5 Matthias Schoenaerts Films You Need To Watch

The muscles from Antwerp, Belgian-born actor Matthias Schoenaerts, takes to cinema screens this month in DISORDER – a thriller surrounding Matthias’ Vincent, a soldier with PTSD employed privately to protect the young family of an arms dealer. Matthias’ rise to fame has included carefully chosen roles in some great films. Here we take a look at five Schoenaerts films you need to watch.

Daens (1992)
Set in the 1890s, this film tells a tale of child labour, horrible working conditions and unfair politics within the Catholic community in the textile town of Aalst. Father Adolf Daens visits the town and is disgusted with the actions within the community. Father Daens writes a few columns in the Catholic paper regarding the mistreatment, leading to expulsion in the Catholic party. Daens then creates the Christian Democrats, is elected to Parliament, and must choose between serving God and serving the people. Daens was Schoenaert’s first film where he starred alongside his father, Julien Schoenarts, and was nominated for the Oscar’s Best Foreign Language Film in 1993.

Love Belongs to Everyone (Dennis Van Rita) (2006)
Matthias Schoenaerts stars in this film as Dennis, a man sentenced to prison for a rape sentence, then released early for his good behaviour. His parents try their hardest to keep him out of trouble, until the victim’s sister starts a hate campaign against Dennis to land him back in jail. Another abuse is reported, leading to Dennis being sent back and beaten until an unlikely source decides to help him out. Love Belongs to Everyone was Schoenaerts’s first starring role, leading to many more in the years to come.

Loft (2008)
As Belgium’s highest grossing film, Loft features mystery, drama, and a thrilling storyline. Five friends rent out a loft together where they each meet their mistresses in secrecy. When the body of a woman appears in the loft one day, the five men accuse each other of murder. Schoenaerts plays Flip, one the five friends.

Bullhead (2011)
Bullhead follows Schoenaerts’ character, Jacky Vammarsenille. Jacky’s steroid-fuelled life as a cattle farmer eventually leads him to making a deal with a shady meat trader. Jacky must face the consequences of an assonated federal agent and a woman from his traumatic past. Bullhead was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the 2012 Oscars and won numerous awards at film festivals around the world.

Rust and Bone (2012)
This romantic tale surrounded by life-changing events stars Matthias Schoeneart as Alain, a young boxer who falls in love with killer whale trainer, Stephanie. Stephanie must overcome a terrible accident, while learning to love Alain even more. Rust and Bone was nominated for two Golden Globe awards.

Watch Matthias in his next must-watch film: DISORDER opens in the UK on March 25th.

Kristen Wiig’s most underrated performances

An actress, comedian and producer, Kristen Wiig is undoubtedly a lady with many talents. Dropping out of school to relocate to LA at the young age of 19, the young girl full of optimism is to thank for all her impressive accomplishments.

Originally taking to the limelight in improv comedy, it was her role in feel-good Christmas film Unaccompanied Minors (2006) that saw her debut into the world of film, and her hysterically funny performance in Bridesmaids (2011) that put her on the A-list. She has shown an impressive range, from balls-out comedy Knocked Up (2007) to animated family film Despicable Me (2010), and even sarcastic PR woman in Ridley Scott’s The Martian (2015).

Her latest role in Welcome to Me sees her as Alice, an extraordinary woman who after winning the lottery, buys her own TV talk show to broadcast her dirty laundry as both a form of exhibitionism and a platform to share her peculiar views on everything from nutrition to relationships to neutering pets.  As her national audience rapidly grows, her family, friends and colleagues all become increasingly entangled in Alice’s show.

To celebrate the release on March 25, we take a look at some of Wiig’s performances that you might have missed but should definitely check out over the long weekend.

Whip It (2009)
Centered on seventeen year-old misfit Bliss (Ellen Page), who continuously lets her mother down in the beauty pageants that she is made to do, Whip It is the story of finding your place. When Bliss discovers the world of women’s roller derby one night, she lies about her age and signs up to the violent sport without telling her parents. Wiig leads the way as the team captain, Maggie Mayhem, who becomes a role model to Bliss when her parents find out, teen dramas take hold and she needs someone to talk to.

