The Ascension Of Ava Delaine - Trailer and Release Details

Shot entirely on drone. In a single-take. With just one actress. Spanning five vertical locations. The Ascension of Ava Delaine is a technical pioneer in filmmaking from director and horror icon Tonya Kay (D-RAILED, EVIL BONG 777, GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR), and is now available on Amazon Prime through Hewes Pictures.

This 5:07 min experimental short film has been called a "Ridiculously Difficult Single-Take Filming By Drone” by SolidSmack tech journal. The Ascension of Ava Delaine also received the honor of Best Mobile Film at the AT&T SHAPE Film Awards - a conference exploring the convergence of technology and entertainment. Director, Tonya Kay, accepted the award which included mentorship with Cathy Yan (director; Birds of Prey), a grand ceremony at Warner Bros Studios and a bountiful cash prize.

Director, Tonya Kay, whom has also been cited as one of StudioDaily’s Exceptional Women in Production and Festigious’s 30 Female Directors to Follow, and who’s work includes tv segment direction for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! (The CW), also executive produced and acted in the film. Kay says, “Everyone has seen single-takes performed horizontally - even on a drone. I wanted to challenge the technology and give viewers something they’ve truly never witnessed before: a story-based single-take that travels vertically - voyeuristically meeting our actress on a new floor, in new wardrobe, in a new decade of her life, with new emotions in real time.”

On being the actress tasked with four quick-changes while traveling up stairs during the single-take, Kay says, "What you see from the drone front is the movie. What was happening behind those walls was a whirlwind of rambunctious nudity and focused determination.”

The story of The Ascension of Ava Delaine, written by Shaula Evans, is a female empowerment fantasy, non-verbally showing a woman becoming more confident, more sexual and more valuable as she ages. A story not traditionally told in mainstream media.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am - Official Trailer and Release Information

Directed by: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders

The critically acclaimed Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature.

Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

In addition to Ms. Morrison, the film features interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film. Using Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant portrait-style interviews, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas, and evocative works by other contemporary African-American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall.

Based on the book by Jacqueline Wilson and starring Russell Brand, Matthew Goode, Paula Patton and the voice of Sir Michael Caine

Sky today announced their forthcoming original title FOUR KIDS AND IT will be available to audiences on Sky Cinema on 3 April, a week earlier than previously announced.

Due to the recent closure of cinemas the film will no longer receive a simultaneous theatrical release as originally planned, but families are still able to enjoy it in the comfort of their homes.

Set on the beautiful Cornish coast, FOUR KIDS AND IT is a fun-filled family adventure based on Jacqueline Wilson’s hugely popular children’s book, Four Children and It, in which four kids embark on the ultimate journey to discover if a magical creature can really make all their wishes come true.

New couple Alice (Patton) and David (Goode) take their less than enthusiastic children on a family holiday to a Cornish cottage to meet each other for the first time.  The holiday takes an unexpected turn when, on the local beach, the kids discover a magical and very grumpy Psammead (Caine), a creature with the power to grant magical wishes.  Unfortunately, they also run into local aristocratic oddball Tristan (Brand), who wants to capture the Psammead for his own gain.  The ensuing adventure brings the new siblings together and helps them to accept their parents’ newfound happiness.

Interview with Tommy Baker

Available on DVD and Digital today, FACING EAST is the story of a cemetery in Kentucky that re-uses graves – over and over and over. It’s a confronting and powerful doc. We spoke to director Tommy Baker about it.

Tell us about the motivation to make a film based on this, well, crooked cemetery?

I just kind of fell into this documentary really organically. A friend of mine recommended me to the Friends of Eastern Cemetery group, I was just starting off as a film maker and they needed someone to come and help them shoot some footage they could use to raise awareness of what they were doing. I believe they were in their first year and the cemetery was still in really bad shape. After leaving the first day that I came down there with my camera, I knew that there was a much, much bigger story there and I had to find out more. I didn't know right off that it would be a feature length film but the more I kept going down there, talking to people, researching the cemetery, the crazier and crazier the story kept getting. Several times we thought we had a rough cut of the finished movie and then someone would contact us or some new piece of information would come to light. None of us expected the story to be as big, or as dark as it ultimately turned out to be.

How long ago did you begin plotting out the movie?

The first day I went down with my camera would have been August of 2013. Some of the footage from that summer actually made the final cut of the film. I really got serious about finishing the film sometime in 2015. It was a very long journey.

And any hurdles to overcome before it was a ‘go’?

