Looking back at the career of Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy has become one of Ireland’s greatest acting talents, after working his up through the independent cinema and stage scenes to starring in Hollywood blockbusters, pitting himself firmly among Hollywood’s elite, earning himself both respect and fame. His latest release see’s him star as one of two Czechoslovakian agents to attempt to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and third in command of the Nazi forces behind Hitler and Himmler.
With Anthropoid out on DVD & Blu-ray on now, it seems like the perfect time to take a look at the some of his best roles (and accents) to date!

Batman Begins; The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (2005, 2008, 2012)
In this triple whammy of the ultimate superhero films, Cillian Murphy shines as psychotic villain Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow. Having suffered a traumatic childhood, Scarecrow makes it his mission to expose people to their worst fears using his homemade recipe; Fear Toxin. The trouble for Scarecrow when he’s first introduced in Batman Begins, is there’s a new guy in town who has a craving for taking down Gotham’s most villainous. Murphy’s Scarecrow was the first true villain of the series, and was brought back for the final two instalments in one way or another, continually proving to be an irritable thorn in the Caped Crusaders side.

Inception (2010)
After his disturbing portrayal of Scarecrow in Batman Begins, Cillian became somewhat of a regular for visionary director Christopher Nolan, who wanted him back for his move into Sci-Fi for his reality bending, head-spin of a film; Inception. Jamie plays Robert Fischer, a man who is in line to take over the extremely profitable family business, as his father lays on his death bed from illness. A group of dream-hackers lead by none other than Leonardo Dicaprio are hired to kidnap Cillian, and go deep inside his dreams to plant the idea of him deciding to turn down the family business in pursuit of his own path, leaving it open for their employer and business rival to disrupt. Murphy may play somewhat of a villain in the film, but he still manages to add great depth to his character, especially during the film’s emotional climax, as the walls of his dreams come crashing down.

28 Days Later (2002)
Danny Boyle transformed the hustle and bustle of central London into an epic wasteland for his revolutionary zombie horror film 28 Days Later, in which our protagonist Jim (played by Cillian) awakens into after a coma. Turns out, whilst he was asleep the world had broken into panic over a virus spreading rapidly, infecting anyone that comes in its path into crazy, flesh-craving zombies. Luckily, Jim manages to meet up with a rag-tag bunch of survivors and find safety with a group of soldiers in Manchester who claim to have the "answer" to infection. Mr Murphy might not be at the top of everyone’s list for who they’d want by their side in a zombie apocalypse, but after seeing this we’d have him any day!

Red Eye (2005)
Cillian isn’t short of having some impressive directors to call on if he’s in need of work, which included the late, legendary horror director Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream). He recruited Murphy him for Red Eye - which sits just outside his comfort zone as a more mainstream thriller - following Lisa (Rachel McAdams), who is kidnapped by a him on a routine flight home. Threatened by the potential murder of her father, she is pulled into a plot to assist her captor in killing a politician. The film is at its most gripping and tense when our man is showing his truly sinister side, reading Lisa’s various escape attempts at every turn. One tip: if you see Mr. Murphy in line to board your holiday flight... run!

Breakfast on Pluto (2005)
Never one to back away from a challenging role, Cillian digs his teeth into the part of Patrick ‘Kitten’ Braden, a transvestite who flees Ireland during the politically tumultuous 1970s on a quest to find love and a place to call home. She eventually makes it to London where she becomes a prostitute and somehow get’s involved in an IRA bombing campaign. Cillian managed to pick up a Golden Globes nomination his powerful portrayal, whilst also raising awareness for an issue which is still very misunderstood to this day.

Peaky Blinders (2013)
Cillian shows off his ability to immerse himself in roles (and nailing tricky accents) with the part of Thomas Shelby, the Brummy-based, 1920s gangster from Peaky Blinders. With the series becoming such a huge hit, it’s now hard to think of the actor without him wearing a flat cat and laying into some yobs with his fists! As the series goes on you start to understand Tommy and his family much more, which is helped by Cillian’s expert ability to add depth to troubled and often hateful characters, as he does so brilliantly here. With season three just around the corner, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Tommy next!

