The Beatles and India - Trailer for Ajoy Bose's award-winning documentary

When the world’s most famous band The Beatles made their seminal trip to India in 1968, not only did it inspire a new musical direction for the band, it paved the way for a brand new sound that still resonates across cultural and musical landscapes to this day.

Now a new, award-winning feature documentary The Beatles and India from Silva Screen Productions and Renoir Pictures explores the lasting legacy from their ground-breaking visit to Rishikesh. It sheds light on how India shaped the development of the greatest ever rock band and their pioneering role in bringing together two vastly different cultures.

The film is set for its UK digital release on 4 October, courtesy of 101 Films and will also screen at select Everyman Cinemas on 31 August as part of their Everyman Music Film Festival.

This unique historical film chronicles the enduring love affair between The Beatles and India that began more than half a century ago. The Beatles and India follows a rarely seen, fascinating time in John, Paul, George and Ringo’s career and brings it to life with archive footage, recordings and photographs, alongside eye-witness accounts, expert comments and visually stunning location shots.

In 1968 the legendary band brought their Western celebrity circus to a remote Himalayan ashram in Rishikesh in search of spiritual enlightenment. What happened next had a profound effect on the whole band… and the whole world.

Inspired by Ajoy Bose’s book, Across The Universe - The Beatles In India, British Indian music entrepreneur Reynold D’Silva has taken the amazing saga further by producing Bose’s directorial debut. Bose and cultural researcher, co-director, Pete Compton, have created an audio-visual presentation that stands apart from the many documentaries on the band, delving deep into the most crucial period of their evolution from the world’s most famous pop stars into multi-faceted pioneering musical artists.

The documentary won Best Film Audience Choice and Best Music in Tongues On Fire, the 2021 UK Asian Film Festival, where it premiered earlier this year.

An accompanying album, Songs Inspired By The Film The Beatles And India performed by Indian artists and the score album will be released on Silva Screen Records on 29 October, along with a DVD and Blu-ray release of the film from Cherry Red.

First Look image released from Save The Cinema, a Sky Original

Sky today unveiled a First Look image of Samantha Morton in the Sky Original film Save The Cinema. Inspired by the extraordinary real-life events sparked by tenacious hairdresser Liz Evans (Samantha Morton), Save The Cinema illustrates how the resolve of a small Welsh town, inspired by the magic of cinema, was able to bring Tinseltown to their doorstep.

The sleepy town of Carmarthen in Wales is not exactly the first place to spring to mind when thinking of Hollywood blockbusters. But this changed in 1993 when the town council made the unwelcome announcement that The Lyric Theatre – the town's much-loved but financially stricken cinema – would be demolished so a shopping centre could be built in its place.

It's down to Liz Evans, hairdresser and linchpin to the local community, to stand up for the ailing cinema and stop the bulldozers. As she and her friends barricade themselves in the theatre, she reaches out to postman turned town councillor Richard (Tom Felton) for help - and they come up with a grand plan.

To revitalise the cinema and stop the council taking the heart of the community away, a desperate Liz persuades Richard to write to Hollywood to ask for a helping hand. One late night phone call later and one of Hollywood's most legendary filmmakers throws The Lyric a monster-sized lifeline and a premiere Carmarthen will never forget. But will this be enough to save The Lyric?

Save The Cinema features an all-star cast including Samantha Morton (Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Adeel Akhtar (Enola Holmes), Erin Richards (Gotham), Owain Yeoman (Emergence), Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes), Colm Meaney (Gangs Of London), Rhod Gilbert (Have I Got News For You) and Keith Allen (Kingsman: The Golden Circle).  The film is directed by Sara Sugarman (Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen) and co-produced by Sky and Future Artists Entertainment in association with Head Gear Films, LipSync and Ffilm Cymru.

Save The Cinema, a Sky Original will be released on Sky Cinema and in cinemas from 14 January 2022. The film will also be available on streaming service NOW via the Sky Cinema Membership.

BBC announces feature length documentary The Last Mountain

The compelling story of 30-year-old climber Tom Ballard, who disappeared on one of the Himalayas most deadly mountains in February 2019. Tom was the son of mountaineer, Alison Hargreaves who perished on K2 in 1995. Mother and son, two of the greatest climbers of all time, died at almost the same age, in the same mountain range, both doing what they loved best.

The 105 minute feature length film is directed by Emmy award winning filmmaker, Chris Terrill (Alison's Last Mountain) and produced by award winning producer Julia Nottingham (Skate Kitchen), and BAFTA award winning documentary filmmaker Olivia Lichtenstein (Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don't Know Me).

