Loopers: The Caddie’s Long Walk, in Cinemas from 23rd July

Narrated by Bill Murray
In cinemas for a limited time only from 23rd July 2019

11th July, 2019, London, UK: CinEvents, in partnership with Gravitas Ventures, drive Loopers: The Caddie’s Long Walk, narrated by Bill Murray, into cinemas across the UK and Ireland for a limited time only from July 23rd, just days after the 148th Open at Royal Portrush.

Loopers: The Caddies’s Long Walk is the most thorough feature-length film documentary ever developed on golf’s historic caddie profession and explores the incredible personal bond that a golfer and a caddie develop through hours of time together. The film is narrated by actor and the most famous Caddie Hall of Fame member,  Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Lost in Translation, Caddyshack).

It is often said that a good caddie does three things: show up, keep up and shut up. But a great caddie wears many hats. They’re the player’s psychologist, mother/father figure, technical advisor and confidante. The film unveils the working dynamic between famous partnerships like the heartfelt story of Tom Watson’s and caddie Bruce Edwards. Conversely, it delves into the making of a caddie’s career with stories like Greg Puga — a young Bel Air Caddie from East Los Angeles who fought his way to Augusta to play in the Masters as a Mid-Amateur Champ. Another is the compelling legacy of caddie master Mike Kiely, who has been the caddie organizer at historic Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland for a half-century and guided many caddies toward successful lives.

Whether familiar or new, these are stories that will make you re-think the way you look at Golf, and especially the job of the Caddie.

Loopers: The Caddie's Long Walk is a visual tour de force, shot on the iconic courses of Pebble Beach, Augusta National, St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Prestwick, Ballybunion, and Lahinch. Crafted in the spirit of documentaries like “20 feet from Stardom”, “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” and “Step into Liquid”, the film is a must-watch document of the game of golf as you’ve never seen it before."

The film includes interviews with World Golf Hall of Famers Sir Nick Faldo, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino, Curtis Strange and former Masters Tournament and U.S. Open champion Fuzzy Zoeller. Professional caddies who participated include Steve Williams (Tiger Woods’ former caddie), Carl Jackson (Crenshaw), Fanny Sunesson (Faldo), Pete Bender (Greg Norman and others), Michael Greller (Jordan Spieth) and Jariah “Jerry” Beard (Zoeller at the 1979 Masters). Long-time golf journalists Rick Reilly, Michael Collins and Ward Clayton are also interviewed.

“Loopers” is directed by Southern California filmmaker Jason Baffa, who has directed successful independent films on the global surfing sub-culture, including “Bella Vita,” “One California Day” and “Singlefin: Yellow.” Baffa’s first film on golf harkens back to his days growing up when he played golf with his father and uncle.

Loopers: The Caddie's Long Walk will be shown in over 70 cinemas across the UK and Ireland for a limited time only. Tickets can be found at www.mycineplace.com/loopers

COMPETITION: Win Romance on Blu-ray

Romance is out on Blu-ray on July 15th.

And to celebrate we have a great competition for you and 3 copies to give away.

Synopsis
Controversial. Groundbreaking. Daring. Extraordinary. Explicit. Shocking. Romance, directed by Catherine Breillat, is all this and more. And now one of the most provocative films of modern cinema is coming to UK Blu-ray for the first time in a newly restored version, courtesy of Second Sight.

A teacher, Marie (Caroline Ducey) is happy living with her boyfriend, but their relationship lacks intimacy and, desperate for physical affection, she sets off to find it elsewhere, in a series of ever-more extreme encounters with strangers...

The film, originally released in 1999, drew as many shocked gasps from critics as it did plaudits when it first opened. It also troubled censors in the UK and around the world as it blurred the lines between art and pornography with its searingly honest depiction of a woman embarking on an odyssey of increasingly explicit sexual experiences.

Described by Empire as a ‘daring study of sex and sensibility’ it arrives on Blu-ray with a brand-new scan, complete with a host of special features on 15 July 2019.

