones – Oxford, Cambridge, Merriam-Webster, etc.
So we had to toss around different title ideas, and Death Pool is the one we eventually went with.

How much say do producers and filmmakers get in a film once it’s been sold to a distributor? Do you have to just let it go and wish it luck?

A movie is typically not sold to distributors -- it’s licensed.  Once you let it go, it will play out on its own as per the deal you have with that sales agent or distributor.  This is why it is so crucial to make sure you have a good deal in place.

I know too many filmmakers who are so eager to get a “deal,” they will sign the first deal to come along, or they won’t really consider the distributor’s strengths and weaknesses.  Then when things go wrong, they can’t figure out why.

There are many variables that can make the difference between a good deal and a bad deal.  Making sure those variables are present, and knowing how to gauge them is crucial.  That part is my responsibility as executive producer.

Interview with Tracey Birdsall The star of Rogue Warrior : Robot Fighter

Tracey Birdsall has done it all, but it’s an independent science-fiction film that she’s really making her mark in. The star of Rogue Warrior : Robot Fighter tells us what interested her about making the transition into science-fiction, how she prepared herself to play a kick-ass action hero, and the appeal of working with British filmmaker Neil Johnson.

Is there any interesting story about how you got involved in Rogue Warrior: Robot Fighter?

Actually meeting with Director Neil Johnson was an interesting time in my life. It was a moment in time, so much like thousands of others – you meet a director and sit down and discuss your careers. You speak of what’s important to you, what your approach and direction is, and you see if it’s a good fit – much like dating. The difference with Neil was that we were both so impressed by our love of our craft, our painstaking stop-at-nothing approach. The rest is history. The best… yet to come.

Has being in an action sci-fi movie been a goal of yours?

I’m not brave enough to make specific goals within a certain genre; moreover, I make career goals and strive to always make each project better than the last. I research the character both on the page and in my mind to see what I can make of it – if there’s any brilliance I can bring to it. That said, I’m kind of an action chick in real life. I like pushing myself physically to the extremes. It kind of makes sense for me to do sci-fi (my favorite genre) and action (my physical way and my other favorite genre). It was never planned that way, but I see how I got here. It all started with my tomboy nature… In many ways, doing Rogue Warrior demonstrated that my “child self” was okay – that growing up being a tomboy – can pay off. That was huge for me as the youngest of three sisters (and the only tomboy.)

How did you transform yourself, mentally and physically, to play the role of Sienna?

I put on about 10-15 pounds of muscle to play Sienna. I trained even harder, ate even more, strategically balanced my protein intake and physical output to get into optimal shape for the role. It was kind of tricky, as Sienna’s journey has a past that involves her more physical nature – so I had to take that into consideration when preparing her physically. She had to be not just capable of the action, but also very womanly – as the reveal would expose – I had to take everything that she was and everything that she would become – into consideration. Mentally? I had to just “let go.” Mentally Sienna was a bit of a mess. She didn’t realize her own reality as she had memory loss from an accident – which later exposes itself to be purposeful misinformation.

Though an entertaining movie, would you suggest there’s also a ‘message’ to the film?

It’s a film of persistence, defiance, strength and overcoming one’s own limits. It’s a film of female empowerment, lack of sexual identity and understanding, realization of one’s self, and acceptance of one’s vulnerabilities whether due to family, self-identity, or situational. There’s a message of persistence, undeniable self-worth, and the constant questioning of what would happen if? …Very much like real life.

What interested Neil Johnson in telling this story?

Neil has quite a curious mind! He delves deep into science and science fiction – oftentimes looking past what the viewer knowingly realizes he is viewing. He tells stories meant to be re-watched and appreciated at whole new levels. Rogue Warrior was a story that was morphed from a previous script he wrote – morphed to fit the current needs of society and the market… and also that of its characters.

What kind of research did you both do into A.I, if any?

I grew up with a realization of Artificial Intelligence as my father worked both as the President of PowerCon (the largest Power Electronics Convention in the world at the time) and in consulting arenas involving the chips for the Stealth Bomber (amongst other things). Robotics was a part of my world long before computing was a “thing” for the public at large. My fascination with Artificial Intelligence (between this and being a sci-fi geek) made it where it was only natural for me to be not only interested in – but fascinated in – A.I. It was already an extreme awareness.

Are you going to stick to this genre? Or try something completely different next?

I was the lead in two comedies and two sci-fi films this year. I’m going to stick to doing amazing films with character-driven arcs - within all genres. Although sci-fi is my favourite, it’s important to work across the realms and genres in order to continue to stay relevant and grow within oneself. I’m a serious actor. I can’t get pigeonholed. I see relief in genre switching.

Battle of the Sexes | Official HD Trailer | 2017

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s World #1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

Interview with Joe McClean - Writer/Director of The Drama Club

Joe McClean is an American screenwriter, director and producer under his company Ginger Beard.
McClean has written, directed, and produced two indie features, as well as short films and web-series.
He is best known for: The Drama Club (2017), Life Tracker (2013) and How to Make a David Lynch Film (2010).

Joe tells us how he found time (he manages an apartment building!) to make a movie.

Is there any interesting story about how you got involved in The Drama Club?

My boss at my day job (managing an apartment building) owns the lake property we shot the movie on. He’s been kind enough for the last 7 years or so to let me and a bunch of my friends (Dane Bowman who plays Aaron, Jon Thomas who plays Cory, Chris Ciccarelli who plays Luke, and Barry Finnegan who plays Nathan all included) go up there to play for a weekend.

Is it a personal movie?

Very much so. I am each and every one of the characters in some way shape or form.

