Interview with Benjamin Bratt - Ride Along 2

In Ride Along 2, Benjamin Bratt stars as Antonio Pope, a local Miami ‘businessman’ and the prime suspect in Ice Cube and Kevin Hart’s hilarious new adventure.  For Bratt, an actor best known for his Emmy-nominated turn in Law & Order (with an additional 25-plus films to his credit), the new role also marks a welcome departure – here playing a character on the wrong side of the law in his very first action-comedy.

Q: What’s it like joining the world of Ride Along?

A: Joining the world of Ride Along is like jumping onboard a fast moving train (laughs).

Q: Tell us about the character you play?

A: I play a man by the name of Antonio Pope who is almost the personification of this great, fabulous, wealthy city. He’s a celebrated citizen, clearly a successful businessman and a friend of politicians. He’s also a playboy, a man who has all the right toys and all the right clients. And we also learn quite early on in the film that he’s involved with certain illicit activities. But in his mind he’s just a good businessman. So yes, to play someone like that who lives in that kind of elevated layer of fine air, you know, and playing opposite Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, was a pretty great thing to shoot.

Q: You don’t usually play a character like this. Was that fun for you?

A: Absolutely. You know, the funny thing is I’m often the cop or the detective. So not only is it a first for me to be in an action comedy, it’s also a first to play this kind of villain.

Q: What was the biggest challenge in making it?

A: The trick for me as an actor was to not play it for comedy. That’s Kevin’s job and Ken’s (co-star Ken Jeong). I had to find the gravitas to bring to it. And this is something the director, Tim Story, and I talked about. The only way a character like this can work is if you bring that sense of danger and threat... That said, in the writing, there is also a kind of stylized approach to the character that you want to try to make real. He speaks in a certain way. He says certain things that are just a little off – things that make you think that here’s a guy who no one says no to and that he has to take things to a higher and higher and level to get the thrill. He might just be a little bit of a freak, you know (laughs).

Q: What was it like filming here in Miami?

A: The truth is you could have made Ride Along 2 in any city and made it work. But to set it here in Miami, you know, one of the most sexy, sensual, international cities in the country, it just brings that much more to the film. And I think it’s clear that the city itself emerges as one of the major characters in the film. You can feel that.

Q: What is it about the combination of Ice Cube and Kevin Hart that works so well on screen?

A: They’re a continuation of a long line of comedians who make this sort of dynamic work. And it’s as old as film comedy, really. Not to date myself, but you can go back as far as Laurel and Hardy… They’re part of that tradition of the eternal movie ‘odd couple’. There’s an ever present element of friction. They just don’t go well together. And yet you find underneath it all there’s a true care and love there. That’s the thing. As much as they don’t belong together, they can’t be apart. They ultimately care about each other. When you have someone like Kevin Hart who is a master comedian at the top of his game opposite someone who is as real and OG as Ice Cube, it’s organic.

Q: Do we see it again in the new film?

A: They created that alchemy in the first one. Here in the second one, all the stakes are elevated. The film is bigger. More action. The writing is more comedic. And their alchemy, their chemistry – they can answer each other’s lines without effort. I mean, Cube says more with a look sometimes than he does with a word. That comes with familiarity and spending time together. The good news for audiences is the banter is the star. The banter, the friction between them, is really what drives the films.

Ride Along 2 is out on Blu-ray and DVD now.

The Modern Master Of Horror: The Rise Of James Wan

A Malaysian-born, Australian film director, James Wan is most known for his impact on the horror genre since debuting his short film Saw in 2003. Honing his unique style from a young age, the director won Best Guerilla Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival for his first film Stygian, before breaking fresh ground with the gore-filled Saw. Wan then became known as the dominating force in quality horror films with the likes of critically-acclaimed and box office hits Insidious and The Conjuring – the latter of which remains the highest grossing original horror movie of all time, second only to The Exorcist.

The director’s next project sees him returning to the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 2 (in cinemas June 13). Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as the creepy couple, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations yet, travel to Enfield, London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.

Watch the trailer here

Ahead of the release of The Conjuring 2, we take a look at James Wan’s impressive run of horror films in the 13 years since he made Saw; showing how scares can still be an art-form when they come from this modern master of horror.

Saw (2004)
Demonstrating genius early on, after James Wan initially struggled to get the script for Saw produced he decided to shoot one of the scenes from the screenplay as a short film with the same title to attract attention. This worked and the film was green lit with a small budget and shot for 18 days. Telling the dark story of two men who wake to find themselves chained in a decrepit bathroom at the mercy of a sadistic mad man’s horrifying game, 6pm is the deadline for one man to escape and the other to save his family by killing him before he does. Although critical responses were mixed, the film gained a cult following and grossed $100 million worldwide – making it the most profitable horror film since Scream.

