The Rise of Jennifer Lawrence

As popular off camera as she is on, Jennifer Lawrence is a rare kind of celebrity who's both idolised and relatable. Whilst the 27-year-old's films have grossed over $5.5 billion worldwide and she's got a mantelpiece brimming with awards, she's just as much loved for her cool wit and goofy charm. She deserves a Lifetime Achievement award for her epic Oscars tumble alone.

So, as you sit back and fantasise about her being your bestie, here's a reminder of how she got to where she is today…

Hunger Games
Although she'd already earned an Oscar nomination for her role in 2010's Winter's Bone, Jennifer Lawrence shot into the public eye quicker than one of Katniss' arrows when she took on the central role in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games book trilogy. And just like the heroic archer, she won the nation's heart.

Silver Linings Playbook
Sorry, Bradley Cooper, but Jennifer stole the show as quirky dance enthusiast Tiffany Maxwell in 2012's romantic comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook - and she snagged an Oscar to prove it. No wonder director David O.Russell has since pulled her in for with her two more collaborations. As far as dance sequences go, this film offers the best.

American Hustle
Jennifer's supporting role in her second project with David O. Russell earned her a BAFTA win and cemented her position as one of the finest comedians of her generation. As Roselyn, the unstable but endearing wife of Christian Bale's con artist, she singlehandedly ensured that we can no longer reheat a ready-meal in the microwave without shouting 'science oven!'

Passengers
The dilemma faced by Chris Pratt's Jim Preston strikes a chord with us all… If you were woken 90 years early while travelling through space and had to decide between spending the rest of your days alone or in the company of Jennifer Lawrence, what would choose? It's a no brainer. Okay, so it's not as straightforward as that but we can't think of a better actor than Jennifer to portray Aurora.

X-Men
Jennifer might not be recognisable when she's covered in blue body paint for her role of shapeshifting Mystique in the X-Men franchise, but there's no doubt that she's awesome. She first appeared in the superhero series in 2011's X-Men: First class. X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse followed, with X-Men: Dark Phoenix lined-up for later this year. We can't wait.

mother!
What better way for Jennifer to showcase her incredible range and versatility than with her role in Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror? If you thought she went to some dark places as Katniss in Hunger Games, you haven't seen anything yet… In mother!, she stars alongside Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer in a story about a young woman whose peaceful life disrupted by the arrival of some uninvited guests. After pushing herself to her very limits and leaving us at the very edge of our seats, there's no doubt that Ms Lawrence is a true acting legend.

She envisions the world in her own vivid imagination with help from James' descriptions. While the two enjoy a colourful existence living in Bangkok, their relationship is upended when Gina receives a corneal transplant and regains her sight. With her restored vision, Gina experiences the world with a new sense of wonder and independence which James finds threatening. It is only when Gina suddenly begins to lose her sight again that she finally realises the disturbing reality of their marriage...

Tomb Raider - New Trailer & Poster

Brawler. Hunter. Survivor. Lara Croft is back. Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander stars in this fresh adaptation of the action-adventure. Join one of the world's most formidable heroes as she journeys into the unknown to solve her father's mysterious death, while fighting to find her place in the world - could this be the making of her?

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.  Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Leaving everything she knows behind, Lara goes in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Exclusive Interview with Writer/Director Tyler Amm – “Butcher the Bakers”

Writer/director Tyler Amm’s frighteningly funny Butcher the Bakers arrives on VOD January 16 from genre specialists Dark Cuts.

Recently fired, a grim reaper terrorizes a small town, killing and collecting souls for a purpose only he knows. Sam and Martin, slackers who work at the local bakery, are hired by a mysterious stranger to stop him from killing again. Ryan Matthew Ziegler, Sean Walsh, Mike Behrens and Lisa Wojcik star.

Executive produced by Volumes of Blood’s P.J Starks, Butcher the Bakers is a fantastically splatastic new indie jaunt that gives both the lungs and funnybone a workout!

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil meets Zombieland in Butcher the Bakers, out January 16 on Vudu, iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft Xbox, Vubiquity, Dish and Tivo.

Beautiful looking film – what do you film it on?

It was shot on the Panasonic Lumix GH4 with Veydra lenses.
Was it important to you that the film have as much substance as it did style?
We definitely wanted it to feel stylistic in that it’s weird, odd, and makes you question what you saw. As far as the substance, it definitely achieves the previous goal. There’s a lot going on and plenty of questionable things you’ll see on screen.

One can only imagine that some of today’s newspaper headlines might have played muse to the script?

Honestly not sure where you’re getting this from as the film is about a Grim Reaper that goes around killing people and taking their souls. There is a lot of death in the news, so I guess it’s certainly possible that it was the result of a rogue grim reaper. What a bastard.

Genre movies don’t have to be silly – was it important to you that yours have some intelligence about it?