Girl Most Likely (2012)
Girl Most Likely sees Wiig as Imogene, a struggling playwright working a low-paying job at a magazine. After wasting her opportunity to become the next big thing, cracks start to show when she can no-longer hold on to the glamorous New York City lifestyle. As things turn from bad to worse, she ends up staging suicide in an attempt to win back her ex. After the attempt fails, she winds up in the custody of her gambling-addict mother and must learn to accept her strange family if she ever wants to find her feet again.

The Skeleton Twins (2014)
Winning the Screenwriting Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, The Skeleton Twins finds Wiig as the twin of fellow SNL alum Bill Hader. After ten years of estrangement, the pair coincidently cheat death on the same day. Using their reunion as a chance to figure out where their lives went wrong, they quickly come to realise that the solution to fixing themselves might just lie within each other. With Wiig on top form, her role as Maggie saw her effortlessly fulfilling a comic, dramatic range of talent in a single role.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
Beginning at the crossroads of the fading hippie movement, The Diary of a Teenage Girl tells the story of expressive teenager Minnie. Having Wiig as her hard-partying, wayward mother, she finds herself longing for love and acceptance elsewhere. When that happens to lead to a complex love affair with her mother’s boyfriend, what follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening. With a dramatic role to play, Wiig is outright, expertly expressing heaps of rage and wildness as she yearns for her bygone years.

Welcome to Me (2016)
Hilariously dark Welcome To Me sees Wiig as Alice Klieg, a recent lottery-winning millionaire with borderline personality disorder. Deciding to use her new-found wealth to write and star in an autobiographical talk show, her family and friends to struggle to come to terms with her ludicrous antics. Soon it all gets too much, and the millionaire lifestyle starts to not appear as exciting as it first seemed. Captivating by using her natural silliness, Wiig effortlessly creates a powerful performance to communicate a complicated psychological reality.

Top 5 Diane Kruger Films

The actress beautiful enough to launch a thousand ships as Helen of Troy brings her talent back to the big screen opposite Matthias Schoenaerts this month in thriller DISORDER. Here’s a look at some of Diane Krugers best roles!

National Treasure (2004)
Diane Kruger starred alongside Nicholas Cage in this adventure to uncovering a secret treasure trove before dangerous mercenaries get to it first. The team does anything they can –even if it means stealing the Declaration of Independence—to find clues left behind by the Founding Fathers. Inglorious Bastards (2009)

The story follows Shosanna Dreyfus, a young Jewish refugee, who vows to seek revenge on the Nazi officer Colonel Hans Landa for murdering her family. Her plan is set into motion years later after she becomes the owner of a movie theatre and a love interest for a German war hero. Kruger plays Bridget von Hammersmark, an actress secretly working as an informant for the allies. The film took home an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award in 2010.

Unknown (2011)
Diane Kruger leads next to Liam Neeson in this mysterious thriller. Dr. Martin Harris (Neeson), a biochemist, arrives in Berlin with his wife Elizabeth (January Jones) to attend a scientific conference. Four days later, he wakes up out of a coma only to discover his identity is completely replaced. With the help of Gina (Kruger) and a few other friendly people, Dr. Harris seeks out the mystery behind his lost identity.

Disorder (2015)
Disorder follows Vincent, a former French soldier with PTSD, played by the up and coming Matthias Schoenaerts. Vincent returns from war and is offered a job as a security guard during a glamorous party at an estate in the south of France, hosted by a Lebanese businessman and his wife, Jesse (Kruger). Vincent is later added as Jessie and her son Ali’s security guard while her husband is away. Things start to get interesting for the trio when Vincent’s paranoia from his PTSD starts to set in and an imminent threat on the family is placed.