OLDBOY - In Cinemas 2nd August - **UK TRAILER**

Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, Oldboy is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre. Directed with immense flair by Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden) as the second instalment of his Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy blazed a trail at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival where it was lauded by the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino.

The film went on to become a huge international smash, blowing audiences minds with its concoction of filmmaking virtuosity, ingenious plotting, violence and pathos. Packed with shocking twists and eye-popping set pieces - including the much-imitated hammer attack sequence, and a sushi meal you might not want to sample - and anchored by an astonishing lead performance by Choi Min-sik, Oldboy really is a stunning and unmissable (and endlessly rewatchable) cinematic masterpiece.

Cast:
Choi Min-sik (I saw the Devil, Lucy)
Kang Hye-jung (Lady Vengeance)
Yu Ji-tae (The House That Jack Built)

Director:
Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden, Lady Vengeance)

Synopsis
Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration.

Eventually released, he learns of his wife’s murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors...

Australia's Blumhouse, Continuance Pictures, announces scripts selected for film consideration

Continuance Pictures has selected the Top 25 script submissions for the first Continue Short Film Initiative, which aims to establish a platform for Australian talent and provide opportunities for emerging filmmakers everywhere.  Unexpectedly, the Continue initiative proved popular internationally, with filmmakers from all corners of the globe submitting their film and television scripts. A third of submissions came from female screenwriters, and of the top 25 finalists, over a third were written by women.

A number of the scripts were genre-skewed, including Carn-Evil by Jason Siner and Red Right Hand by Nick Pollack . TV and film star Cleo Massey had her script Liar, Liar selected as a finalist.

“Having filmmakers from a variety of backgrounds provides our development department with engaging stories and endless entertainment,” Tristan Barr says. “Prestige horrors, fourth-wall-breaking comedies and touching dramas were the most popular genres tendered.”

While submissions were being reviewed by the development team, the producers started making connections in the US with the help of Screen Queensland, Film Victoria, and Australians in Film. The team met with major writing talent, production houses, and formed larger international connections.

The Continuance team also attended the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival, and Hollyweb Festival where Continuance’s web series Cursed screened in the 2019 Official Selection. Hollyweb provides the latest and greatest web series, and their creators, valuable exposure, networking opportunities and industry education sessions.

“Our goal is to champion quality content from emerging writers and directors,” David Gim says. “We believe we can bring fresh local and international talent to these production houses, thanks to the Continue Short Film Initiative.”

Additionally, Continuance Pictures partnered with Revelation Film Festival earlier this year to provide the latest iteration of the Continue Short Film Initiative. Successful applicants will be passed onto Continuance Pictures for first-look feature production with local, US and Asian distributors. Revelation Film Festival is held in Perth between the 4th and 17th of July.

“Our partnership with Revelation is the next exciting step in securing partnerships with future Australian filmmakers, and bringing their work into the consciousness of a wider audience,” David Gim says.

Competition - Win Blue Directed by Karina Holden on DVD

Blue (The tide has come for Change) is out now on Digital and released on DVD on July 1st.

And to celebrate we have a great competition for you and 2 copies on DVD to give away.

Synopsis
Half of all marine life has been lost in the last 40 years. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. A powerful feature documentary Blue, from renowned film-maker Karina Holden (Magical Land Of Oz), takes us on a provocative journey into the ocean realm, to witness a critical moment in time…when the marine world is on a precipice.

Blue presents a fascinating and important story that needs to be told. We journey across the seas and into the world of passionate advocates for ocean preservation, where the story of our changing oceans is unfolding.

Our inspirational guides, Lucas Handley, Madison Stewart, Philip Mango, Dr Jennifer Lavers, Tim Silverwood, Mark Dia and Valerie Taylor, have one common aim, to be guardians of the ocean and inspire others to join their work to protect the world we live in. They are defending habitats, campaigning for smarter fishing, combating marine pollution and fighting for the protection of keystone species.