What interested you in telling this particular story?

I’m the walking stereotype of a mid life crisis. I needed to tell this story to stop myself from divorcing my incredible wife and taking out a load to by a hotrod with no back seat for my kid. We all go through it! We all wish for life could “be like it was,” or feel like a drastic change will be the needed bandaid to make us feel like our lives mean something. The one constant I’ve come to for the worth in my life is friendship. Friends everything to me.

What kind of research did you do before scripting, if any?

Honestly not much of anything. This was a story about relationships and human emotions. There was nothing historical or technical about it. I did cursory things like looking into a couple cases of bankers going to jail, but the rest was just emotional analysis.

Were you a fan of these ‘old friends’ reunited movies?

Yep. I’m certainly a fan. Don’t get me wrong, the other motive to make an “old friends reunite” movie was because I’m an indie filmmaker with very little access to funding. This kind of story is cheaper to tell. I wrote this knowing that I wanted to make a movie, not simply write a script.

How many actors did you see for the lead roles?

None. I knew them all personally. There was no auditioning.

Are you going to stick to this genre? Or try something completely different next?

I’m definitely a character driven storyteller, but they won’t all be talky melodramas. My movie before The Drama Club was a Sci-Fi movie called Life Tracker, and I’m currently dusting off an old thriller to see if I want to rewrite it and shoot it next.

SHREK
DONKEY! The first film in the series is an absolute treat and forms an all-time family favourite that can be enjoyed time and time again. The voice cast is fantastic and everyone with kids can relate to the relationship between Shrek and Donkey! It’s full of adult jokes, mainly based around Lord Farquaad (remove the r, ahem!) and the soundtrack is also brilliant… It ticks all the boxes for us!

WRECK-IT RALPH
The brilliant Wreck-it Ralph is one for the geeky Dad’s who spent their childhood in games arcades or playing 8-bit video games. The film features several cameos from real-world video game characters including Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man and Boswer from The Mario franchise, and it also references other popular games such as Donkey Kong, Halo and Call of Duty. But the best part, most of the film is basically set in world made out of sweets!

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS

The LEGO® Batman Movie’s Greatest Villains

Gotham City is renowned for being the most crime-ridden city in the whole (DC) universe! From cat-burglars to mutated clay men, Gotham’s underbelly has a whole host of interesting characters to offer, with many of them making their LEGO-fied appearance in The LEGO® Batman Movie – which comes to DVD and Blu-ray™ June 19!

The Joker
As the leader of Gotham City’s underworld and archenemy of Batman, The Joker has proved his worth at the top of the list. He’s a master criminal and the self-proclaimed ‘Clown Prince of Crime’, not to mention a resident trickster with crazy green hair and face paint. In The LEGO® Batman Movie, The Joker wants to free the universes greatest villains from The Phantom Zone – is this his most dastardly plot ever?

The Riddler
Riddle me this, riddle me that, look out Gotham, The Riddler is back! This puzzling chap just can’t seem to get a sentence out of his mouth without rhyming and spouting riddles, but don’t let that fool you… this green-clad villain is smarter than half of Gotham’s population combined! You can’t miss him in The LEGO® Batman Movie as he comes crashing down with a giant question mark – see if you spot him!

Harley Quinn
Harley wasn’t always so manic, before she turned to villainy, Dr Harleen Quinzel was a respected psychaiatrist at the infamous Arkham Asylum, where she treated one particularly clown-like patient… Her love for The Joker and her crazy nature (along with a giant hammer) make Harley Quinn a wild card for sure! She’s also essential to The Joker’s latest plan, using her disguise as Dr. Quinzel to steal the Phantom Zone gun and free an army of evil goons from the Phantom Zone.

Poison Ivy
Gotham City’s botanist turned toxic temptress, Poison Ivy is a force of nature, manipulating plants and toxins at will to ensnare even Batman! Her eco-powers have allowed her to rise to the very top of Gotham’s villainous hierarchy. She’s also irresistible to pretty much anyone – it’s the pheromones she controls rather than the flowing red hair that pulls you in. You can catch Poison Ivy trying (and failing) to give LEGO Batman a smooch!

Bane
What started as one of the strongest and most dastardly villains of the DC Universe quickly became the oddly, adorably goofy LEGO Bane we see in The LEGO® Batman Movie. If this giant goofball doesn’t make you laugh when he becomes Batman’s punching bag, or when he’s the politest villain ever – then there’s a problem with your sense of humour! Hey this guy even helps Batman!

Competition: Win Puppet On A Chain Official Soundtrack Audio CD

Puppet On A Chain Official Soundtrack Audio CD  is out on 16th June and to celebrate we have a great competition for you and 3 copies of the CD to give away.

Synopsis:
A masterpiece of suspense and no-holds barred action, Puppet on a Chain was adapted from Alistair Maclean's 1969 novel and released in 1971. Directed by Geoffrey Reeve and starring a granite-jawed Sven-Bertil Taube, the film's signature boat chase (lasting eight minutes!) along the canals of Amsterdam was rumoured to be the inspiration for the similar sequence in Bond's Live and Let Die.

The action is underpinned by Italian soundtrack maestro Piero Piccioni's blistering Hammond-heavy score. Piccioni composed around 300 soundtracks over four decades, but was most prolific during the '60's and '70's, when he was sought out by directors including Francesco Rosi, Mario Monicelli, Alberto Lattuada, Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica and Lina Wertmuller. A talented self-taught jazz musician, Piccioni's soundtrack to Puppet on a Chain retains effortless style, portraying a decadent 1970's Amsterdam overrun with drugs and organised crime.