Bodyguard Films

Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger star in DISORDER (in cinemas Friday 25th), a film about a soldier suffering with PTSD who takes a private security job as bodyguard to the young family of an arms dealer. Has Matthias’ Vincent bitten of more than he can chew? To mark the release, we’ve pulled together a list of our favourite ‘bodyguard’ films!

The Bodyguard (1992)
Former presidential bodyguard Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) is assigned a new role as security for Rachel Marron, (Whitney Houston) a famous pop singer who received death threats. His strict rules leave the singer and her entourage a little upset, until the stalker does something drastic. A romantic affair between Frank and Rachel adds another layer to this thriller.

The Pacifier (2005)
In this Disney film, Vin Diesel starts as Shane Wolfe, a Navy SEAL assigned to protect the five children of a deceased government scientist. Many enemies of the scientist are on the hunt for his top-secret experiment, which is located in the house his children live in.  Although he was put in charge of security, Shane finds himself acting more as a nanny caught up in ever more absurd situations!

Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Former bodyguard to the president Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) finds himself trapped within the White House while a mastermind terrorist kidnaps the president and essentially takes over the whole building. Until responders can defeat the terrorist, they must rely on Banning and his previous experience to help save the President and protect the nation. This one’s an action-packed rollercoaster.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016)
This recent thriller is based on the true story of the Benghazi attack that took place 11 September, 2012. During the attack on the US compound in Libya, the Ambassador is tragically killed. A Six man team tries to handle the situation the best way they possibly can while the chaos continues around them. The attack has been under the spotlight recently as Hilary Clinton, a democratic presidential hopeful, has been accused of not acting to prevent it.

Night at the Museum (2006)
Ben Stiller stars as Larry Daley, the new night security guard at the Museum of Natural History. To Larry’s surprise, the museum comes to life during the night, making his job all the more exciting and stressful. With a star-studded cast including Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Robin Williams and Ricky Gervais, Night at the Museum’s success led to two more films for the franchise. Larry finds himself acting as bodyguard to historic figures, animals, and artefacts!

Let Matthias protect you when DISORDER hits screen March 25th!

The Best of John Cusack

John Cusack plays the fierce Roman warrior Lucius in Daniel Lee’s new martial arts epic, DRAGON BLADE. In the action-packed film, Lucius meets Huo An (Jackie Chan), leader of the Silk Road Protection Squad and asks for shelter from the harsh drought of the desert. After setting aside their differences the two join forces to fight the corrupt Roman leader Tiberius (Adrien Brody) and his army in an epic battle between two of history’s most dominant empires. To mark DRAGON BLADE’s arrival on Blu-ray and DVD from 14th March 2016, courtesy of Signature Entertainment, we take a look at John Cusack’s diverse range of past roles.

Being John Malkovich
In one of the most original and thought-provoking films of the 90s, John Cusack gets the opportunity to see the world from John Malkovich’s eyes, in the most literal way imaginable. After finding a portal in his office that transports you inside the mind and body of the acclaimed film and theatre actor, Craig Schwartz (Cusack) becomes addicted to his new escape but fails to keep this revelation a secret, leading to him selling tickets to all of those who want to be someone else for 15 minutes at a time. Cusack succeeds in being compassionate enough for audiences to empathise and understand his actions, whilst also carrying off the creepy and perverse nature of his character to make the audience also question his motives.

Maps To The Stars
After slipping away from the expressive and artistic side of the Hollywood scene, this role for Cusack seemed to represent a return to form. He plays TV Psychologist Dr. Stafford Weiss, pandering to his many celebrity clients and his immensely successful child actor son, Benji. Cusack becomes a major part of the narrative as secrets are revealed about his personal and professional past, in a film that aims an attack on the ugly, superficial side of Hollywood fame and lifestyle; something Cusack has always looked to avoid in his career.

2012
Having said that, it doesn’t mean Cusack shies away from the big budget blockbuster when they come a’calling, as he plays Jackson Curtis, a man who is seen mainly running for his life as the ground caves in and waves crash into skyscrapers in Roland Emerich’s disaster flick 2012. Needing to represent the steadiness for which all the destruction revolves around, Cusack’s father and distant husband gives the audience the calming reassurance that everything might just be ok in the end, even though the world is clearly ending... Good ridiculous disaster fun for all!