The industrialisation that has occurred in the oceans over the last century mirrors the events that triggered mass extinctions on land. Industrial scale fishing, habitat destruction, species loss and pollution have placed the ocean in peril. The very nature of the sea is being irretrievably altered. The ocean can no longer be thought of as a place of limitless resources, a dumping ground, immune to change or decline, we have learnt a lot on about how the ocean operates, but need to act on that knowledge before it’s too late.

Blue comes at a time when we are making critical decisions that will decide the legacy we leave for generations to come and shows us there is a way forward and the time to act is now.

David is a complete pariah in school and in the street but he is destined to be a comic and entertainer. Through his childhood we follow him as he loses his sister Gabriella, to a tragic death, and then in his teens he falls in love with a complicated and troubled girl named Mariah. Interview with Shelagh McLeod director of ASTRONAUT

Ahead of The Edinburgh Film Festival’s World Premiere screening of ASTRONAUT, a moving drama about a retired man’s desire to fly to space, debut director Shelagh McLeod describes how the film achieved lift-off, working with Richard Dreyfuss and her love for sci-fi and horror.

ASTRONAUT will be screened on Saturday 22 June 18:00 at Filmhouse 1 and on Monday 24 June 18:05 at VUE Omni 12.

Q: You’ve just completed your first feature film as writer/director - ASTONAUT, which stars Richard Dreyfuss. What inspired you to create it and how did you manage to get the project off the ground?

I got the idea for the film when my mum was in a nursing home and I used? to visit her almost every day. In the nursing home gardens there was an old man in a wheelchair who would sit all day - rain or sunshine - staring up at the sky. The nurse would literally have to drag him in as night fell. One day I sat next to him and asked; “What is it that you’re looking for up there…?” He said; “ Another go...” That was over eight years ago and when my mother died a few weeks later – I started developing the idea of an old man who wanted another go at life and a final chance to achieve his dreams. And what bigger dream to have than to win a ticket to space! Can you imagine?

It took a long time to the project get off the ground. At one point we nearly gave up - but of course we couldn’t.  Producer Jessica Adams and I travelled around the world pitching the project - but the real turning point was making our short film – ‘The Great Escape’ - and then winning the JETS Berlin. My agent, Jennifer Goldhar, sent the script to Richard’s agent and we got just one line back: “Cute script. I’ll send it to Richard...” And that was the start.

Q: You draw out excellent performances from all your cast, but Dreyfus is particularly commanding. How did you find the process of working together?

Richard is a brilliant actor, so it was pretty easy. He is fun, full of mischief and has the brain the size of a planet. He would come up with fantastic suggestions and more often than not, I’d say - “Yeah – Great.”  He is such an experienced actor, has been on a million sets working with the top directors in the world and I was aware of this. So if Richard was going to make a suggestion, I was going to listen, and if he suggested a line change... Well, they say ‘steal from the best…’

Q: The journey Angus (Richard Dreyfus) takes to finally achieve his dream of going into space has a fantasy adventure feel to it.  Is this something you feel is important for the audience to embrace?

Yes. The story is a bit of a fairy tale. I think science fiction extrapolates from the truth.  In order to tell our story we had to condense a lot as we knew that our budget would restrict our wilder ideas.  If you are a literal thinker - it might be hard to watch a film with fantastical elements.  You might say: ‘ Hey, wait a minute…” But I promise you - we did years of research (with our fantastic science adviser ED Wilmot) and the core of the story is based on fact. But the fantasy adventure element was something that I didn’t want to lose as we moved through draft after draft. This is meant to be an uplifting tale of second chances. A story of (about?) flight and escape from ill health and advancing years. It's about the chance to achieve your dreams no matter how big. And if you can’t do that in a story, or in a movie - or even in real life - well how depressing a world would that be?

Q: Although the film centres on one man’s desire to go into space, the impact it has on all those around him is life-changing. What are your own feelings about space travel and how much of that informed the story?

