Crucible of the Vampire - in UK cinemas on 1 February 2019

Making its World Premiere at Cannes Film Festival and garnering rave reviews at other major festivals, Iain Ross-McNamee’s gothic chiller Crucible of the Vampire is set to arrives in UK cinemas on 1 February 2019, followed by its home entertainment release on 4 February 2019 in dual format DVD and Blu-ray and on digital platforms courtesy of Screenbound Entertainment.

Starring British acting favourite Neil Morrissey (Line of Duty, Men Behaving Badly), alongside rising stars Katie Goldfinch and Florence Cady, this brooding vampire tale gives a strong nod to classic British horror greats and the genre defining Hammer Horror films.

A young museum curator Isabelle (Katie Goldfinch) is sent to look at an ancient artefact, discovered in the basement of a stately home in Shropshire.  Welcomed into the sprawling manor house by a seemingly hospitable family; Karl (Larry Rew), his wife Evelyn (Babette Barat) and their beautiful daughter Scarlet (Florence Cady), but all is not what it seems, as a dark and terrifying secret hangs over them.

When Isabelle discovers the truth within the mansion’s foreboding walls, can she escape the clutches of its malevolent occupants?

This immortal tale, which moves from the English Civil War to the present day, is smart, stylish, sexy and as sharp as vampire’s teeth.

Once Upon A Deadpool - Trailer

Once Upon a Deadpool is a remixed version of Deadpool 2, told by Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth to actor Fred Savage. Consider this a PG-13 version of Reynolds’ superhero franchise, which is most notable for earning an R rating. Savage’s inclusion in the movie is described by 20th Century Fox as “an homage to Savage’s starring role in the 1987 bedtime-story classic The Princess Bride.”

“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” Reynolds told Deadline. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining.”

ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL releases nationwide on DECEMBER 11 - for one night only

Best Vigilante Films

Fighting crime and taking the law into their own hands, vigilantes are some of the most kick-ass characters in film. To celebrate the release of action-packed Robin Hood, arriving in cinemas November 21, we’re taking a look at some of the best vigilante films, from John Wick to The Equaliser…

John Wick (2014)
John Wick definitely takes the law into his own hands, but for more personal reasons than others. When legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) retires after marrying the love of his life, her sudden death leaves him in mourning. This is spirals out of control when a thug steals his prized car and kills the puppy that was a last gift from his wife. His inner assassin is then unleashed as he seeks revenge for his late wife.

The Equaliser (2014)
Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a retired Marine and Defense Intelligence Agency operative who after promising his recently deceased wife that he would leave his old ways behind now lives a quiet life. Unable to sleep, McCall spends some nights reading in a diner when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a teenager who has been manhandled by the Russian mafia, and can’t help but come to her aid. The skills from his mysterious past soon become known, as McCall serves as an avenging machine, taking down anyone who threatens the helpless.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, Law Abiding Citizen follows the story of Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) a family man, whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered in a home invasion. When prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is unable to securely convict the family’s killers he has no choice but to cut a deal with one of them in exchange for their testimony. Years later, the killer is found dead, at the fault of Shelton who hands himself in. But his revenge for this obstruction of justice doesn’t end there…

V for Vendetta (2005)
Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta is set in 2020 London following a World War, the country is police state occupied by a fascist government. The only form of justice seems to be a masked vigilante known only as V (Hugo Weaving) who uses terrorist tactics to fight the oppressors of this bleak world. During a run in with the police V saves a young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman), who becomes his unlikely ally, as they continue the fight against their oppressors.

Kick-Ass (2010)
Taking a more light-hearted approach at the vigilante genre, Kick-Ass is a new take on your average superhero movie. Teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) plans to become a real life superhero, using his love for comics as inspiration. Dave makes a costume and names himself "Kick-Ass,", however on his first outing manages to get stabbed and then hit by a car. He then decides to join forces with the father/daughter vigilante team ‘Big Daddy and Hit Girl’ and another self-made hero called Red Mist to fight crime in the city together.

Robin Hood (2018)
Taron Egerton stars as the most famous vigilante of them all, the fearless Robin of Loxley. Robin is a war-hardened Crusader who, along with commander (Jamie Foxx), mounts an action-packed revolt against the corrupt English monarchy.