The Sure Thing
Going all the way back to 1980 now, John Cusack bursts onto the Hollywood scene in Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing. Walter "Gib" Gibson (Cusack), is a self-involved college freshman who makes plans to head to California, there to touch base (and a few other things) with a "sure thing" played by Nicollette Sheridan. Likewise planning a westward journey is coed Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga), a control freak who has a wealthy, stuffy fiancé over there. Gib and Alison despise one another on sight -- so naturally, they are compelled to travel to California together. The fact that everyone in the audience knows precisely how this one will end up is inconsequential; Cusack and Zuniga deliver such engaging performances that we're pulling for them to wise up and discover one another from the very first scene.

High Fidelity
This is the kind of role that Cusack was born to play, where he feels most at home. Cusack has never really been viewed as a sex symbol, or an action star, but he does play ‘cool’ very well. High Fidelity tells the story of a man searching for the love of his life, whilst working in his record store, ‘Championship Vinyl’, with Jack Black. Cusack’s character literally talks the audience through the film by breaking the fourth wall and sharing his innermost insecurities, secrets and often ranting about his favourite records and bands. Based on the novel by Nick Hornby, Cusack does a great job of capturing our lead character’s sheer desperation to find the Vinyl playing, denim jack rocking woman of his dreams.

Love & Mercy
One of last year’s most beloved films, Love & Mercy tells the story of the musical genius behind the Beach Boys; Brian Wilson. Split into two parts, the role is shared between two actors: Paul Dano in the early years when the group are taking the music scene by storm, and coming to terms with his terrible illness; followed by John Cusack who plays Wilson in the 80s, struggling to deal with his abusive therapist (Paul Giamatti) and falling in love with Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks). Cusack does an excellent job of playing a broken and confused music icon, with great performances coming from everyone; this is definitely not a film to miss for any music fan.

Con Air
This action movie classic is easily thought of as a Nic Cage and John Malkovich feature, but in the midst of all the chaos and mayhem is John Cusack’s air traffic controller, Vince Larkin, fighting passionately for support for the film’s hero, Cameron Poe (Cage). Poe is a man flying home from prison on board a plane full of incredibly dangerous and psychotic criminals, lead by Cyrus (Malkovich), who breaks free and attempts to highjack his freedom. For every beefed up Nic Cage there’s a John Cusack behind the scenes fighting for a ‘good man’.

Grosse Point Blank
Here Cusack plays a depressed, moralistic hitman who returns to his home town for a high-school reunion and the girl he left behind. The movie trailer narration just writes itself doesn’t it? Grosse Point Blank is cherished by many and it’s easy to see why: cheesy lines, crazy shoot outs and the kind of quick witted comedy only found in a 90s cult classic. The film was actually co-written by Cusack and succeeds once again at being cool without being too cute, and although it’s slightly absurd it owns it in a uniquely satisfying fashion.

Adrien Brody Retrospective

In Daniel Lee’s action epic DRAGON BLADE, Oscar-winner Adrien Brody plays the role of the ruthless and power –hungry Roman General Tiberius. The ambitious General, who killed his father and blinded his younger brother, is pitted against Huo An (Jackie Chan) and Roman legion leader General Lucius (John Cusack), who have been wrongfully accused of treason and are trying to clear their names. Brody’s character is motivated by a merciless desire for ultimate power, and his line “I like people to hate me. Their hatred makes me feel alive” encapsulates Tiberius’s aggressiveness. To mark DRAGON BLADE’s arrival on Blu-ray and DVD from 14th March 2016, courtesy of Signature Entertainment, we take a look at Adrien Brody’s diverse range of past roles.

