Emily Watson Top 10

Emily Watson Top 10

Emily Watson burst onto the scene with an Academy Award for Best Actress in her first major film role in Breaking The Waves. From there on, she has continued to shine in blockbuster leading roles alongside acting greats Daniel Day-Lewis, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Geoffrey Rush. This year, Watson starred in the moving war romance TESTAMENT OF YOUTH, which comes to digital download on 8th May and Blu-ray and DVD from 25th May. Here we take a look at her most impressive film roles...

TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (2015)
The indomitable Vera Brittain became the first person to document war from a woman’s point of view and, in so doing, changed the way a generation regarded itself and its actions. Her defining testimony has been transformed into a searing story of love, war and remembrance in TESTAMENT OF YOUTH. Alicia Vikander stars as Vera Brittain – irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded – who overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown to win a scholarship to Oxford. With everything to live for, she falls in love with her brother’s close friend Roland Leighton (Kit Harington) as they go to University to pursue their literary dreams. But the First World War is looming and as the boys leave for the front Vera realises she cannot sit idly by as her peers fight for their country, so volunteers as a nurse. She works tirelessly, experiencing all the griefs of war, as one by one her fiancé, her brother and their closest friends are all killed and the pillars of her world shattered. However, an indefatigable spirit, Vera endures and returns to Oxford, irrevocably changed, yet determined to find a new purpose which spurs her towards a redemptive act of remembrance. Emily Watson supports brilliantly as Vera’s mother, who shares the same grief as her family as the world around her is torn apart by war. A sweeping, epic and yet inherently personal account of the true cost of war by a star-studded British cast.

Fireflies in the Garden (2008)
To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family: Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president, son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist, daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school, and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college-decades after leaving to raise her children. But when Lisa is killed in a car-crash, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family's history and relationships come to light. Flitting between Michael’s childhood, a period where he was cruelly picked on by his neglectful father, and the present, when he is on the verge of publishing a biographical novel which will reveal all about his father’s horrible treatment of his wife, Michael and Jane (Lisa’s much younger sister). Whilst Hayden Panettiere plays young-Jane, the guardian older-sister figure to Michael, Emily Watson delivers an emphatic turn as older-Jane, who struggles to keep peace between Michael and Charles in the same way her late sister had before. Inspired by Robert Frost’s moving poem of the same name.

War Horse (2011)
Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s prizewinning novel of the same name and directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, War Horse is the story of a remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When Joey is sold by Albert’s father behind his back, Albert is heartbroken and must wait until he is old enough to enlist before he sets off to find Joey in the midst of the First World War. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse-an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. Emily Watson plays Albert’s kind-hearted mother, who hated the idea of separating Joey and Albert but also understood the family’s need for money in hard times. Another heart-warming motherly performance.

Breaking the Waves (1996)
Emily Watson gave a critically acclaimed debut film performance as Bess McNeil in Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves, for which she was earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Watson was virtually unknown until director Lars von Trier chose her to star in his controversial Breaking the Waves after Helena Bonham Carter dropped out due to the nudity involved in the role. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1970s, it is about an unusual young woman, Bess McNeill, and of the love she has for Jan, her husband, who asks her to have sex with other men when he becomes immobilized from a work accident. Bess' emotional trauma over Jan's injury turns into obsession as she prays to God for his recovery. Jan requests Bess to have sex with other men as he believes this will allow her to return to a normal life. Bess, on the other hand, sees it as an expression of her devotion to Jan that even God won't be able to ignore. Bess's resultant downward spiral leads to a finale of both tragedy and spirituality. Breaking the Waves is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive European movies of the 1990s, marking von Trier's movement toward his influential Dogma 95 School of filmmaking, which emphasises realistic situations of contemporary life, filmed without background music and with a hand-held, restlessly moving camera.

