Sky reveals first look and premiere date for highly anticipated documentary Hawking: Can You Hear Me?

California 1974. Family photograph. Copyright Hawking Estate

Sky has today revealed an exclusive first look image, a never-seen-before family photograph, for highly anticipated Sky Original documentary Hawking: Can You Hear Me? The 90-min theatrical documentary, which explores the remarkable human story of Professor Stephen Hawking through unprecedented access to his family and their private archives, is set to premiere on Sky Documentaries and NOW on Monday 20 September.

This never-seen-before family photograph features Professor Stephen Hawking with his then wife Jane, son Robert and daughter Lucy on their California estate in 1974.

The world-famous cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, died in March of 2018. Now his family, friends and colleagues speak candidly, for the first time, about the unseen world behind Hawking's rise to the status of gilded genius and international icon. What was the true human cost – to himself and those around him – of his genius? This documentary explores the incredible life of this iconic physicist, but also the untold human story.

This is the story of Stephen Hawking's life told not by historians, biographers or commentators, but by the people who were there at the time; the people in the room with him. Scenes from critical and defining moments in his life are told by the people who were present as the events and discoveries unfolded, and who were directly impacted by his triumphs and tragedies.

Contributors include Stephen's children Robert, Lucy and Tim, and his first wife Jane, alongside a raft of renowned scientists who consider him an inspiration, a role-model, a peer, and a friend, for a fascinatingly well-rounded portrait of the scientist, the family man, and all the facets of Stephen's life.

The Beatles and India - Trailer - A fascinating, award-winning feature documentary from Ajoy Bose

When the world’s most famous band The Beatles made their seminal trip to India in 1968, not only did it inspire a new musical direction for the band, it paved the way for a brand new sound that still resonates across cultural and musical landscapes to this day.

Now a new, award-winning feature documentary The Beatles and India from Silva Screen Productions and Renoir Pictures explores the lasting legacy from their ground-breaking visit to Rishikesh. It sheds light on how India shaped the development of the greatest ever rock band and their pioneering role in bringing together two vastly different cultures.

This unique historical film chronicles the enduring love affair between The Beatles and India that began more than half a century ago. The Beatles and India follows a rarely seen, fascinating time in John, Paul, George and Ringo’s career and brings it to life with archive footage, recordings and photographs, alongside eye-witness accounts,  expert comments and visually stunning location shots.

In 1968 the legendary band brought their Western celebrity circus to a remote Himalayan ashram in Rishikesh in search of spiritual enlightenment. What happened next had a profound effect on the whole band… and the whole world.

Inspired by Ajoy Bose’s book, Across The Universe - The Beatles In India,  British Indian music entrepreneur Reynold D’Silva has taken the amazing saga further by producing Bose’s directorial debut.  Bose and cultural researcher, co-director, Pete Compton,  have created an audio-visual presentation that stands apart from the many documentaries on the band,  delving deep into the most crucial period of their evolution from the world’s most famous pop stars into multi-faceted pioneering musical artists.

The documentary won Best Film Audience Choice and Best Music in Tongues On Fire, the 2021 UK Asian Film Festival, where it premiered earlier this year.

An accompanying album, Songs Inspired By The Film The Beatles And India performed by Indian artists and the score album will be released on Silva Screen Records on 29 October, along with a DVD and Blu-ray release of the film from Cherry Red.

The Beatles and India a fascinating, award-winning feature documentary from Ajoy Bose, which gets its UK digital release on 4 October courtesy of 101 Films and will also screen at select Everyman Cinemas on 31 August as part of their Everyman Music Film Festival.

New documentary explores the magazine that shaped British culture

How one magazine transformed British photography

Ship Of Life Films have announced the release of their new documentary, Picture Stories, about the life and legacy of Picture Post, the revolutionary magazine which shaped perceptions of British life during and after the Second World War.

Ahead of its UK theatrical release on the 24th September, the documentary will also have special screenings at the Royal Photographic Society in Bristol on 15th September, and the Photography Show (NEC Birmingham) on 18th September. Following the UK theatrical release, Picture Stories will be released on digital download on 30th September.

Britain's best-selling magazine during the Second World War, and hugely influential for years after, Picture Post revolutionised the picture magazine, showing Britain to the British in a fundamentally new way.

Using the freedom of new camera technology, Picture Post's photographers portrayed the lives of ordinary people, at home, on the street, unposed - in a way they had never been seen before.

Through its powerful, socially committed picture stories, Picture Post helped to transform post-war Britain, and change the face of British photography.