The Pianist (2002)
In this gut wrenching adaptation of Polish composer and World War II survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman’s autobiography, Brody gives the best performance of his career. He plays Szpilman, a renowned Jewish pianist who is separated from his family as they’re sent off on cattle trucks to Auschwitz. Left to hide and fend for himself in an occupied Warsaw, he witnesses firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust. It’s almost as hard for us to watch as it is for Szpilman, as the scenes director Roman Polanski creates are a devastating insight into the dehumanising experiences people were forced to endure during 1940s Eastern Europe. Brody’s performance is just as chilling, from the dramatic physical transformation he goes through to the emotions he expresses despite little dialogue. This breakout role resulted in Brody becoming the youngest actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor and established him as a true force in the industry.

Midnight in Paris (2011)
Brody has a small supporting role in this fantastically unique Woody Allen film, alongside other megastars such as Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and Kathy Bates. The films centres on Gil (Owen Wilson), a screenwriter who dreams of attaining the literary success of his idols Hemingway and Fitzgerald. On vacation with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams) in Paris, he is enthralled by the poetic undertones he sees amongst the Paris streets and inexplicably time travels back to the 1920s, where he comes face to face with literary and artistic legends. Adrien Brody makes his appearance as Salvador Dalí, a flashy, over-the-top Surrealist painter.  His hilarious depiction of Dalí’s strange eccentricities provides one of the most entertaining and memorable scenes in the movie.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Adrien Brody is the star of this Wes Anderson comic tale, alongside Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman, who play three brothers that reunite for a “spiritual” trip to India after Wilson’s character attempts to take his own life. This is the brothers’ first encounter in over a year – their last meeting occurred at their father’s funeral, for whom they spent their life competing for his affection and approval. Through exquisite attention to aesthetic detail, complicated characters and intricate story lines, the filmmakers are able to explore the finer beauties of India and the complexities (and humour) of familial relationships. Brody gives a particularly strong performance in his Anderson debut as Peter, the troubled middle brother grappling with his soon-to-be role as a father. One of the most poignant scenes is when Peter has a firsthand experience with tragedy in a small Indian village, and how he reacts gives his character an added layer of complexity. It shifts his perspectives and forces him to re-evaluate himself and the life he’s been living, and the remarkable acting on Brody’s end only contributes to the depth of the film.

Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Brody assumes the role of moustache-twirling villain Dmitri in another Wes Anderson film, the award winning Grand Budapest Hotel. Inherently evil, his character kills his mother, has the protagonist Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) wrongly imprisoned for a murder, and orders a lot of people to be killed. His main motivations are to track down and steal a valuable painting that his mother left to Gustave in her will. However, his efforts are often thwarted by his lack of genius – he’s more of a bumbling villain than a manipulative mastermind. However, the quirkiness of the character masks some darker undertones – such as Dmitri’s ZZ officers being a reference to the Nazi SS officers. Brody depicts the role well, and through the quirk and humour he leaves us with subtle hints of something darker.

King Kong (2005)
Fresh off the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson tackles this blockbuster reboot which stars Adrien Brody in one of the leading roles. He assumes the role of Jack Driscoll, a struggling playwright that starts working on a script for filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black). He meets love interest Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) aboard the ship taking them to the mysterious Skull Island where they intend to start filming. However, it’s upon this island that Ann is kidnapped by Kong, who she subsequently befriends. The casting of Brody as Driscoll drew some criticism because a few critics didn’t think he was typical hero material, but that’s exactly why we like him in the role. He’s simply an unassuming writer, so it’s refreshing to have a non-traditional hero at the forefront of this epic tale.

Detachment (2011)
It’s a wonder how this film managed to stay so under the radar considering its all-star cast: Marcia Gay Harden, James Caan, Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, Bryan Cranston and of course, Adrien Brody. Brody takes the leading role as substitute teacher Henry Barthes, who safeguards himself from any emotional attachment by constantly changing schools. This changes when he lands a job at a struggling public school, where he becomes a role model to his students and forges meaningful relationships with them and his fellow teachers. The film criticises the American public school system, but an area it also delves into is the notion of human loneliness. This is where Brody is able to show his emotional range and bring a unique sense of depth to the film.