Hilary and Jackie (1998)
Watson also received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Jacqueline du Pré in the 1998 film Hilary and Jackie, the touching and incredible true story of Jacqueline and Hilary du Pré, the gifted musical sisters who grew up in England in the 1950's. Written and produced as a tribute to Jackie, and based on the memoir A Genius in the Family by Piers and Hilary du Pré, the story traces her rapid rise to international fame and the devastating consequences it had on her and those she loved. Jackie and her husband, the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, were treated as musical royalty as they travelled and performed around the world. However, the constant touring became a tremendous strain on Jackie who longed for the simpler life that her sister had built with husband Christopher Finzi, the son of composer Gerald Finzi. When Jackie arrives at her sister’s home for an unannounced visit, lonely and desperate, Hilary consents to Jackie having an affair with her (Hilary's) husband.

Appropriate Adult (2011)
Appropriate Adult is a 2011 British television film, first shown on ITV in two 90-minute parts, based on the true story of Gloucester serial killer Fred West (no relation to the actor playing him, Dominic West) and his wife Rosemary West. Appropriate Adult focuses on the events between the Wests' arrests in 1994 and Fred's suicide in Birmingham's Winson Green Prison on New Year's Day 1995, from the perspective of Janet Leach (Emily Watson), Fred West’s appropriate adult during his questioning. The senior investigator of Fred West’s case wanted to ensure that there could be no suggestion that West did not understand any part of the process, so arrangements were made so that he had an appropriate adult present at all times. Emily Watson won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for her role as the compromised Janet Leach, who draws vital information from West but must remain silent due to the confidentiality demanded of an appropriate adult.

The Boxer (1997)
The Boxer sees Daniel Day-Lewis play Danny Flynn, the 32-year-old boxer and former Provisional IRA volunteer, who returns to Belfast and tries to “go straight” following his release from prison. To get back into the boxing ring, Danny works hard to get the community-centre gym back in operation and starts training, encountering opposition from militant IRA members along the way. Watson stars as former-flame Maggie (Emily Watson), who has an unhappy marriage and now raises her son alone while her husband is in prison. Danny and Maggie grow closer, but Danny continues to be confronted with former IRA compatriots. The growing animosity leads to a bomb being set off, destroying Danny’s gym. Day-Lewis and Watson’s great chemistry in The Boxer sets a heart-warming love story adjacent to the militant friction that developed between splinter groups within the IRA in Belfast.

Gosford Park (2001)
A Julian Fellowes classic period drama- Gosford Park boasts an incredible British ensemble cast including Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Derek Jacobi, Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates, Kristin Scott Thomas, Clive Owen, Emily Watson, Charles Dance, Tom Hollander and Laurence Fox. The British mystery film explores the lives of upstairs guests and downstairs servants at a party in 1932 in a country house in England as they investigate a murder involving one of them. Emily Watson plays Elsie, the head house maid, who jumps to the defence of Sir William, breaking the class barrier and eventually revealing her affair with Sir William to everyone at the table. Comic murder mystery at its best.

The Book Thief (2013)
Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Markus Zusak and adapted by Michael Petroni, The Book Thief is about Liesel, a young girl living with her adoptive German family during the Nazi era. Taught to read by her kind-hearted foster father Hans (Geoffrey Rush), the girl begins "borrowing" books and sharing them with the Jewish refugee being sheltered by her foster parents in their home. Emily Watson plays Rosa, Liesel’s foster mother and wife of Hans in this heart-warming yet chilling tale.

Oranges and Sunshine (2011)
Set in 1980s Nottingham, Oranges and Sunshine is the true story of social worker Margaret Humphreys, who unveiled the scandalous British government child migration schemes in which thousands of children were told their parents had died and were deported to Australia. As Margaret reunited families she drew worldwide attention to the cause. Miraculously, Margaret reunited hundreds the children involved – now adults living mostly in Australia – with their parents in Britain. These children were promised Oranges and Sunshine but they got hard labour and life in institutions.