If I had the chance to go to space I would go like a shot. To see Earth from space, to look into the vastness of the universe would be the absolute dream. A life changing experience. We are, after all, just a rock spinning around the sun and I don’t have a religion.  I love science and have a spiritual sense that we are not alone - and I don’t think this is just wishful thinking on my part. The possibility that there is life out there, even when put to the top scientists, is very probable. We must go out there, search and hopefully find another habitable planet.

Q: Let’s rewind. Although you were born in Vancouver, you relocated to England when you were six years old and have since worked in Canada and the US. How you view your national identity?

It’s a good question. I have always felt quite split; one foot in North America and the other here in the UK. I have memories as a child of Vancouver, and later on when we moved up to a small town called Cornwall near Ottawa. And they were happy memories. We had little money and the six of us lived in a two-bedroom flat. Once abiding image is of my mum putting out the washing to dry at night and more often than not – frozen shirts, socks and pants would be stuck to the washing line the next day.

Coming to England at about five and half years old was a culture shock. The Canadians are very friendly and gentler in a funny way. Going to an English school with a Canadian accent was a challenging time so I dropped the accent after a few days! I live in England now and love it, but a lot of me still is in Canada and when I go back it feels like home.

Q: Your acting break was starring in Dennis Potter's, Prix Italia winner, CREAM IN MY COFFEE. What do to recall most vividly about that experience?

It was a fantastic experience. Meeting Potter was quite daunting but he was a lovely man. I also met a lifelong friend, Peter Chelsom, who played my future husband in the film, and of course Peggy Ashcroft and Lionel Jeffries were completely brilliant. Gavin Millar is still one of the best directors I have ever worked with. And Martin Shaw and I worked together several times after – he was so good in the film and a lovely actor to work with. I still feel lucky I got that job

Q: You built quite a television career in the UK playing such characters as Dr Kate Webster in PEAK PRACTICE, Jenny Clayton in DOCTORS and Matron Judith Marchant on HOLBY CITY. Do you have any plans to return to our TV screens?

Absolutely. I love working in TV. ‘Peak Practice’ was such a special show to work on – Simon Shepherd (my screen husband) and I used to live two streets away from each other in Shepherds Bush. He was great fun, hugely supportive and generous of any actor that joined the show – and a fantastic actor. I miss the laughs too much to not do any more TV in the future.

Q:  After completing a three-year BA film and screenwriting course you made two award-winning short films. Was this when you decided to embark on a filmmaker’s career?

I made a test commercial when I was in my early thirties and loved the process of writing, then directing and seeing the story I had in my head come to life. I have been an actor for a very long time – my first role was in Isadora Duncan staring Vanessa Redgrave. I was one of the very young kids running down the hill. I remember watching Vanessa looking so beautiful and being so good and thinking – “Hmmm… that looks like fun..” I really love the post production process as well. I could sit in there for months – well you do – but you get the luxury of not being so rushed. Film making is all about collaboration. It has to be. On ‘Astronaut; every one of the crew and cast all had great ideas and often far better than I had at the time.

Q: So, back to ASTRONAUT. You shot the film in Canada. Why?

I had started shopping the film around in England but learnt early on not to mention the space rocket in the pitch – the finance guys I would pitch to would almost pass out when I did: “An unknown director, and a rocket..! Goodbye!” Then I met Jessica

Adams who is a young, very clever producer and then we met Dan Lyon at Telefilm who was so supportive of the project, and we said: “Let’s make the film in Canada.”  There is a vast pool of exceptional talent there. It was a very easy decision.

Q: The film will receive its World Premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year. Excited?

Very. We were all so thrilled and grateful to be selected for EIFF. It’s such a fantastic film festival and has great prestige all over the world. The moment we heard we wanted to tell everybody who had worked so hard on the film. It’s an honour.

Q: NEXUS, your second screenplay, has been shortlisted by Sundance Screenwriter's lab and chosen for the prestigious Writer's Lab 2018, supported by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman. Where are you with that and tell us a bit about the film?