We had so many hurdles. We tried for a quite a while to negotiate with some local news stations who had covered various aspects of the story so we could use footage from those segments but licensing fees were exorbitant and we had no budget. We raised a little money crowdfunding after that in hopes to get at least a minute or two of news footage but we couldn't raise enough. That process was over more than a year which was frustrating to have no positive results afterwards. That's just one example.

Who was the first main interviewee to agree to get involved? Did the rest sort of fall in after he/she committed?

Once I had been down to the cemetery a few times I was introduced to Andy Harpole who founded the Friends of Eastern Cemetery group I mentioned earlier. We talked a few times and he ultimately agreed to help with the project. He wasn't actually my first interview but he knew who to talk to and opened a lot of doors that I would've never found on my own. Over the course of the project I interviewed him a number of times.

Is this a place you yourself were familiar with before the movie?

I wasn't really familiar with the cemetery beforehand, although as I later found out I had lots of connections to it, friends who were at least vaguely aware of what had happened there, and even one friend who, unbeknownst to me, had made a short documentary in high school around 2004 about the subject.

I imagine your knowledge of the place greatly increased as the film kicked in?

Over the course of researching this documentary I kind of became an expert on this little 30 acre piece of land. I still go down there often. I feel a strong connection with the cemetery that I'm not sure that I can explain. It's never been scary to me though. I might've gotten creeped out a couple times briefly but I always felt strangely welcome there.

For you, what’s the goal with the film?

Most importantly I hope the film can serve the original purpose of why I came down there the first time. To get the word out about The Friends of Eastern Cemetery Non -profit group so they can get the help they so desperately need. I also hope that the story will find other people like Andy Harpole in other cities and give them a little motivation to go and help preserve and upkeep other historical and abandoned cemeteries. This isn't the only place this has happened. I urge anyone who wants to form a similar group to contact the friends of Eastern Cemetery and get more information, and inspiration on how to go about doing that.

Winner of over 24 Film Awards, Honey Lauren’s ode to the WIVES OF THE SKIES soars to become the must-watch short of 2020!

Winner of 24 awards, including Best Film at the New York Cinematography Awards and Best Original Screenplay at the Indie X Film Festival, Wives of The Skies is a romantic dramedy, set in 1965, starring two stewardesses, Fran and Marcy from Fine Air, a well-appointed airline. One evening after work, at their stewardess’ hotel, they befriend Derrick, a British photojournalist who wants to interview them as “subjects” for his “documentary film”.

As Fran and Marcy are interviewed, they are revealed as very different than Derrick hoped for or could possibly have expected…  As they get to know each other, Wives Of The Skies makes a contemporary socio-cultural statement regarding the meme of “the good girl, drawn bad”.  Wives of The Skies clarifies the impact of the overarching “men’s gaze” which objectifies women as carnal sex objects men seek, while they look for love…  along the way, addressing the primitive issue of Trust vs. Mistrust, Wives of The Skies displays the Japanese art of Kinbaku.

Currently a soaring success on the festival circuit, the short film is directed by Honey Lauren and features a superlative cast including Rachel Alig, Maddison Bullock, Sebastian Fernandez,  Drew Brandon Jones and Embry Rose.

Director Honey Lauren : When someone I know sent me a link to vintage 1960’s Stewardess outfits for sale on EBAY, I was blown away at not only the popularity and high prices, but that these outfits are sold, collected and bid on, by what looked like mostly men. I recognized that these uniforms have become a fetish… for me, at the very least unexpected. Curious, I researched the history of stewardesses during this particular era.

The stewardesses were sporting uniforms by top fashion designers like Pucci, Mary Wells and Yves Saint Laurent. The fabrics, which “hugged” as they stretched, were considered revolutionary for their ability to display the stewardesses. During the flights, the layers of clothing came off at different altitudes. Dramatic designs were all the rage, with geometric patterns and stripes; bold pinks and lavenders topped off with tangerine go-go boots!

As I read the famous COFFEE, TEA OR ME, the tell all book by two “randy Stewardesses”, something about these “sexy Stewardesses”, seemed pushed and insincere. It seemed a marketing ploy by the airlines to sell tickets. Ok. We’ve seen this before. Sex sells. These ladies, and only ladies, were dressed, weighed, packaged and displayed. One airline even advertised the suggestive “Does your wife know you’re flying with us?” Another display of the pattern of woman being sexualized and sold. Only after I wrote WIVES OF THE SKIES, did I find out that COFFEE, TEA OR ME was indeed a hoax, written by a man hired by the airline industry.

I have long recognized that where there is a pattern, there is a story. WIVES OF THE SKIES, is a story. And a question… ‘Sex sells, but at what cost?’

WIVES OF THE SKIES next screens at the Picture's Up Film Festival, West Hollywood, April 3-5.
