#Like - New poster and trailer - Starring Sarah Rich

Platforms: Amazon, Apple / iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, Sky Store, Virgin Media & Rakuten

On the first anniversary of her younger sister’s death Woodstock teen, Rosie (Sarah Rich - Orange is the New Black, Law & Order), discovers the mysterious man (Marc Menchaca - Ozark, The Sinner, The Outsider) who sexploited and bullied her sister to commit suicide back on-line trolling for new victims. After the authorities refuse to get involved she finds a darker side she never knew she had, as she takes justice into her own hands.

Writer/Director Sarah Pirozek says of the film "#LIKE is an elevated genre, an unapoloegtically angry 'Noir’."

Pirozek continues "The story was written as the #METOO movement began, foreshadowing the spirit calling up Rosie’s voracious chimera. She is a teen girl deep in grief. The psychological thriller nods, in turn, to Hitchcock, Fuller and Campion, echoing terrifying true stories that are all over the internet of teens exploited and bullied by predators and their peers, to harm themselves and are even driven to suicide. I began thinking about how the family left behind deals with their loss, particularly the siblings, of often female victims, and what a teen girl will do when they flame out, except this isn’t a boy with a gun, it’s a girl with a Percocet.

The story picks up a year after the suicide of Rosie’s sister as Rosie processes her stages of grief. Researching the film I discovered that the multiple platforms for teen networking are unlike anything adults today grew up with, and parents can’t keep up with the potential for predators entering their kid’s lives. In many cases the legal system can’t keep up either. There aren't the laws on the books at the state or federal level to pursue the offenders. International law enforcement also struggles with legislation that lags behind technology, creating a global problem. While in the USA the FBI reports that ‘Sextortion’ is the single-largest growing threat to children on the internet, only five states in the US have made it a felony."

#LIKE will be available to rent & buy on digital download from 1st November

REVIEW: Dune 2021 - Starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem

Review by Jon Donnis
Dune is the kind of film that you will enjoy more on a second watching. I say that because the film itself is quite disjointed, and the characters in general are quite unlikeable, and the two characters you will take an interest in, those being Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, aren't in the film that much. I don't understand why you would have such big name actors, and then not really use them.

If you are unaware of the Dune story, Timothée Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, the heir of House Atreides. A brilliant and gifted young man, destined for great things. He has to travel to a dangerous desert planet called Arrakis, also known as Dune. This planet has a substance on it called "Melange", also known as "Spice". This is a drug that can give humans longer life spans, and increase brain capacity.

The drug is collected by huge machines that scrape the planets surface, of course life isn't so easy and there are giant sand worms that are a constant threat, as well as deadly storms.

After a betrayal Paul and Lady Jessica, played by the gorgeous Rebecca Ferguson cross the desert to find the Fremen, natives of the planet Arrakis who they hope will help them.

This film is really Dune Part 1, and it only covers half of the book, so another film will be released at some point in the future. Because of this, the end of the film does suffer greatly, as it just kind of finishes, without any real climax.

The acting in the film is ok, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban is excellent, Mamoa without a beard is distracting, but as mentioned earlier, if you have no idea of the plot, have not read the book etc, it is hard to know who you are supposed to be following the fortunes of early on. You see two huge names in Mamoa and Bautista, and you would be mistaken in thinking they will be the main protaganist and antagonist. But they are not in it that much. By the time you realise that the young Paul Atreides is the main character, half the film is over. So I really do believe a second watching will improve not only your enjoyment, but also your understanding of the film.

The Good
Beautiful cinematography, everything looks and sounds wonderful, the costumes, make up, visual effects etc are all top notch as you would expect in a big budget film.

The Bad
At times the film feels a bit disjointed, and perhaps too many characters thrown in the mix early on may leave you a littleconfused. There is also a total lack of lighthearted moments, the closest you get to it is the odd line from Jason Mamoa.

Overall
A serious epic, that fans of the book and original movies should love. But for newbies to the franchise, it might not quite hit home on first viewing.

