Pray Away | Official Trailer | Netflix

In the 1970s, five men struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church started a Bible study to help each other leave the “homosexual lifestyle.” They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalized as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world.

But leaders struggled with a secret: their own “same-sex attractions” never went away. After years as superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ, disavowing the very movement they helped start. Focusing on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, PRAY AWAY chronicles the “ex gay” movement’s rise to power, its unscientific  influence, and its legacy of profound harm.

From executive producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, and director Kristine Stolakis, watch Pray Away on August 3, only on Netflix:

REVIEW: The Tomorrow War - Starring Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons

Review by BeenToTheMovies.com Staff

The Tomorrow War is an action adventure sci-fi film by Chris McKay, starring the always likeable Chris Pratt in the lead role.

Life is seemingly normal for Iraq vet, high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), when suddenly during an international "soccer" game, a portal opens up and armed time travelers from the year 2051 appear and they have an urgent message.

30 Years in the future the human race is on the verge of extinction, an alien species is decimating the human population, and they need help, help by the way of people to travel to the future and fight.

Dan Forester ends up being recruited and he travels to the future whereby he meets up with scientist Col. Muri Forester (Yvonne Strahovski), you might want to make a note of her name, that is all I will say for now.

The always excellent J.K. Simmons stars as Dan Forester's estranged father, who I wish so much, had a bigger role in the film.

I don't want to spoil the film too much so I am being careful with what I say, especially as I really enjoyed the film and do recommend people watch it.

The Good

If you like big action and big sci fi, then this is the film for you. Yes the story is a bit cliché at times, but does that really matter when you have likeable characters? The visual effects are excellent, bar one scene right near the end where the Dan Forrester character suddenly seems too big in comparison to the alien, but other than that everything looks really good. There is some stand out action scenes, lots of guns, fighting aliens, and even some nice character interaction with the odd one liner thrown in for good measure.

The Bad

J.K. Simmons is so underused in this film, the scenes he is in really stand out, and although he gets some great lines, I do think they should have shot more scenes with him in. That really is my only complaint about the film.

Overall

At 2 hours and 9 minutes, the film seems a bit long, and in some ways the final "act" almost feels like it could have been a sequel. There was a lot more they could have done when they return to present time, and the final battle seems a bit rushed.

With all that said, I really enjoyed the film, and when my complaints boil down to wanting more J.K. Simmons and the final act that could have been a sequel, then you know you have a good film

I score The Tomorrow War a very strong 8/10

I thoroughly enjoyed it.