Robin Hood is out in cinemas November 21

Wheelchair Athletes Push Their Team Towards The Title While Responding To Adversity On And Off The Court

From director Shaina Allen, producer Michael Esposito, and Emmy Award-winning Executive Producers Nick Nanton and JW Dicks comes THE REBOUND – a feel good story about the Miami Heat Wheels and their quest for their first-ever NWBA Championship – to Digital HD November 20th.

Miami is a city known for its sports and diversity. For the Miami Heat Wheels it’s a city of opportunity, second chances, and a call to win against all odds. THE REBOUND is an insider’s look at the struggling wheelchair basketball team following a defeat at the national championships. In community supported wheelchair basketball programs across the nation, players push their way physically, mentally and emotionally through each season without the recognition or the resources of mainstream sports. Among the Heat Wheels, passion and drive are abundant, but the team’s dwindling checkbook threatens to cut short its attempt to take the national title.

Debut filmmakers Shaina Allen and Mike Esposito step deep inside the lives of three players as they endure and respond to adversity and fight their way to a second chance. Friends, family, and pride hang in the balance as these men find an extraordinary gift in the hand life has dealt. They hope for an education, a big break, and a new life. The cameras don’t stop when the players leave the court: the film follows them through the trials of daily life with a disability. With each victory, the players, and their team, get closer to the idea that anything is possible – and it’s all about how you rebound.

THE REBOUND is a production of Evergrain Studios in association with DNA Films.

Interview with Harry Locke IV - Director, THE CITY OF GOLD

Harry Locke’s latest film is The City of Gold, an action-adventure movie due for release in December. We caught up with the talented, amiable filmmaker to discuss his transition from making short fan-films to bonafide star-driven featues.

When did you come down with the filmmaking bug, Harry?

I was about 14 or 15-years-old when I first started dabbling with taking written word and committing it to screen. A couple of my high-school English teachers allowed us to experiment with doing book presentations outside of the usual three-page paper structure. So I got together with a small group of my friends, and we began shooting what were essentially short films to present to the class. I absolutely fell in love with the collaborative spirit of production, the decisions made in the editorial process, and the excitement of showcasing the finished work to an audience.

Had you had family or friends in the industry?

My father was a Lab Technician in the steel industry, but he had great writing and communication abilities. My mother is a Registered Nurse, with some of the most creative sensibilities of anyone I have ever met. Even though I did not grow up entrenched with film industry folks around me, I thoroughly credit my parents with teaching me the building blocks I use in the filmmaking process.

Do you remember your first camera?

I worked a part-time job at my local library to save enough money to buy a used Canon GL1 that had a ton of mileage on it and three very noticeable dead pixels, but I absolutely loved it. My friends and I used it to shoot a film called NOIR, which was a feature-length endeavour that showcased us running around the Chicagoland area as hit men that were part of a secret organization.

Most filmmakers, especially when they’re starting out, have to hold down another job at the same time – at least until one of their films hits big. Was that the case for you?

Yes, and I have been fortunate that my “day-jobs” have been highly beneficial in furthering along my directing endeavours. I was hired by Ronald Blum to direct The City of Gold right around the time I graduated from film school and was heading into my first post-college gig as an editing instructor for a new film program. The program sent me to Maui, Hawaii to teach a week long intensive where I was connected with Tracy Bennett, Maui’s film commissioner. Tracy encouraged Ron and I to bring our production to Maui, and it was an interaction I would have never made had it not been for my job. Following principal photography, I found full-time employment as a colorist and online editor for Different By Design, an award winning post-production facility in Santa Monica. The owners assisted in giving my editor and I space to cut The City of Gold in the after hours when client work was completed.

How many films have you done?

Since working at Different By Design, I have accumulated over 100 on-screen credits as either a colorist, online-editor, or post-production supervisor. Some of the films I have worked on include ICARUS, which won the 2018 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary and Sean Baker’s Tangerine, which was a breakout at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Having the opportunity to work closely with such acclaimed filmmakers really helped shape some of the decisions I made during the post-production process of The City of Gold. You learn all the things they don’t teach you at film school.

How did you get The City of Gold going?

Robbie Allen, who plays the lead in The City of Gold, brought the project to my attention about a month prior to my graduation from the University of Southern California. Robbie and I had completed a John Constantine fan-film called, Hellblazer, which was enjoying moderate success online. Robbie shared the short film with Ronald Blum, who was impressed enough to consider me in bringing The City of Gold from script to screen. I met with Ron and his wife Devorah at a Cheescake Factory restaurant one evening, and we all instantly connected over the script and the desire to make an awesome movie. From that evening forward, we banded together and forged ahead in making the film a reality.