Predators (2010)
Brody’s role in this film is another example of how dedicated he is to fully getting in character. Similar to how he chose to become emaciated for his role in The Pianist, Brody put on almost 25 pounds of muscle for his role as Royce, an ex- U.S. Army Special Forces soldier turned mercenary. Royce finds himself parachuting onto a strange island with no idea how he got there, and soon discovers that he is joined not only by other trained killers, but also by creatures called “Predators” that are intent on slaughtering the humans. While this isn’t one of Brody’s stronger films, it still shows his commitment to the craft of acting and how seriously he takes each role.

Backtrack (2016)
In Backtrack, the brisk pulpy psycho-horror, Brody plays psychologist Peter Bower, whose life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that the patients he has been seeing are ghosts. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a terrifying secret which only he can put right. This spine-chilling ghost story from the acclaimed writer-director, Michael Petroni, also stars Sam Neill as Peter’s fellow shrink and mentor, but it is Brody who steals the show. His portrayal of a man whose conscience is tearing him apart from the inside is moving and horrifying in equal measure, providing a psychologically damaged protagonist against Petroni’s sustained atmosphere of ominous tension.

TOP MARTIAL ARTS FILMS

TOP MARTIAL ARTS FILMS

To star in a martial arts film takes intense training, athletic talent and charisma. Actors including Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan have mastered this art and are widely recognised as international superstars both for their martial artistry and their on-screen presence. Jackie Chan re-introduces his magnetising energy later this month as producer, choreographer and lead actor in DRAGON BLADE, which arrives on Blu-ray and DVD from 14th March. To celebrate Mr Chan’s return, let’s take a look at some of the top martial arts films of recent times...

DRAGON BLADE (2016)
The living martial arts legend that is Jackie Chan made his long awaited return to action in DRAGON BLADE this year, the riveting martial arts historic action flick, starring John Cusack and Adrien Brody. Set two thousand years ago, General Lucius’ (Cusack) legion of Roman soldiers marches East along the famous Chinese Silk Road to protect Publius, the youngest son of Consul Crassus, from his vicious brother Tiberius (Brody). After becoming lost in the desert they arrive at Wild Geese Gate, where Lucius meets Huo An (Chan), the Commander of the Silk Road Protection Squad of the Western Region. The two men - who have each been framed for treason - earn each other's respect and form an allegiance against Tiberius. To protect his country and to clear his name of treason, Huo An gathers all the allies of China to unite together and take on Tiberius in an epic battle that will be remembered forever… A soaring martial arts epic where East brutally meets West. Jackie Chan’s inimitable style is put to unforgettable effect.

KUNG FU KILLER (2015)
Donnie Yen stars as Hahou, a former martial arts instructor imprisoned after accidentally killing an opponent. When a vicious killer played by Wang Baoqiang starts targeting martial arts masters, Hahou offers to help the police capture him in return for his freedom. Donnie Yen displays his incredible ability once again in this all-action feature.

IP MAN (2008)
This 2008 semi-biographical martial arts film is loosely based on the life of Yip Man, a martial arts grandmaster, founder of the martial art Wing Chun and master of Bruce Lee. It centres on the events in Ip’s life during the Sino-Japanese war. Donnie Yen stars as Yip Man, once again bringing his martial arts expertise to the big screen. Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-hung designed the martial arts choreography for the film. Ip Man was hugely successful and soon became part of a franchise, the third instalment of which was released last year.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA (1991)
Jet Li stars in Once Upon A Time In China - a film that alerted the world to the incredible talents of the unknown, but extremely gifted martial artist and actor. It follows his character Wong Fei-Hung and sees the locals become concerned with the growing influence and presence of Westerners and foreigners in Foshan. General Liu Yong Fu of the Black Flag Army approaches Wong Fei-Hung and requests that he helps gather and train a militia to assist in defending the town. Directed by Tsui Hark, the film is a dazzling and colourful spectacle. Once Upon A Time In China was one of the first to cross over into western pop-culture in the post-Bruce Lee era, and is a firm favourite of martial arts fans around the world.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000)
This absolute classic is synonymous not only with the genre of martial arts films, but martial arts itself, winning numerous accolades over the years, including the 2000 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film tells the story of Master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) an expert swordsman and martial artist and his warrior friend Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) on their search for a stolen sword. Crouching Tiger... combines action packed kung-fu seamlessly with a truly moving love story, thanks to the genius director that is Ang Lee, who also introduced the Matrix’s choreographer, Yuen Woo-ping, to orchestrate the film’s incredibly complex fight scenes.