The story of this iconic magazine is told by its photographers, writers and editors. Leading contemporary photographers reflect on Picture Post's extraordinary images and influence.

Commenting on the release, film director Rob West stated; "Picture Post is arguably the most important magazine in British social history. It was born under the threat of War, and survived and flourished under the intense bombardment of the Blitz. Extraordinarily, during the height of World War II, Picture Post was looking ahead to post-War life and to the possibility of fundamental social reform.

Picture Post had a huge impact on national awareness of social conditions in Britain and of the need for a comprehensive welfare state and a national health service. It brought cutting-edge photography, and the picture story, to a mass audience. It changed people's understanding of their own country by showing, vividly, what British life was really like.

I wanted to bring the extraordinary story of Picture Post and its photographers to modern audiences. Many of things we take for granted in photography, and our understanding of photographs and picture layout, started with Picture Post. Many of our ideas about British society were forged by Picture Post and its unique group of creators."

UK screenings of Picture Stories will take place from 15th September and will be available on Digital Download from 30th September. More info can be found at picturestoriesfilm.com

When The Screaming Starts - New comedy-horror set for World Premiere at FrightFest this Augus

When the Screaming Starts, will have its World Premiere at FrightFest this August. Described as "If Louis Theroux met the Manson Family", the film will debut alongside this year's most prestigious and hotly anticipated horrors and thrillers at Leicester Square’s Cineworld on 28th August. The film will have two additional screenings, one later that night and another on Sunday 29th.

The film includes Yasen Atour, who will star alongside Henry Cavill in the second season of The Witcher, as well as up and coming talent Ed Hartland (The Crown), Octavia Gilmore (For Sale) and Jared Rogers (making his second appearance at FrightFest following 2018’s Killer Weekend).

When The Screaming Starts marks the feature debut of filmmaker Conor Boru, and was overseen by a production team which includes Dom Lenoir, who directed and produced the award-winning thriller Winter Ridge.

When Norman Graysmith is invited into the home of an aspiring serial killer, Aidan Mendle, he believes he has found the subject for the documentary that will transform his failing career. Initially the production goes well with Aidan freely opening up about his desire to kill, but when his early attempt at committing murder falls apart, things begin to unravel.

Aidan desperately tries to maintain his position as the next Charles Manson by starting a murder cult, interviewing prospective members for what he affectionately calls his “family”. The potential candidates provide a rich tapestry of misfits, from the lost and confused to the (most likely) psychopathic. Events begin to spiral out of control and Norman watches his dreams crumbling around him.

A wannabe serial killer, a warped filmmaker, and a murderous cult on a blood-soaked rampage. When The Screaming Starts is a darkly comic tale of how far we will go in order to achieve our ambitions.

Director Conor Boru was thrilled with the news that the film was heading to the prestigious horror festival; “We’re honoured to have our world premiere at FrightFest! The fact that it is in our home city makes it even more special. We cannot wait to share our twisted vision with the ravenous FrightFest crowd!”

When The Screaming Starts will have its World Premiere at FrightFest 2021 on 28th August.

His illness causes periods of confusion and violent outbursts, which the other members of staff can't handle, but with Sarah he begins to build a real bond. Sarah's success at managing Tony and the other patients helps build her confidence and restore her self-belief.

Then March 2020 hits and everything Sarah has achieved is thrown into doubt with the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic. She and her colleagues tirelessly fight tooth and nail, ill-equipped, poorly prepared, and seemingly left helpless by the powers that be. A determined Sarah goes to extraordinary lengths to protect those in her care, whose conditions make their suffering and isolation all the more traumatic. But the staff's unwavering commitment, compassion and heroic efforts can only do so much, and Sarah is pushed into a dark corner and desperately looks for a way out.

Help is coming soon to Channel 4 and All 4.

Escape From Extinction - Narrated by Dame Helen Mirren - New Trailer

Synopsis:

A pioneering feature documentary narrated by Academy Award® Winner, Dame Helen Mirren, Escape From Extinction explores the critical efforts of major zoological organisations to preserve millions of species on the verge of disappearing forever, through a unique mix of conservation, rescue breeding and environmental awareness.

Featuring rare footage of endangered animals and interviews with the world’s leading animal welfare and conservation specialists, this powerful film explores the work of zoos and aquariums across the globe as they race to protect and preserve animals from all seven of Earth’s continents. With the very web of life on Earth being threatened in what scientists are calling a ‘Sixth Mass Extinction’, such organisations are nature’s last arks of hope in preserving the rich legacy of life on our world. Without this help – and the global engagement of the public – the biological treasures we hope to pass on to our children and grandchildren may disappear forever within a generation.