Synopsis:
Sherlock Holmes is the most filmed character of all time but it is arguably this 1959 re-telling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s classic tale The Hound of the Baskervilles, from legendary horror studio Hammer and starring genre stalwarts Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which stands as the super sleuth s finest cinematic hour.

Rising up out of the swirling mists of Dartmoor, Baskerville Hall stands tall and gloomy. Its occupant, Charles Baskerville, has been found dead in mysterious circumstances. Could Sir Charles have been the victim of the so-called Baskerville Curse , which tells of a deadly beast that stalks the surrounding countryside? Unperturbed by the legend, next-in-line Sir Henry Baskerville (a rare leading man performance from Lee) sets out to Dartmoor to assume inheritance of the family estate, under the auspices of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and right-hand man Dr. Watson (Andre Morell).

Imbued with an atmosphere as thick as fog, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a superlative gothic yarn which benefits from game performances from Cushing, Lee and Morell, as well as the expert direction of Terence Fisher, known for helming many of Hammer s most celebrated efforts including The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Devil Rides Out.

The 10 Best Adapted Memoirs

The 10 Best Adapted Memoirs

Vera Brittain’s memoir, Testament of Youth, was a bestseller on release, and was the first piece of literature to fully address the full the impact of WWI on the lives of women and the civilian population of Great Britain. To celebrate the release of the film adaptation, out on digital platforms from 8th May 2015, and on Blu-ray and DVD from 25th May 2015, courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment, we look back on some of the best memoirs to be adapted to the big screen...

Testament of Youth (2014)
Vera Brittain (Alicia Vikander), irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded, overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown to win a scholarship to Oxford. Both Vikander and Harington bring a wonderful playfulness to their initial courtship (with brilliant comedic support from Joanna Scanlan as their chaperone), and as the war separates them evolve this chemistry into something utterly moving.

Angela’s Ashes (1999)
Based on the memoirs of Irish author Frank McCourt, Angela’s Ashes was co-written and directed by Alan Parker, and starred Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle as McCourt’s parents. Recounting his childhood, the film tracks McCourt (played by Joe Breen, Ciaran Owens and Michael Legge at different points in his life) as he moves from America to Ireland due to financial difficulties, and his constant attempts to earn enough money to one day move back to the States.

A Mighty Heart (2007)
Mariane Pearl’s memoir A Mighty Heart was adapted for the screen by John Orloff, and recounted the real-life search for Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, played by Dan Futterman, who was kidnapped in Karachi by supporters of British terrorist Omar Sheikh. Daniel’s wife Mariane is played by Angelina Jolie in director Michael Winterbottom’s depiction of events which end in the most tragic way imaginable.

The Pianist (2002)
Roman Polanski’s adaptation of pianist and composer Wladyslaw Szpilman’s memoirs was met with huge critical acclaim when released in 2002, and recounts the life of Szpilman (played by an Oscar-winning Adrien Brody), as he tried to survive the destruction of a Warsaw ghetto in WWII, escaping deportation and eluding capture by the Nazis by living in the ruins. Brody famously lost 14kg for the role, and got rid of his apartment and car to try and connect to the feelings of loss he felt were required to play the role.

My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Michelle Williams stars as the late Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe in Simon Curtis’ delightful adaptation of two books by Colin Clark which describe his experiences working on the production of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, starring both Monroe and Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). The film focuses on the week Monroe spent in London escorted by Clark - here played by the wide-eyed, utterly disarming Eddie Redmayne.

An Education (2009)
British film An Education was directed by Lone Scherfig and its script from author Nick Hornby was based on a memoir by British journalist Lynn Barber. It recounts a tempestuous love affair she had in her teenage years with an older man, with the film starring Carey Mulligan in her first leading role, as the 16-year-old Jenny who becomes involved with Peter Sarsgaard’s Jewish businessman, David Goldman. There’s fantastic support from Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike as David’s fun, flighty friends who introduce Jenny to their lavish world – with Pike offering a particularly brilliant comedic turn as the ditzy Helen.