Insidious (2011)
With the extraordinary success of Saw, James Wan felt pressure from studios to create another gory horror and therefore made Insidious independently to ensure that he had creative control. Determined to show how restraint and silence could also be used to build scares, Wan stated that he enjoyed making “a film with lots of creepy, bizarre moments that a studio might not 'get.'” The story follows a family who try to prevent evil spirits from trapping their son in a creepy realm called The Further after a mysterious incident in their attic. The film’s twisted plot and slow build of suspense was lauded by critics and attracted cinema audiences in their droves, ensuring that a sequel would be in the works soon enough.

The Conjuring (2013)
James Wan was drawn to stories of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, a couple who have been linked to every major ghost story to hit mainstream news, including what is now known as The Amityville Horror and The Haunting In Connecticut. The Conjuring focuses on one of their most chilling cases, that of the Perron family, who become terrorized by satanic forces at their home on a remote farm. The film received positive reviews from critics and smashed the box office, grossing over 15 times its production budget and making a profit of roughly $161 million.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
James Wan returned to make The Conjuring 2 after becoming excited at the prospect of continuing the saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Bringing the original cast back to scare cinema audiences once again, this time the Warrens cross the pond to investigate the notorious Enfield Poltergeist. Following the chilling case that gripped the nation back in 1977 involving the alleged haunting of two young girls in a suburban council house, the film is set to be truly terrifying.

BEST BOXING FILMS

Fans know that boxing means blood, sweat and tears and pushing yourself harder than ever. The best boxing films know how to explore the personal and professional life of a boxer, a part of the reason why the genre does so well. Cinema loves stories about the struggle to succeed and underdogs rising to the top. Orthodox, out May 16th on DVD and digital platforms, gives a fresh take on the genre, and shines a light on a young boy bullied for his Jewish faith. He takes up the sport as self-defence, which alienates him from his religious community. To celebrate the release, we’ve rounded up some of the best boxing films to hit the big screen…

Do you agree with this list? Did we miss any film out? Let us know in the comments.

Orthodox (2016)
When Benjamin, a young Orthodox Jewish boy (played as an adult by Stephen Graham), takes up boxing for self-defence after years of bullying over his faith, he begins to become alienated from his devoutly religious community – and lands himself in prison. Upon his release years later, Benjamin is desperate to start afresh and provide for the ones he loves. However, it isn’t long before his previous involvement with a tangled web of criminal activity catches up with him and threatens to destroy his new way of life.

Rocky (1976)
It wouldn’t be possible to make a list of boxing films with including Rocky; it’s the ultimate underdog story built for both fans and non-fans of the sport. Sylvester Stallone, in his most iconic role, stars as Rocky Balboa, a small time, working-class club boxer who gets a shot at competing in the world heavyweight championship. As we follow his story, we are taken on an intimate look at what it takes to make it as a professional boxer. The film turned Stallone into a movie star and a further six films in the long-running franchise.

Raging Bull (1980)
In what is often considered master filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s greatest work, Raging Bull stars Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, a middleweight boxer whose violent energy and obsessive rage destroys his relationship with his wife and family. Scorsese brilliantly captures Jake’s inner demons, exploring how his mind is rattled by his ego and jealousy, which eventually leads him to deal with his problems both in and out of the ring.

Ali (2001)
He’s probably the most famous boxer in history and it was Will Smith who took on the challenge of portraying him on the big screen. Ali follows Muhammad Ali’s personal and professional life; his conversion to Islam, refusal to fight in the Vietnam War and claiming the heavyweight title from rival Sonny Liston. Smith had big shoes to fill playing the iconic boxer, but the result serves as a triumph to Ali’s legendary reign.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Director Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby is a modern masterpiece of the genre, a film that follows the ambition of a young female fighter and her older pro-trainer. Hilary Swank pulls off a stunning performance as Maggie Fitzgerald, an amateur boxer who stops at nothing to make it to the top. Eastwood plays the role of her underappreciated trainer who sets out to redeem his career by agreeing to train Maggie. The Oscar-winning film is both a celebration and gritty depiction of the sport that perfectly examines the notion that underdogs may or may not always come out on top, all the while raising the bar for the sports genre.

The Fighter (2010)
It was Christian Bale who took home all the awards for his portrayal of Dicky Eklund, the brother of professional boxer Micky Ward (played by Mark Wahlberg) in this Oscar favourite. However, while Bale stole the show as the supportive older brother, who was also a former boxer and trainer, the film tells the true story of Ward, a welterweight boxer who found success though struggled to keep it. Director David O’Russell balances the drama in the ring with Ward’s personal and family issues, exploring his dysfunctional relationships with his controlling mother, domineering sisters and troubled brother.

Creed (2015)
Sylvester Stallone put on his Rocky gloves yet again, nine years after 2006’s Rocky Balboa, in Creed. Recruiting Michael B. Jordan in the title role, director Ryan Coogler shifts the focus of the story to Adonis ‘Donnie’ Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, an ex-con who decides to take up boxing as a profession. Determined to fulfil his dream, Donnie travels to Philadelphia and lands in the hands of now-retired boxer Rocky who agrees to train him. Staying true to the predecessor’s roots, Creed lays out the framework to allow Stallone to pass the mantle into the capable hands of Jordan, who shines, for further bouts in the ring.