Anthropoid (2016)
Starring opposite another Irish heart throb in Jamie Dornan (50 Shade of Grey, The Fall), the duo attempt to get close enough to Nazi SS Officer Reinhard Heydrich in order to assainate him, and disrupt his plans to begin his ‘final solution’ in the Prague. Murphy does a fantastic job of paying tribute to the original true story here, with an extremely detailed performance, whilst also bringing and air of gripping intensity to the WII drama. Not to mention his attempt at a Czech accent is absolutely faultless, and one he can add to an impressive list (see above). With the pressure mounting on the two spies, they know they have to get close enough to make an attempt on Heydrich’s life, or follow orders to end their own should they be captured...

Jamie Dornan Retrospective

Based on an extraordinary true story, ANTHROPOID follows the daring plot by two Czechoslovakian agents to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and third in command of the Nazi forces behind Hitler and Himmler. One half of the brave duo is portrayed by Jamie Dornan, former male model and international lust object who is somewhat improbably also earning a reputation as one of the most intense leading men around thanks to an acting career rooted in leftfield choices and powerful performances.

With ANTHROPOID available now on digital, Blu-ray and DVD from January 16th, what better time to look back at the career of the Belfast-born beauty?

Marie Antoinette (2006)
Until writer/director Sofia Coppola’s pop art look at France’s doomed queen came along, Dornan was best known for a modelling career that took in gigs for Abercrombie & Fitch, Aquascutum, Hugo Boss and Armani, even winning the label ‘The Golden Torso’ from The New York Times, for reasons obvious to anyone blessed with the power of sight. His turn as Count Axel Von Fersen The Younger, confidante and friend to Kirsten Dunst’s titular queen, soon had people looking at more than Dornan’s torso, however, and a burgeoning acting career was born.

Once Upon A Time (2011 – present)
American network ABC has hit the big time with its ongoing series that sees fairy tale characters trapped in small town New England and Dornan further cut his teeth in the show’s first year, playing the town’s Sheriff and former Huntsman (of Snow White And The Huntsman fame). His time on the show mostly saw him cast as the Evil Queen’s plaything before being killed off at her hand. Magic is as magic does, however, and Dornan didn’t let a little thing like being dead get in the way of a triumphant return to the show for one of the 4 season finale episodes.

The Fall (2013 – 2016)
There probably aren’t many international male models prepared to play quite so far away from type as Dornan has proved happy to do over three seasons of the truly brilliant The Fall. Starring as Paul Spector, a sadistic serial killer with a penchant for predatory, brutal murder sprees, Dornan brings new meaning to the word ‘brooding’ and caused conflict for viewers up and down the country who were at once drawn to and repulsed by a monster who was nevertheless still really sexy. Dornan’s interplay with Gillian Anderson’s police chief Stella Gibson became the stuff of legend, although a fourth season seems unlikely given how events played out at the end of season three.

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
There’s little that hasn’t been said about EL James’ series of bonkbusters. Having started out as a bit of light Twilight fan fiction, the story morphed into a world-beating collection of books credited with bringing the concept of a little light bondage to the drawn curtains of suburbias across the globe. When Dornan was announced as the whips and chains obsessed Christian Grey the world went mad, even more so than it had done when the previous frontrunner for the roll, Charlie Hunnam, was announced. Sure, considered opinion is that ‘it isn’t as bad as it should have been’ and that’s hardly the best starting point, but Dornan’s star remains undimmed and early word on the second film on in the planned trilogy is, dare we say it, surprisingly good.

The 9th Life Of Louis Drax (2016)
Another leftfield choice for Dornan (no-one would ever accuse him of taking the easy road to Hollywood stardom, to his credit), The 9th Life Of Louis Drax sees him playing a psychologist who is drawn into the life and mind of a young boy left almost dead after a fall. As the mystery surrounding the boy’s situation deepens, the boundaries between reality and fantasy start to blur for all concerned and Dornan shines in another complex performance that shows he has many more strings to his bow than simply being a (really) pretty face.

Anthropoid (2016)
Starring opposite Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Batman Begins), Dornan delivers perhaps one of his most accessible performances yet in Anthropoid, producing a performance rooted in real life and true heroism as one of two agents who aim to bring about the assassination of the man responsible for the plan to commit genocide against millions of Jews. Alongside the uniformly excellent Murphy, Dornan shines in a thriller that truly delivers both as a top flight movie and as an example of just how far Dornan has come in a career that refuses to be predicted.

Synopsis:
John Waters’ gloriously grotesque, unavailable-for-decades second feature comes to cinemas at long last, replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous moments. Made on a shoestring budget in Baltimore, with Waters taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, who’s out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair.
