REVIEW: Gran Turismo (2023) - Starring Archie Madekwe

Review by Jon Donnis
"Gran Turismo" takes a thrilling spin through the world of motorsport, chronicling the journey of Jann Mardenborough from a Gran Turismo gamer to a professional race car driver. Neill Blomkamp's directorial prowess shines through in this biographical sports drama.

Bringing to life the remarkable true tale of an unconventional trio of underdogs: a determined gamer from a working-class background (portrayed by Archie Madekwe), a past-his-prime race car driver (played by David Harbour), and an optimistic motorsport executive (played by Orlando Bloom). Their collective journey is an audacious gamble, pitting them against the pinnacle of the sports world.

The film impresses with speedy action and a feel-good underdog narrative, capturing the essence of a solid racing movie. The racing sequences are expertly crafted, providing an adrenaline-pumping experience, especially during the climactic 24-hour race in France. Blomkamp's direction adds a layer of authenticity to the storytelling, creating a surprisingly genuine and satisfying climax.

However, the film somewhat falters after the initial setup, swiftly transitioning into a more conventional racing movie. It could have delved deeper into the transformative power of video games, exploring how they can change people's lives for the better, and open up opportunities in the real world. Despite this missed opportunity for a more profound exploration, "Gran Turismo" still stands as a commendable representation of the racing genre.

In summary, "Gran Turismo" delivers a solid racing movie experience with remarkable action sequences and a captivating underdog story. While it could have delved further into its gaming roots, the film successfully captures the thrill and drama of the racing world, earning a well-deserved 7 out of 10.

REVIEW: Expend4bles (2023) - Starring Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture

Review by Jon Donnis
Expend4bles, the fourth electrifying chapter in The Expendables saga, rekindles the essence of classic action films, delivering a turbocharged cinematic experience. Headlined by a stellar ensemble cast including action icons like Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and an array of new talents, the film doesn't skimp on the explosive action sequences and bone-crushing confrontations that fans have come to expect.

Jason Statham's performance as Lee Christmas stands out, bringing depth and intensity to his character, especially in the realm of knife combat. The film shines with its relentless action, boasting memorable set pieces that embrace the franchise's reputation for exhilarating and adrenaline-pumping sequences.

However, amidst the star power, some of the new cast additions fall short, failing to match the impact of the established stars from previous films. Additionally, there were instances of lacklustre special effects and CGI, a common woe in contemporary Hollywood blockbusters due to rushed production timelines.

The storyline follows the Expendables as they venture into Libya to thwart the machinations of the enigmatic Ocelot, who plans to plunge the world into chaos with stolen warheads. The stakes are high, and the team's loyalties are tested as they battle adversity, with Lee Christmas taking the lead to avenge a fallen comrade and prevent a global catastrophe.

Though not groundbreaking, the narrative serves as a fitting framework for the relentless action, culminating in a gripping climax that encapsulates the core of the series.

Overall, Expend4bles is a nostalgic delight for action enthusiasts and die-hard fans of The Expendables. With its adrenaline-fueled action, resonant macho dialogues, a mix of beloved and fresh faces, the film pays homage to the essence of the series. Despite its imperfections, the movie emerges as a strong addition to the action genre, earning a commendable rating of 7.5/10.

REVIEW: Bottoms (2023) - Starring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz and Havana Rose Liu

Review by Jon Donnis
"Bottoms" is a 2023 American satirical teen sex comedy film directed by Emma Seligman, and it certainly makes a bold and unconventional statement.

One of the film's strengths lies in its audacious and humorous take on various themes. "Bottoms" stands out as a satirical critique of victimization, violence, and even itself. The exaggerated and absurd situations it presents create a unique and somewhat absurd comedic experience.

Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri deliver commendable performances in their respective roles, adding depth to the characters they portray. Emma Seligman's direction also deserves credit for managing the film's unconventional narrative.

However, "Bottoms" does have its share of drawbacks. It's apparent that the film carries a particular agenda, which may not resonate with everyone. The casting choices seem driven by a checkbox mentality, which can detract from the authenticity of the characters and their interactions. This emphasis on being "woke" at times overshadows the potential for the film to become an instant classic.

The deliberate cringe-worthy moments intended for comedic effect often come across as uncomfortable rather than genuinely funny, which can disrupt the overall viewing experience. Additionally, the film struggles to strike a balance between full-on comedy and moments of seriousness and drama, resulting in an uneven tone.

One of the film's biggest challenges is its difficulty in making the audience genuinely care about the characters or their outcomes. This lack of emotional connection can limit the impact of the film's more dramatic moments.