After the Writers Lab, which was a great experience, I’ve spent the last few months working intensively on the script. I have just attached a great producer from the UK and hope to do a co-pro with Canada.  Fingers crossed this film won’t take seven years to make. It’s a bigger story than ‘Astronaut’ in terms of budget and it’s a story that is close to my heart – and again, it has a big space theme to it. I love space.

Q: You’ve recently been named one of Canada's '6 Directors to Watch' by The Hollywood Reporter. Do you feel pressure to succeed?

Of course. Canada has got the most brilliant directors. My newest favourite is Danishka Esterhazy. Have you seen Level 16? I was on the edge of my seat. So well directed and made.  But just like being an actor – its only by watching, working and learning from the greats that you learn to develop your own voice.

Q: You’re a big fan of the Sci-Fi and Horror genres. Do you plan to make a horror film in the near future?

I have a story I wrote at Uni in 2015. It’s a dystopian horror – a spaceman who was lost in space is returned to Earth five hundred years after he left. The world is not as he knew it and he tries to escape, with horrifying consequences. The story has an undercurrent of what’s bubbling up now across the West.

Q: There’s a current resurgence of genre filmmakers coming out of Canada. Is there anyone you particularly admire and why?

I love Atom Egoyon. Sarah Polley and of course Danishka. All amazing film directors – Sarah for the heart in her films – especially Away From Her, Danishka for the spell binding tension she built in Level 16 – and the political message beneath. Atom because he is just a brilliant film maker but there are so many more.

Q: Finally, what does the future hold for you?

I mentioned earlier – a return to acting is on the cards, taking on a lead role in the film ISLAND WEST, a sci-fi thriller, currently in pre-production, which I’ll also co

produce. And I’ll be re-united with Simon Shepherd, my screen husband in ‘Peak Practice’. I’m looking forward to the shoot!

ASTRONAUT will be screened on Saturday 22 June 18:00 at Filmhouse 1 and on Monday 24 June 18:05 at VUE Omni 12.

MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN from Alexandre O. Philippe - arrives in UK cinemas 30th August

The iconic scenes and sequences from seminal sci-fi horror ALIEN are firmly embedded in film history and popular culture: the creepy eggs and HR Giger designed spacecraft on a long dead planet; the 2 pivotal facehugger attaching itself to one of the crew of the Nostromo; the shocking chest-bursting sequence and much, much more…

But while we may all now know that "in space, no-one can hear you scream", how did Ridley Scott and the creative team come up with the ideas for a blockbuster that changed both the horror and sci-fi genres and truly terrified audiences around the world?

As we approach the 40th Anniversary of the game-changing film a fascinating feature documentary MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN, from writer/director Alexandre O. Philippe (78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene), uncovers the origin story behind Scott’s cinematic masterpiece, which arrives in cinemas on 30 August 2019 followed by DVD and on demand on 2 September from Dogwoof.

A contemplation on the symbiotic collaborative process of moviemaking, the power of myth, and the collective unconscious, MEMORY unearths the largely untold beginnings of a movie-masterwork rooted in Greek and Egyptian mythology, underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon, and the dark visions of Dan O’Bannon and H.R. Giger.

It reveals a veritable treasure trove of never-before-seen materials from the O’Bannon and Giger estates, including original story notes, rejected designs and storyboards, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and most importantly Dan O’Bannon’s original 29-page script from 1971, titled MEMORY.

‘Demonstrates that…the study of a film can be as exciting as the film itself’ The Wrap

About Making Noise Quietly
Verve Pictures has confirmed 19 July 2019 as the UK cinema release date for MAKING NOISE QUIETLY. Renowned theatre director Dominic Dromgoole here makes his feature film debut, which is adapted from Robert Holman’s acclaimed play of the same name by Robert Holman, Nick Drake and Mark Rosenblatt. The film stars Deborah Findlay (Hampstead, The Lady in the Van), Barbara Marten (The Village and People, Places and Things), Trystan Gravelle (Beast, TV’s Baptiste)

Geoffrey Streatfeild (TV’s The Thick of It), newcomer Luke Thompson and from the original stage play Matthew Tennyson.