No. Did we use our intelligence to make the film? Absolutely. Do any of the characters act intelligent? Absolutely not. It’s fun and probably dumb.

Striking soundtrack. How important is sound to you? Who composed it?

Billy Niebuhr of Nashville TN as scored all of my films. He is a fantastic talent and can work with just about any genre and tone. He is a wizard of music making.

How much of the film comes together in the editing room? I imagine that’s when a lot of the scares start to work?

It is billed as a horror comedy only in so much as it has horror themes and elements in it. There are no true scares in the film. Was my editing horrifying? I’ll leave that up to the reviewers!

VOD seems to be the main spot we’ll find the film. Are you a VOD user yourself?

Do you prefer audiences see it this way- at their own time, in their own space?
If I can’t see something in a theatre then I prefer to stream it. There are a few platforms I utilize so it will be fun to see my own film on them. I don’t know of the best platform for people to watch Butcher the Bakers on, but I do prefer they watch it with friends. Laugh with the movie, at the movie, I don’t care. Just have a good time with it.

Do you believe VOD is the way of the future?

Theatrical screenings will always have a place in society as way to event screen something. I think that’s important. But VOD is undeniably simple and convenient and will continue to grow.

Do you recommend we eat or drink anything in particular while watching the film at home? What do you recommend?

I myself am partial to the King’s Feast. That’s where you and your buddies bring every single thing you craved that day and just gorge yourself on all your pleasure foods. Bring toilet paper as well.

Teen Titans GO! to the Movies - Official Teaser Trailer and Artwork

Synopsis
When the Teen Titans go to the big screen, they go big!  “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in their first feature film extravaganza—a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers.

It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies—everyone but the Teen Titans, that is!  But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick.  If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them.  With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream.  But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry.  The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

Will Arnett (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”) and Kristen Bell (“Frozen”) lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network’s animated TV show, which also stars Greg Cipes (TV’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s “Spider-Man”) as Robin, Khary Payton (“The Walking Dead”) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the “My Little Pony” franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake”) as Starfire, reprising their roles from the series.

The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic and Horvath, based on characters from DC.  Michail, Will Arnett and Peggy Regan are producing, with Sam Register, Jelenic and Horvath serving as executive producers.  Apart from Arnett, all are “Teen Titans GO!” series contributors.

TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES is released August 3, 2018.

As the trial unfolds an extremist concocts a plot to stop the heresy against the church. Tommy’s faith and convictions are tested, and as he’s challenged to question his purpose, he begins the transformation from a sexist, arrogant person to one who is committed to a mission larger than his own self-interests.

Sulphur for Leviathan - Poster and Trailer

Sulphur for Leviathan is an upcoming arthouse horror short and marks one of Sodom & Chimera Productions’ most radical and controversial films so far. The film is very conceptual, and was shot on Super 8 and 16mm, also making use of the dead format that is 9,5mm.

The story of Sulphur for Leviathan revolves around a nun, who suddenly finds herself progressively fantasizing about things that shouldn’t be in her head, increasingly having to face her own doings of blasphemy, all leading up to something demonically dark and sinister. Portrayed in a surreal manner both in color and black and white, with a heavy focus on elegant cinematography, the film tells a satanic tale of unfulfilled desires, lust, blasphemy and existential dread, packed in a controversial and disturbing, but calm and poetic experience that is heavily inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky, with a touch of satanism.

Written & directed by James Quinn.

Starring Susan M. Martin (Plank Face), Jerry Larew (She Was So Pretty 1 & 2) and Craig Long in the lead roles.

The Greatest Train Thrillers

Trains have always been a great setting for movies; the excitement of the journey, the thrill of the speed, the mystery of the strangers filling a carriage. All these elements and more are why filmmakers choose to use the mode of transport as a great setting for their story to play out.

To celebrate the release of upcoming thriller THE COMMUTER, starring Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Sam Neill, in cinemas January 19, we collated a list of the greatest train thrillers ever to hit the big screen.

Murder On The Orient Express (1974)
Infamous detective Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) is tasked with solving the murder of a passenger on the luxurious Orient Express whilst travelling back to London. With twelve suspects in the carriage, all seemingly unconnected to the victim, the sleuth must interrogate and consider every possibility to solve one of his most challenging and enthralling cases.

Unstoppable (2010)
When train conductor Will (Chris Pine) is partnered with veteran engineer Frank (Denzel Washington), the pair clash over old and new ideals of the job. However when a company exec informs them that a train nearby carrying toxic chemicals is running unmanned, they must join together to stop it before it crashes in a populated area, endangering thousands of lives.