ENTER THE DRAGON (1973)
A blockbuster hit, Enter the Dragon is rightfully considered one of the best martial arts films of all time and was Bruce Lee’s final film before his death. The film was the first Chinese martial arts film to be produced by a Hollywood Studio (Warner Brothers) and the story follows a master martial artist who agrees to spy on a reclusive crime lord by entering a martial arts tournament as a cover. It is an exotic and extravagant spectacle and Lee is a unique and humble star who exudes emotion and unsurpassable martial arts prowess.

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (2004)
Set during the Tang dynasty in China, this film follows two police captains (Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) on their search for the leader of the counterinsurgency group, the flying Daggers. Jin (Kaneshiro) poses as an average citizen and busts Mei (Zhang Ziyi) out of jail because they believe her to be a secret member of the Daggers, but it turns out that nothing is quite what it seems. Directed by Zhang Yimou, this film contains fantastic fight choreography, dancing, traditional Chinese music, and of course: martial arts.

A TOUCH OF ZEN (1971)
A Touch of Zen made cinematic history when it became the first Chinese film to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971. It stars Feng Hsu as Ku, an artist who meets the beautiful Yang and discovers that she is being pursued by agents of an Imperial noble who have murdered her family. He becomes entangled in her struggle to survive, and many fierce battles are fought before there is any resolve. The story effortlessly combines elements of comedy and romance along with its drama and action.

KILL BILL VOL. 1 and 2 (2003 & 2004)
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Uma Thurman, Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2 follow the story of The Bride, as she seeks revenge on an assassination squad led by Bill (David Carradine) due to his assassination attempt on her and her unborn child. The film received both critical and commercial success and is considered one of Tarantino’s best films to date. Kill Bill is extremely unique in the martial arts genre as it stars an American female protagonist as opposed to the more traditional Asian male. It also co-stars Daryl Hannah and Lucy Lui proving that women can be deadly too!

HERO (2002)
Another Jet Li film, Hero is a wuxia film that is based on the story of Jing Ke’s assassination attempt on the King of Qin in 227 B.C. When the film was released it became the highest grossing motion picture in Chinese film history. The film was nominated for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Li stars as Nameless, a master swordsman and the primary conspirator in the assassination attempt. He brings his usual style and energy, while the film also stars Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung and Chen Daoming.

ONG-BAK (2003)
In Ong-Bak, Tony Jaa stars as a young martial artist living in rural Thailand who goes to the big city to retrieve the head of his village’s sacred statue: Ong-Bak. The film used no special effects or stunt doubles, but you wouldn’t believe it when you watch Jaa’s speed and execution of his martial artistry. The film was directed and written by Prachya Pinkaew and features stunt choreography by Panna Rittikrai. The fights are staged excellently as Jaa takes down every enemy that gets in his way. It was so successful that it also inspired two prequels: Ong-Bak 2 and Ong-Bak 3.

THE RAID: REDEMPTION (2012)
As a rookie member of an elite special-forces team, Rama (Iko Uwais) is instructed to hang back during a covert mission involving the extraction of a brutal crime lord from a rundown fifteen-story apartment block. But when a spotter blows their cover, boss Tama (Ray Sahetaphy) offers lifelong sanctuary to every killer, gangster, and thief in the building in exchange for their heads. Now Rama must stand in for the team's fallen leader (Joe Taslim) and use every iota of his fighting strength - winding through every floor and every room to complete the mission and escape with his life. The Raid showcases the traditional Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat, with fight choreography by Uwais and Yayan Ruhian.