In summary, "Bottoms" is a satirical and unconventional take on the teen sex comedy genre. While it has its moments of humor and strong performances, it also grapples with its own agenda and struggles to maintain a consistent tone. Ultimately, it may appeal to those who appreciate a more offbeat and daring approach to comedy, but it may leave others feeling disconnected and uncomfortable.

With a rating of 5 out of 10, the film offers a mix of over-the-top humor, strong lead performances, and a distinctive approach to the typical high-school comedy genre.

REVIEW: The Retirement Plan (2023) - Starring Nicolas Cage

Review By Jon Donnis
Director and writer Tim Brown delivers a punchy 2023 American crime thriller, "The Retirement Plan," featuring a stellar cast and a plot that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The film scores a solid 7 out of 10 for its intense action sequences, Nicolas Cage's charismatic performance, and the underlying theme of family bonds and redemption.

The story follows Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell), caught in a perilous criminal conspiracy. Seeking refuge and aid, Ashley turns to her estranged father, Matt (Nicolas Cage), a retired government assassin known as "the sneak." The film kicks off with an air of mystery surrounding Cage's character, seamlessly transitioning from the sunny Cayman Islands to the gritty world of crime.

One of the film's standout qualities is the abundance of adrenaline-pumping action scenes that leave the audience thoroughly entertained. Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Matt is a highlight, as he strikes the right balance between lethal seriousness and a playful spirit, demonstrating his seasoned acting prowess. It's evident that Cage enjoys embodying the role, adding a layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience.

"The Retirement Plan" isn't just about action; it carries a deeper message about truth, forgiveness, and the pursuit of a peaceful life. The narrative sheds light on the unexpected complexities of familial relationships and the transformative power of confronting one's past. This theme adds depth to an otherwise action-packed storyline.

However, the film does have its drawbacks. Excessive profanity might detract from the overall viewing experience for some, and the level of violence, although fitting for the genre, might surprise those expecting a lighter, more comedic thriller. The tonal shift towards a more serious and violent narrative might not align with initial expectations, impacting the overall enjoyment for some viewers.

In conclusion, "The Retirement Plan" is an engaging crime thriller with exciting action, a charismatic performance by Nicolas Cage, and a compelling exploration of family dynamics and redemption. While it's not without its flaws, the film succeeds in delivering an adrenaline-fueled viewing experience and a thought-provoking message. It's definitely worth a watch, earning a solid 7 out of 10 for its entertainment value and narrative depth.

REVIEW: Office Race (2023) Starring Joel McHale and Beck Bennett

Review by Jon Donnis
Rating: 7 out of 10
Office Race, a 2023 comedy film, pleasantly surprises by defying the expectations typically associated with direct to television comedies. While it may initially seem like just another run-of-the-mill comedy, the movie delves deeper into its characters and themes, striking a balance between all out comedy and funny drama.

The story follows Pat Cassidy (Beck Bennett), a typical corporate worker with little ambition and a strong aversion to running, who unexpectedly finds purpose in long-distance marathon running. The plot takes an unexpected turn when his workplace rival, Spencer (Joel McHale), coerces him into participating in a charity marathon, leading to a series of twists and personal revelations.

Joel McHale and Beck Bennett deliver commendable performances, embodying their characters' dynamics with skill. The film's tone is light-hearted, avoiding excessive cheesy one-liners or outdated humour often found in the comedy genre. Instead, it focuses on a variety of characters, each contributing to the story in their unique ways.

Director Jared Lapidus handles the limited production constraints of a television film well, allowing the script's rhythm to flow naturally and maintaining a respectable level of professionalism. The movie's central character study, particularly focusing on Pat's transformation and self-discovery, adds depth and appeal to the narrative.

While Office Race isn't without its flaws, including limitations in production and storytelling, it maximizes its potential to provide an entertaining and enjoyable viewing experience. The film successfully conveys the message of finding redemption and meaning in ordinary aspects of life, making it worth a watch for those seeking a heartwarming and relatable comedy.

REVIEW: Elevator Game (2023) - Starring Megan Best and Gino Anania

Review by Jon Donnis
Director: Rebekah McKendry
Rating: 7.5/10

Elevator Game, directed by Rebekah McKendry, takes audiences on a nerve-wracking journey into the supernatural. The film begins with a compelling scene, cleverly utilizing shots of Becki (Megan Best) navigating the elevator's buttons and the underlying machinery, setting an ominous tone. As the story unfolds, a mysterious entity known as The 5th Floor Woman comes into play, thrusting the plot into a realm of horror.