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
This Spanish biopic is based upon the memoir of 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara (played by Gael García Bernal) and recounts his 1952 expedition across South America alongside his friend Alberto Granado by motorcycle. Several years later, Ernesto would become known internationally as revolutionary Che Guevara, and in The Motorcycle Diaries he finds himself transformed by his observations on impoverished life that they encounter on their trek.

127 Hours (2010)
Aron Ralston’s much talked about memoir Between a Rock and a Hard Place tells the story of how the adventurer became trapped by a boulder in Utah in April 2003, spawning Danny Boyle’s Oscar-nominated film 127 Hours, in which James Franco plays Ralston. With his arm stuck behind a boulder for the majority of the running time, Boyle’s film does well in encapsulating Ralston’s incredible desire to live.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
This French biographical film is based on former Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby’s memoirs of the same name, telling his incredible story: after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 43, Bauby was left with locked-in syndrome, a condition which paralysed him from the neck down, and led to his right eye being sewn up. With one eye left working, the only way Bauby could communicate was by blinking. Mathieu Amalric gives a stunning, heartbreaking performance in the lead role, and director Julian Schnabel won the best Golden Globe for best director.

Persepolis (2007)
This French-American animated film is based on Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel, directed by the lady herself alongside Vincent Paronnaud. Following a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution, the film tells the factual story of Satrapi, with the title referring to the historic New Persian city of Persepolis.

Testament of Youth is available on digital platforms from 8th May 2015, and on Blu-ray and DVD from 25th May 2015, courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

80’s Fashion On Film

The bright, brilliant fashion of the 1980’s has often been captured on film- the over the top nature of the clothes lends itself beautifully to cinema, with some of the most iconic outfits of all time captured in this era. To celebrate the home entertainment release of A Most Violent Year, in which Jessica Chastain showcases an incredible array of 1980’s era Armani, we take a look at other films which demonstrate the fashion of the decade.

A Most Violent Year (2014)
The ethics of an honest man collide with the brutal violence of 1980s New York in JC Chandor’s instant classic. Set in 1981, when New York City experienced an unprecedented spike in criminal activity, small businessman Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) fights to make a living, support his wife Anna (Jessica Chastain) and protect his interests. Chastain in particular models some incredible outfits- she strongly believed that her headstrong, nouveau-riche character would only wear Armani, and wrote to the fashion house to request that they lend their costumes to the film. They were happy to oblige, and so every single outfit Anna wears is vintage Armani from 1981... including some absolutely stunning coats and sunglasses.

Submarine (2010)
Richard Ayoade’s comedy drama stars Craig Roberts as 15-year old Oliver Tate, who has two major ambitions- to lose his virginity to the beautiful Jordana (Yasmin Paige) and to save his parent’s rocky relationship (a task made all the more difficult when his mother’s ex-lover reappears in their lives). Costume designer Charlotte Walters does a brilliant job of capturing the wonderfully quirky take on the classic coming of age tale, dressing the young cast in a wonderful array of duffle coats, satchels and Wayfarers.

Adventureland (2009)
Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds star in this comedy drama set in a 1987 theme park. Eisenberg plays college student James Brennan, whose dreams of a summer in Europe are crushed after his parents suffer a major financial setback. James is forced to get a summer job to cover his upcoming college expenses at the decrepit local amusement park Adventureland, where he falls in love with his co-worker Emily Lewin (Stewart). The fashion is pretty understated throughout, but there are some fantastic high-waisted jeans and shorts on display, as well as an abundance of very impressive moustaches.