The Taking Of Pelham 123 (1974)
New York is brought to a standstill when four men take passengers on a subway carriage hostage. Demanding $1 million from the mayor, the group state that they will kill a passenger every minute that the money is late. Wisecracking transit policeman Zach Garber (Walter Matthau) unwittingly becomes the communicator between the hijackers & the authorities and must try to stop the situation before anyone is killed, but a question keeps nagging at everyone involved – if the ransom is paid, how can the men possibly escape the subway tunnel?

Source Code (2011)
A soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds out that he is part of an experimental government programme when he wakes up in someone else’s body on a train heading into Chicago, only 8 minutes later a bomb goes off killing everyone on board. He discovers that his mission is to work out the identity of the bombers, as the same 8 minutes are reset over and over again. As he attempts to solve the mystery, he begins to wonder why he was selected for the task and whether he can make a difference to the fate of the passengers.

Strangers On A Train (1951)
When two men meet by chance travelling to New York, they discuss their problems and come up with the perfect murder – that the strangers each kill off the other’s ‘problem’ so there are no ties to the murders. However whilst one of the men believes that this was a discussion in jest, the other goes ahead with the plan and begins pressuring his partner in crime to complete his side of the bargain too.

The Commuter (2018)
A woman (Vera Farmiga) sits down one day next to Michael (Liam Neeson), an ordinary commuter on his way home as usual, and gives him a seemingly simple task – find someone on board that doesn’t belong. The offer of money to complete this task is alluring and he agrees, but Michael soon discovers that he is now at the central of a criminal conspiracy where lives are on the line.

THE COMMUTER COMES TO CINEMAS JANUARY 19

Dance Baby Dance - Trailer and Poster

His Dream Was to Tap.

This January experience the joy and spectacle as writer-director Stephen Kogon dances towards his dream.

Beverley Mitchell (“Seventh Heaven”), Jim O’Heir (“Parks and Recreation”), Carlos Alazraqui (Despicable Me 3) and Stephen Kogon star in the first feel-good film of 2018, DANCE BABY DANCE, in theaters and available on Amazon from 1/19 via Indie Rights.

Have you ever had a dream? JIMMY PERCER did. His was to be a professional tap dancer. And in his early 20s, he was on his way … until a horrible knee injury stopped him in his tracks. He rehabbed like crazy to get back to where he had a chance again … only to re-injure the knee. The dream never died, but life happened. He met a pretty girl (TESS), they got married, he got a job and the years went by.

Now in his mid-30s, and still happily married, he sees one last chance to still go for his dream. A showcase for a touring dance show is coming to his town. To be chosen in this showcase means being a part of the touring show for a whole year. He’ll have to compete against younger and better dancers to be chosen. And to make it even harder, his surgically repaired knee never recovered 100%, making it difficult to do moves that once came so easily. But no one wants it more, and no one will work harder.

As that’s going on, Tess’ sister LANIE and her 9-year-old daughter KIT come live with them. Kit is upset about her mom and dad splitting up, and won’t talk to anyone. However, she loves to dance, and sneaks off one day to watch Jimmy practice. They end up doing a little tap dance routine together and as they bond, she starts coming out of her shell, and in turn she starts gaining self-esteem.

As the day of the showcase nears, the obstacles keep mounting for Jimmy. His knee starts feeling sore, a new amazing tap dancer enters the competition, and Tess and Jimmy’s financial situation worsens. Due to all this, Jimmy’s confidence starts to fade – until Kit returns the favor and helps get Jimmy back on track.

When the big day of the showcase arrives, it becomes all that much clearer how brilliant the competition is. Even those who believe in Jimmy the most, know the odds are great.

And now it’s his turn to dance. Will he be able to rise above all the competition, and his own shortcomings, to dance the performance of his life? If so, then his lifelong dream will be realized.

DANCE BABY DANCE premieres at the Arena Cinelounge, Hollywood on January 19  - followed by a week long run - as well as releases on digital at Amazon.

BOMBSHELL: The Hedy Lamarr Story will open in cinemas nationwide on 9 March 2018

Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (Ziegfeld Girl, Samson and Delilah) was known as ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’ with Snow White and Catwoman both based on her iconic look. She was as famous for her performances as she was infamous for her multiple marriages and affairs with the likes of Spencer Tracy and JFK. But there was another, much more interesting, side to Hedy Lamarr.

BOMBSHELL: THE STORY OF HEDY LAMARR discovers the real woman, not only as an actress but giving her the credit she deserves as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionise modern communication. It was only towards the end of her life that tech pioneers discovered her concept of frequency hopping, which is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.

In 2016, director Alexandra Dean and producer Adam Haggiag unearthed four never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life. The film finally gives Hedy Lamarr the chance to tell her own story in her own words. The documentary is also narrated by Hedy’s family, closest friends and admirers including Diane Kruger, Mel Brooks and Robert Osborne. The film was produced by Academy Award® winning Susan Sarandon as well as Michael Kantor and Regina Scully.