MAKING NOISE QUIETLY is a triptych of encounters, all played out beneath the shadow of war. In 1944 in Kent, a conscientious objector (Luke Thompson) and a roaming artist (Matthew Tennyson) find friendship as the Second World War rages on across the Channel. In 1982 in Redcar, North Yorkshire, a bereaved mother (Barbara Marten) struggles with the memories of her son, lost in the Falklands War. Accompanied by a stunning score from Academy Award winner Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliot), this is a moving study of the effects of war and the deep scars left behind.

Dominic Dromgoole: “It was an honour to work on adapting Robert’s three luminous encounters for the screen; meetings between strangers which explore how by listening and telling, by watching and showing, people from different worlds can change both themselves and each other”

Quotes

“This is perfect brief for a film set in Northern Ireland in 2020.  Its people have always searched for an identity somewhere in between British influence and the mystique of Mother Ireland, and in these uncertain times we are in a unique place to illustrate that” Marie-Thérèse Mackle, producer

"Often in times of uncertainty and decline we eventually see a rebirth – something has to change. The Uncertain Kingdom gives us the opportunity to voice our concerns through a medium that has the power to capture audiences’ imaginations and give people something to think about and something they can relate to." Amy Binns, producer

"We’re thrilled to be part of the The Uncertain Kingdom family and to bring our film to life with their help and support. It is a great opportunity to say something about the UK today and we hope our film will shine a light on another side of British life.” Rubika Shah, writer and director

“Cinema can provoke a deep sense of empathy, something that feels increasingly scarce in these divided times. As part of The Uncertain Kingdom, we’re excited to explore both the barriers that enrage us and the human connections that give us hope.” Jason Bradbury, director, and Edward Cripps, writer

“The more I grow, the more I understand it’s my responsibility as an artist to attempt to challenge the environment around me. The Uncertain Kingdom has the potential to not only entertain and inspire, but to offer up those challenges. It’s an honour to be working amongst such an eclectic group of filmmakers whose work I admire and appreciate.” Ray Panthaki, writer and director

“I’m really excited to make this film with the backing of Uncertain Kingdom. They have actively welcomed raw, unapologetic storytelling and perspectives, allowing filmmakers to push their artistic voice to the extreme in order to grow.” Lanre Malaolu, director and choreographer

“The Uncertain Kingdom is an opportunity to express a point of view at a time of change within the UK.  I’ve always thought it was important to ask questions of a viewer as well as entertain.” Jason Wingard, writer and director

“As technology advances and our future becomes increasingly more unstable and harder to predict, it's important that filmmakers share thoughts on this crucial time in history. That's why I think that the conversations that will be created from The Uncertain Kingdom project will strike a huge chord with many people.” Iggy LDN, director

“In times of uncertainty, films can help us to reflect on who we are as a society. This is important for film makers and audiences alike because it opens up a conversation about where we go next and what we want to become. We’re delighted to be a part of this conversation through the Uncertain Kingdom project.” Matt Wenham, producer

“In such unsettled and unclear times, it is vital to harness the power of storytelling - to cast its clarifying light. The Uncertain Kingdom understands this and has brought together a diverse group of storytellers to collectively illuminate our visions.” Rebecca Lloyd-Evans, director

“These are strange days - certainly in my lifetime so to have the opportunity to capture a small bit of this strangeness with my camera and to be part of a collective of different voices and visions is very exciting!” Carol Salter, director

“Uncertain Kingdom is a fantastic chance for us as filmmakers to reflect on the divisive world we find ourselves in today. The arts are at their most powerful when they can provoke discussion through character and story rather than just politicians’ quotes, so we're really excited to be part of this collective.” Helen Simmons, producer