This is England (2006)
Shane Meadows’ semi-autobiographical drama about his experiences growing up in 1980’s England offers an unflinching look at the racial tensions which marred Thatcher’s Britain, with standout performances from newcomer Thomas Turgoose, Vicky McClure and Rosamund Hanson. The film brilliantly brings 1983 to life, in no small part due to Jo Thompson’s costume designs, which offer a wonderfully vivid depiction of mods, skinheads and New Romantics fashion as it took hold of the country.

The Wedding Singer (1998)
This wonderfully offbeat rom-com united Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore for the first time, recounting the lives and loves of wedding singer Robbie Hart (Sandler) in 1985. When his fiancé leaves him at the altar, he’s left heartbroken, and seeks solace in his new friendship with cocktail waitress Julia Sullivan (Barrymore), who needs help planning her own wedding to the insufferable Glen (Matthew Glave). However, the ensuing planning only brings them closer together, leading to an inevitable showdown. Mona May’s costumes are wonderfully outrageous, and include Miami Vice- esque suits, ludicrously over the top perms and an abundance of lace accessories- while Sandler rocks a particularly memorable mullet.

Heathers (1989)
Michael Lehmann’s classic black comedy took the genre of teen movies and well and truly subverted it into something much darker – it’s since become a cult classic, not least due to the incredible 80’s fashions showcased throughout the film. Plaid skirts, braces, big shoulders and velvet all take centre stage, and an additional surreal dimension is provided thanks to costume designer Rudy Dillon’s decision to assign each of the main characters a colour - power-hungry red for Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), cowardly yellow for Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk) and jealous green for Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) — with Winona Ryder’s Veronica given a foreboding wardrobe of black and dark blue.

Working Girl (1988)
Mike Nichols razor-sharp romantic comedy stars Melanie Griffiths, Sigourney Weaver and Harrison Ford and can take a huge portion of the credit for catapulting the ‘power dressing’ trend into popular culture. Outrageously back-combed hair, eyeshadows in every colour of the rainbow, and shoulder pads take centre stage, with the gradually changing wardrobe of lead Tess (Griffiths) offering a glimpse into her changing attitude and position in the workplace.

The Breakfast Club (1985) and honourable mentions for Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The undisputed king of 80s teen movies, John Hughes’ films live on not just because of the timelessness of his tales of adolescent angst, but because of the incredible fashion showcased in every single film. The Breakfast Club is the obvious choice, as each ‘high-school stereotype’ character models an iconic outfit, including Molly Ringwald’s pristine princess ensemble, rebel Judd Nelson’s leather gloves, outcast Ally Sheedy’s alternative look and Emilio Estevez’s classic letterman jacket. Special mention must be made of Hughes’ other two classics- in Pretty in Pink Molly Ringwald wears a stunning array of bright and beautiful dresses and skirts, and Andrew McCarthy showcases the oversized pastel suits and collars of the decade, whereas in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, Matthew Broderick’s sweater vests/ slacks combo and Jennifer Grey’s classic leggings, leg warmers and oversized cardigans take sartorial centre stage.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)
Madonna and Rosanna Arquette co-star in this comedy about bored housewife Roberta (Arquette), who wakes up with amnesia after an accident, and is mistaken for free-spirited New York City drifter Susan (Madonna). The film showcases several iconic 80’s looks, including an oft-cited silk bomber jacket with an embroidered back which causes all manner of mix-ups. Other classic looks featured include perms, oversized hair accessories, lace gloves and harem pants.

Flashdance (1983)
Jennifer Beals stars in this romantic drama as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steelworker by day, and an exotic dancer by night. Harbouring dreams of a ballet career, she is given financial support her boss and love interest Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri) and moral support by the kind-hearted instructor Hanna Long (Lilia Skala). The film's signature fashions include dancewear trends of oversized t-shirts, legwarmers and of course, perms, along with masculine-inspired casual wear and an infamous scene involving Alex arriving at a fancy date wearing a man’s tuxedo, minus the shirt.

A Most Violent Year comes to Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms from May 18, 2015 courtesy of Icon Film Distribution.