Ronald Blum wrote the screenplay. Did you and Ronald share the same vision for the film or did you have to compromise here and there?

Ron had initially written the script almost 20 years ago, so there was a level of sanctity that I inherently placed in the material without him ever saying it. While I knew things would have to change here and there due to budgetary or technical reasons, I made it a key focus to make sure Ron’s vision was preserved and that he was satisfied with the final product that was created. I am eternally grateful to him, for giving a 25-year-old who was fresh out of film school, the opportunity to develop a script he had been nurturing for two decades.

How would you describe the movie to someone looking at renting it come December?

The City of Gold is a supernatural adventure/thriller that should make fans of Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider feel right at home with its blend of action, mystery, plot twists, and the pursuit of a long fabled treasure!

SCI-FI star TRACEY BIRDSALL loses home, all possessions in Malibu Fire : Help Rebuild Her Life

Actress Tracey Birdsall, known to sci-fi and fantasy fans for her starring roles in Rogue Warrior : Robot Fighter and Evolution War, lost her home and all possessions in last week’s devastating fire in Malibu.

Birdsall’s eldest daughter Nicky has set up a GoFundMe page to help her mother :
https://www.gofundme.com/tracey-birdsall-rebuild-her-life

"November 10, 2018, the Woolsey fire which raged through Malibu destroyed the home of Tracey Birdsall and her family. As her oldest daughter, aware of the devastation this has caused in her life, I decided to create a GoFundMe for her so people could contribute and support her.

She lived in this home since 2006, raising my younger siblings, being involved in the community, and it was completely destroyed. Only a few succulents still stand in the front yard, and a lone tangerine tree in the back yard. Perhaps most eerie is the standing garage doors, their metal warped and nothing else of the garage present.

As many of you who knew her know, the changing times in her industry and distribution have made the past few years very difficult for her, even though she was working constantly or trying to help others get work, and this was the last thing she owned.

Oddly enough, this week is also the one year anniversary since her mother (my grandmother) died of Alzheimer’s after a lengthy battle - which tore her apart day by day, week by week, and year by year.
My mother bought this home herself, and worked tirelessly every day of her life leading up to this catastrophe in order to provide a place for her family to live. She welcomed friends to not only stay with her, but numerous people over the years have also been welcomed into her home to treat it as their own when they were going through troubles of their own. There was always a blanket and a pillow to be found and a warm meal. Her home was a haven to people she knew, and she opened her heart and her doors to many numerous people, far too many to even count.

Although insurance will undoubtedly help eventually, she was minimally insured and even her fireproof safe in the garage in which she kept resources for emergencies - was turned to unrecognizable dust. Several priceless sentimental items are gone forever, and she hasn't even begun to process their loss.

Perhaps even worse, a neighbor two doors down said that he could have put out the fire, he brought a hose to the front yard just as the City of Malibu shut off the water… I mean, who shuts off the water supply when there are fires? This hose still sat limp in the street when she came to see what was her home.
She has lost everything.

I've never seen her shoulder's so slumped, or the way her fingers tremble while she keeps repeating how glad she is everyone made it out, that her neighbors are okay. She's always been the sort to hide her tears when it's not for a script. My mother's always been the strong one, but she has never seemed as frail as now. Any support and assistance would be greatly appreciated no matter how small. Please help in any way that you can understanding the struggles she has endured, and the tireless hours she works. She is the most loving, caring, understanding, and wonderful mother and friend anyone could ask for.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don’t know what else to do to help her, so I’ve organized this for her."

REVIEW: Solis - Starring Steven Ogg and Alice Lowe

Warning: There may be some spoilers in the review below, nothing too major.

Review: By Jon Donnis
Despite the poster for Solis being nearly identical to the upcoming First Man film. This is a very different film, and in fact I think the Solis poster is much better.

Solis is one of those rare films whereby we only get one living character on screen for the entire film.
Asteroid mining engineer Troy Holloway (played by Steven Ogg, who you may recognise from the GTA game) has woken up on an escape pod, in space, and that pod is on a one way journey to the Sun.

Holloway is alone (except for a dead colleague), and his only help is Commander Roberts who he speaks to through a headset, who is his only hope for rescue.

Hollyway must overcome and survive everything from being frozen to death to being burned alive, not to mention rapid oxygen depletion.