This is the compelling story of 30-yr-old climber Tom Ballard, who disappeared on one of the Himalayas most deadly mountains in February 2019. Tom was the son of mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who perished on K2 in 1995. Mother and son, two of the greatest climbers of all time, died at almost the same age, in the same mountain range, both doing what they loved best. They now lie forever encased in the ice of the high Himalayas. Left behind to cope with the enduring tragedy are Tom's sister, Kate and their father, Jim.

In 1995, Jim Ballard took his children, Tom, 6 and Kate, 4 on an expedition to K2's basecamp to say farewell to their mother, the result was a BBC film, Alison's Last Mountain. Now, The Last Mountain follows Kate Ballard on a parallel trip to say goodbye to her brother on Nanga Parbat. Using archive footage from 1995 and Tom's own extraordinary footage taken up until the days before his death, the film explores what made Tom continue his ascent with Italian climber, Daniele Nardi after the other two members of the expedition turned back. Tom had always followed his credo to 'listen' to the mountain and climb as though he were a part of it, a moving piece of rock or ice.

Combining 25 years of intimate, unseen family archive with footage of the family that director, Chris Terrill, has shot in the years since Alison's passing, the documentary tells the unforgettable story of a family who lived and were prepared to die for the love of scaling the icy heights of the world's highest peaks, and explores what it is that drives people to pit themselves against nature at its most ferocious and unforgiving.

Patrick Holland, Director of Factual, Arts and Classical Music, says: "This is a deeply personal, deeply moving film about an extraordinary family and their passion to live life at the extremes. We are hugely privileged to be allowed on this journey, a pilgrimage into the mountains, following Kate Ballard as she says goodbye to her brother, Tom.  I'd like to thank Kate and Jim for sharing their story and Chris Terrill for making this elegiac, awe-inspiring and haunting film."

Getting Away With Murder(s) - UK Theatrical Release from October 1st

Almost 1 million people in 22 countries carried out the unprovoked murder of 11 million innocent men, women and children.

99% of those responsible were never prosecuted; most were never even questioned.

The Allies knew what their crime was.

The Allies knew where a great many of the murderers could be found - Germany, Austria, Italy, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and numerous countries in South America.

The Allies had an endless wealth of evidence to present to the courts.

The Allies unanimously agreed to prosecute those responsible when they drew up The London Agreement in August 1945.

But, after the late 1940s, these very same Allies did almost nothing.

Why?

Director David Wilkinson’s sole motivation for making GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER(S) was to find out precisely why so many were actively permitted to get away with their crime(s) – the crime of mass murder on an industrial scale.

GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER(S) will be in UK cinemas from 1st October.

Sky to release Fran Kranz’s critically acclaimed film debut Mass, a Sky Original

Sky today announces its release of Sky Original film Mass, starring Emmy Award winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Martha Plimpton (The Goonies) and Tony Award winner Reed Birney (House of Cards). Mass, a Sky Original is produced by Fran Kranz (Dollhouse, Cabin in the Woods) in his first writer-director debut and will release in cinemas and on Sky Cinema in 2022 across the UK & Ireland.

Fran Kranz, writer, director and producer of Mass comments: "I could not be more excited or proud to be working with Sky on the release of Mass in the UK and Ireland. While it's a small and intimate film it grapples with large and urgent themes. The leading actors give four unforgettable performances of such emotional scale, and it all comes together in one very formidable experience. More than anything, I am honoured to share their work with the world."

Set predominantly on one set, this visually unique film looks at two sets of parents (Birney and Dowd, Isaacs and Plimpton), who years after an unspeakable tragedy tore their lives apart, agree to talk privately in an attempt to move forward. In Fran Kranz's writing and directing debut, he thoughtfully examines their journey of grief, anger, and acceptance by coming face-to-face with the ones who have been left behind.

Julia Stuart, Director of Original Films at Sky comments: "It is a great privilege for us to bring Kranz's writer-director debut Mass to a wider audience, as it joins our Sky Original film line-up for 2022. Ann Dowd, Jason Isaacs, Martha Plimpton and Reed Birney's stellar performances of Kranz's powerful script creates a rare and powerful film and I can't wait to share it with our customers."

Mass, a Sky Original is produced by Kranz, Casey Wilder Mott, JP Ouellette and Dylan Matlock. The film will be available on Sky Cinema and streaming service NOW via the Sky Cinema Membership.