I score Dune 2021 a fair 7/10

Synopsis:
Second Sight Films welcomes The Guest – Adam Wingard’s cult favourite thriller, starring Dan Stevens in a career-defining turn – on to Limited Edition dual 4K and Blu-ray on 25 October 2021.

This riveting, slick and darkly comic action-thriller catapulted Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens from TV period drama favourite to Hollywood hardman and a force to be reckoned with, as David, a veteran who turns up  unannounced one day at the home of the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their recently deceased soldier son, who died in action. Disarming and charming, they welcome the stranger into their home and their lives, but little do they know what they’ve let themselves in for.

On the surface David is the perfect guest, friendly and helpful, with nothing too much trouble, he quickly becomes part of the family, but when people in town start dying under mysterious circumstances, teenage daughter Anna (Maika Monroe – It Follows, Independence Day: Resurgence) begins to suspect that David might not be who he seems.

Now the astounding action-packed thriller gets an incredibly inviting makeover, presented in a rigid slipcase with fantastic new artwork by Adam Stothard and containing 4K and Blu-ray formats, both with brand new colour grading supervised by director Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs Kong, You’re Next). Michael Caine will receive this year’s Raindance Icon Award

Academy Award, BAFTA and BIFA winning actor Michael Caine will receive this year’s Raindance Icon Award as part of the 29th Raindance Film Festival. It’s a double cause for celebration, as the festival is set to open 27 October with the gala UK theatrical premiere of Michael Caine’s latest film, BEST SELLERS (dir: Lina Roessler, Canada), in which he stars alongside Aubrey Plaza as a cranky retired author who reluctantly embarks on a final book tour to help out a young publisher. Best Sellers will have a Raindance gala screening at Curzon Mayfair, followed by a party at The Dorchester.

Born in Rotherhithe, south-east London in 1933, Michael Caine is a bona fide film legend. He’s one of just a handful of actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting in five consecutive decades, winning Oscars for Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2000 Birthday Honours List in recognition for his contributions to the cinema.

“Britain excels at independent film,” says Michael Caine. “The British Film Industry makes exceptional independent films, some of which I’ve have the pleasure to act in. I am honoured and proud to be a part of the British Film Industry. It’s a place where low-budget films can thrive, where all kinds of stories can be told, and where people from all backgrounds can prosper. Raindance is a vital part of this. I’m deeply honoured to receive this year’s Raindance Icon Award.”

Raindance founder Elliot Grove adds: “Michael Caine is a true icon. His incredible career has taken him from Alfie to Zulu, and from Italian jobs to Hollywood blockbusters – yet throughout it all, Michael Caine has remained true to his roots. He champions our indie film industry every time he appears in a low budget British film. Who can forget Michael Caine in Educating Rita? Little Voice? And now here he is in Best Sellers, the opening film of the 29th Raindance Film Festival, giving us an unmissable opportunity to bestow the Raindance Icon Award on one of our greatest actors. Raindance is thrilled to honour Michael’s ongoing support of British film by presenting him with this award.”

The Raindance Icon Award is a natural evolution of Raindance’s Auteur Award, whose recipients were directors Terry Gilliam, Guy Richie and Ken Loach. Renamed the Raindance Icon Award in 2019, this annual award now has a broader mandate to honour and celebrate the true icons of independent cinema: those who have made an enduring impression via the medium of film. Previous Raindance Icons are Olivia Colman, Jude Law and Sally Hawkins.

REVIEW: Halloween Kills

Review by Jon Donnis
Michael Myers is back! Sadly he is back in a paint by numbers, generic cash in of the Halloween franchise.

Nothing is added to the story of Michael. The kills are nothing special. It's not very scary.

You'll watch it once and forget about it.

Poor 5/10

In 2018, David Gordon Green's Halloween, starring icon Jamie Lee Curtis, killed at the box office, earning more than $250 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing chapter in the four-decade franchise and setting a new record for the biggest opening weekend in history for a horror film starring a woman.

And the Halloween night when Michael Myers returned isn't over yet.

Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie's basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor.

But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie's trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster.

The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael's first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all.

Following on from its limited cinema release in August, Escher: Journey Into Infinity - the first complete feature documentary about Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher’s life and work - is available to buy or rent on digital platforms in the UK and Ireland from October 18.

Told in Escher’s own words through Stephen Fry’s narration, drawing from a rich cornucopia of letters, diaries and lectures, the film offers an exploration of the fascinating man whose legacy continues to influence popular culture today.

“A fitting tribute to a multi-layered and unparalleled artist” D-MOVIES ★★★★

Filmmaker Robin Lutz says, “We get under his skin and come as close as possible to meet and understand this great graphic artist. The camera is Escher’s eye!”

“Escher wrote, "I fear that there is only one person in the world who could make a really good movie about my prints: myself.” And that is exactly what Escher is doing in this movie: he is the director, not literally but symbolically.”

The film includes interviews with Escher’s sons George and Jan, as well as musician, and collector of Escher’s work, Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). Lutz’s feature has been described by Variety as ‘an art book that comes to life’, referencing the ingenious use of animation.

British mathematician Sir Roger Penrose, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Emeritus Professor of mathematics at Oxford University, is patron of the film. DECRYPTED - New Trailer and Poster - Starring Sophia Myles, David Hoflin and Amanda Abbington

You won’t be able to keep this a secret... The all-star, outrageously dark, comedy feature DECRYPTED is getting its world premiere on 1 November 2021 courtesy of Bright Spark Productions.

Get ready to go underground and delve deep into the world of cryptocurrency and unscrupulous government agencies in this provocative film from father and son writing/directing duo Mick Sands and Tom Sands and producer Phil Harris, the team that that brought us Rupert, Rupert & Rupert and The Holly Kane Experiment.

Cop Secret - Trailer - Icelandic action-comedy

A tough super-cop, in denial about his sexuality, falls in love with his new partner while investigating a string of bank robberies where nothing seems to have been stolen.

Cop Secret stars an all Icelandic cast of Auðunn Blöndal, Egill Einarsson, Steinunn Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir as well as Björn Hlynur Haraldsson who recently starred in The Witcher.

The film's director and writer, Hannes Þór Halldórsson, is also a professional footballer, having played across a number of top flight European leagues. Halldórsson is also one of Iceland's most capped international players, having represented his country 77 times and famously saved a penalty against Lionel Messi in the FIFA 2018 World Cup. He retired from international football earlier this month.

Talking about his film, Halldórsson said; "The idea is to make an action-comedy that is not afraid of mimicking Hollywood action clichés, a film that has never been done before in Iceland. We will have gunfights, one-liner phrases and exaggerated fights.  We regularly see all these things in big action films, but Icelandic conditions do not offer in reality, but in a comedy, we are allowed to do those things. I am convinced that Cop Secret will be a movie that will be cool, original, exciting and explosive.

Our main character Bussi goes from being a cool dude who suppresses his sexuality because of his own prejudice, facing who he really is, to coming out and thus find happiness as a changed man."

Cop Secret will have its UK premiere at BFI London Film Festival on 6th October.

Breaking Glass Pictures is set to release Bad Ben: Benign, the 9th installment in the beloved found footage horror series Bad Ben, on October 26.

Bad Ben: Benign begins right where we left off, as Tom Riley wanders out of the woods behind his home on Steelmanville Road, and must climb through the window to get inside. He is baffled by objects in the house that aren’t his, things moving on their own, and soon finds himself dealing with evil forces that cause him to rely on the help of others to try and figure out once and for all how to rid the house of evil…including the most powerful demon he has ever faced!

With millions of views for films 1-8, and fans around the world, Bad Ben is the brainchild of director Nigel Bach, who single-handedly created the series in 2016.

"I pitched my ideas to dozens of producers and many were interested but it went nowhere.  For years, I tried it their way and nothing happened", said Bach. "Finally, I decided to just do it myself. Bad Ben worked because I did it my way."