Hard-hitting, hopeful and resonating with audiences of all ages, this film is critical to mobilising the support Earth’s animals need – and need now.

Sing 2 - Official Trailer

This holiday season, the new chapter in Illumination’s smash animated franchise arrives with big dreams and spectacular hit songs as the ever-optimistic koala, Buster Moon, and his all-star cast of performers prepare to launch their most dazzling stage extravaganza yet …all in the glittering entertainment capital of the world. There’s just one hitch: They first have to persuade the world’s most reclusive rock star—played by global music icon Bono, in his animated film debut—to join them.

Buster (Oscar® winner Matthew McConaughey) has turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City.

But with no connections, Buster and his cast—including harried mother pig Rosita (Oscar® winner Reese Witherspoon), rocker porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson), earnest gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton), shy elephant Meena (Tori Kelly) and, of course, porcine provocateur Gunter (Nick Kroll)—have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by ruthless mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal (Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale).

In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star lion rock legend Clay Calloway (Bono). Problem is, Buster has never met Clay, an artist who shut himself away from the world more than a decade ago after the loss of his wife. Even worse, Buster has failed to realize that Mr. Crystal is an egocentric gangster who would rather drop somebody off the roof of a building than be lied to.

As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world theatrical masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Rosita’s leading role in the show gets ripped away and handed to Mr. Crystal’s spoiled daughter, Porsha, played by Grammy-nominated artist Halsey. Desperate to save the show, and his life, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage.

What begins as a dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.

The BFI announced full details of a new season that will showcase exciting and daring filmmaker talent from the Middle East; THE TIME IS NEW: SELECTIONS FROM CONTEMPORARY ARAB CINEMA, will run at BFI Southbank from 27 August – 5 October, with selected titles also available on BFI Player Subscription. The season presents films made from 2019-2021 that challenge the stereotypical, weave personal narratives into broader questions and show the lyricism, humanity and poetry of everyday Arab life. It is programmed by Youssef Shazli and Alia Ayman, co-founders of Cairo-based Zawya, Egypt's leading arthouse cinema and distributor.

Across fiction, documentary, shorts and genre-defying films, THE TIME IS NEW will bring emerging and important Arab filmmaker voices to the UK, including a number of female directors. One of these is Egyptian filmmaker Ayten Amin, whose award-winning second feature SOUAD (2021), will launch the season when it is released by the BFI in cinemas UK-wide on 27 August. An engrossing portrait of Middle Eastern 'Generation Z', which was selected for Cannes 2020 and the Berlin and Tribeca film festivals this year, it looks at conflicting identities and the devastating power of social media. THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN (Kaouther Ben Hania, 2020) is an Oscar-nominated film about a Syrian refugee in Lebanon who allows his back to become a canvas for a famous tattoo artist and YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY (Amjad Abu Alala, 2019) is the story of a young man haunted by a prophecy that his life will end as soon as he turns 20. A screening of YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY on 23 September will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with the director Amjad Abu Alala.

The theme of cinema itself plays a role in the season, with stories including an intimate and personal exploration of Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine and her family in LET'S TALK (Marianne Khoury, 2019); a screening on 13 September will include a pre-recorded Q&A with director Marianne Khoury. TALKING ABOUT TREES (Suhaib Gasmelbari, 2019) is a documentary following Sudanese filmmakers as they attempt to take over a run-down cinema and revive their beloved Sundanese film club. There is also the return of long absent director Elia Suleiman with IT MUST BE HEAVEN (2019), starring himself as a silent protagonist who leaves Palestine to visit Paris and New York to find producers for his next film.

THE NARRATIVE ENCOUNTERS: SHORTS PROGRAMME highlights the work of a diverse group of filmmakers at different stages in their careers, who all have a singular approach to questions that are at once political, intimate and formal. From the humorous to the somewhat tragic, these films offer a glimpse into the distinct cinematic preoccupations of some of the most promising voices in Arab cinema today. Films included in the programme are: THE TRAP (Nada Riyadh, 2019), I AM AFRAID TO FORGET YOUR FACE (Sameh Alaa, 2020), AZIZA (Soudade Kaadan, 2019), THE BATH (Anissa Daoud, 2020), DROUGHT (Remi Itani, 2020) and MARADONA'S LEGS (Firas Khoury, 2019).