Now this is not some horror film with aliens etc, this is a pure psychological thriller. And in the style of great one person films like Buried or Moon, we have to rely on the excellent performance of Steven Ogg to carry us through.

Where as a similar type of film in Gravity relies on jaw dropping special effects, Solis proves that you don't need 9 figure budgets to make a solid enjoyable film set in space. That's not to say there isn't some great shots here. One that stuck in my mind is as we view the escape pod from behind, surrounded by the darkness of space, only for the camera to pan back and the sun to appear, previously eclipsed by the pod. And then the sheer power and brightness of the sun to overtake the screen.

There is a very decent score too, although perhaps it goes too big too soon, it does add to the film throughout as opposed to taking away anything.

Now I have read a few reviews of the film, and I see a lot of people disappointed with the ending, personally I don't need every little thing explained, written out and showed to me. I like a bit of mystery, a bit of the unknown. But sadly we live in a time whereby film makers often feel the need they have to explain everything and give a complete and full beginning, middle and an end, to satisfy a hungry audience.

Personally I like the intrigue, the unknown, this allows me to ask questions, to talk about things, to examine what I do not know, what I did not see. So the ending I was perfectly fine with.

I thought the film was the perfect length for the kind of film it was. The acting by Ogg was great, and overall I enjoyed the film. It wont be for everyone, and those who only enjoy huge special effects and every little thing laid out for them probably wont enjoy it, but for those of you who have a brain, imagination, and enjoy a good story being told, then give Solis a go, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I give Solis a solid 8/10

Bernsen will play villainous real estate developer Aiden Neville, while “Saved by the Bell” fave Haskins is back as the grandfather, ironically a former sitcom star who borrows from his character’s stream of poignant and sometimes corny advice.

Bryce Xavier (Alexa & Katie, Family Time), James Caverly (Broadway’s Children of a Lesser God), Calhoun Koenig (Moving Parts, Agramon’s Gate), Harley Wallen (Abstruse, Betrayed), and Aphrodite Nikolovski (Cut/Print, Answer This!) are also onboard.

A Bennett Song Holiday begins shooting this month.

Competition: Win The Man Who Invented Christmas on Blu-ray

The Man Who Invented Christmas is released on Bluray on November 12th.

And to celebrate we have a great competition for you and 3 copies to give away.

Synopsis
Starring Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Beauty and the Beast) as Charles Dickens, The Man Who Invented Christmas tells the true story of how the iconic author came to write the seminal yuletide novel A Christmas Carol in only six weeks.

Set in 1840s London, Dickens had been struggling to come up with fresh ideas after the failure of his last three works. However, when he's inspired by the vision of a story that would fire the hearts of humanity, he set out to write and self-publish a book that would reignite his career.

As the likes of Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Academy Award-winner Christopher Plummer) and The Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future start coming to life in his head, Dickens began creating a masterpiece that gave birth to the Christmas we know and love today.

Number 37 - Poster and Trailer

Award-winning Hitchockian suspense thriller Number 37, filmed in Cape Town, releases in select theaters throughout November and On Demand November 20 from Dark Star Pictures.

In a gritty homage to perennial Alfred Hitchcock favorite Rear Window, director Nospiho Dumia’s film focuses on the residents of a block of apartments in the down-and-out Cape Flats neighborhood–which, with its petty thugs, crooked cops, violent loan sharks, and troubled pastors, soon reveals itself to be a very different place from Rear Window’s Greenwich Village of 1954.

Irshaad Ally, Monique Rockman, Ephraim Gordon, Sandi Schultz, Danny Ross, David Manuel, Elton Landrew, and Deon Lotz star in a Nosipho Dumisa directed film, scripted by Dumisa, Travis Taute, and Daryne Joshua.

Synopsis: Set in a rough section of Cape Town, Number 37 follows Randal Hendricks, a small-time crook who becomes wheelchair-bound in a drug deal gone wrong, and his hard-working girlfriend Pam Ismael. To distract Randal during his homebound days of limited mobility, Pam gives him a pair of binoculars. While idly surveying his block, he accidentally witnesses a dirty cop being executed by his gangster neighbor Lawyer. With a loan shark breathing down his neck, Randal decides to blackmail Lawyer, and enlists the help of both his girlfriend and his friend Warren. When the plan goes horribly awry, Randal’s options get more and more restricted—and not even local detective Gail February, investigating the death of her partner, may be able to help him.