Becki's disappearance leaves her socially awkward teenage brother, Ryan (Gino Anania), desperate for answers. Uncovering that she had played 'The Elevator Game' before vanishing, he resolves to follow her footsteps and find out the truth. Ryan intertwines his fate with a group of YouTubers led by Chloe (Verity Marks), exploring the supernatural. The film delves into the Elevator Game, a ritual attempting to traverse dimensions, adding an exciting layer to the narrative.

The film's strengths lie in the depiction of The 5th Floor Woman as a formidable horror villain, inflicting terror upon the young adults in creative and gory manners. The cinematography is commendable, effectively building tension and delivering well-timed jump scares that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

However, Elevator Game could have benefited from more extensive explanation regarding the game itself, its historical context, and the intricacies of the alternate dimension. Additionally, delving into The 5th Floor Woman's motivations and her vendetta could have added depth to the narrative.

In summary, Elevator Game offers an enjoyable albeit straightforward horror experience, drawing inspiration from the realms of Japanese horror. While the film could have surpassed its potential with a more refined script and a reduction of clichés, it remains an engaging horror film with captivating elements that will leave fans of the genre satisfied.

REVIEW: Aporia (2023) - Starring Judy Greer

Review by Jon Donnis
"Aporia" is a curious blend of sci-fi and drama that takes an unconventional approach to time travel. While it may not be the sweeping time-travel epic some might expect or even perhaps want, the film manages to captivate with its strong performances from the lead actors.

The story revolves around Sophie, portrayed convincingly by Judy Greer, who is still grieving the loss of her husband Mal, played by Edi Gathegi, due to a tragic accident. The unexpected entry of Mal's best friend, Jabir, a physicist with a vendetta, adds an intriguing twist to the narrative. Payman Maadi's portrayal of Jabir is commendable, making the character both complex and relatable.

The concept of time travel in "Aporia" is unique in that it's more of a plot device than the central theme. Jabir's homemade time machine, while visually interesting, doesn't offer the traditional time-travel experience but rather serves as a means to explore themes of vengeance, regret, and the consequences of altering the past. Basically, Jabir can use the machine to send particles back in time, and using say the details of a photograph, GPS coordinates etc, he can send back the proverbial bullet and shoot someone in history, therefore changing it forever. And only Sophie and Jabir have memories of the original timeline.

One of the film's strengths lies in its well-executed cinematography and believability. The visuals and performances help immerse viewers in the story, even when the plot takes some rather absurd turns. However, the film's start can be confusing, as it initially leaves the audience unaware of Mal's death, creating a disjointed narrative. Moreover, the ending might leave some viewers unsatisfied, as it veers into territory that some might find less compelling.

While "Aporia" is marketed as a sci-fi film, it doesn't fully embrace the genre, feeling more like a "low-fi" endeavour. This deviation from typical sci-fi tropes could be both refreshing and disappointing, depending on one's expectations. Additionally, it's worth noting that the film's inclusivity in terms of diversity may feel a bit forced in the context of the story, for example you have the interracial couple, the best friend who is a middle eastern refugee and so on. When was the last time you saw a film where there wasn't an interacial couple, or a story of some middle eastern refugee? Just comes across as forced.

In summary, "Aporia" is a film that walks a fine line between sci-fi and drama, and while it might not cater to every sci-fi enthusiast's taste, it delivers a thought-provoking narrative driven by strong performances. Despite its minor flaws and unconventional take on the genre, it manages to hold viewers' attention throughout.

With a score of 6 out of 10, "Aporia" is worth a watch for those seeking a unique weepie type cinematic experience with a time-travel twist. But for full on sci-fi film fans, this might not be for you.

REVIEW: Talk to Me (2023) - Starring Sophie Wilde and Joe Bird

Review by Jon Donnis
"Talk to Me" is an Australian supernatural horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, and it offers viewers a compelling and eerie experience that's sure to leave you both intrigued and unsettled. The film manages to achieve a solid 7 out of 10 thanks to its gripping story, impressive practical effects, strong performances from the young cast, and a palpable sense of dread.

The movie centres on a group of teenagers who stumble upon a mysterious embalmed hand that allows them to communicate with spirits. What starts as a thrilling and enticing discovery quickly spirals into a nightmarish descent as they push the boundaries of their newfound power.

One of the standout elements of "Talk to Me" is the really well created creepy atmosphere. The film does an excellent job of building tension, relying on a minimum of special effects and a well-crafted sound design to keep viewers on edge. The practical effects used to depict the possession scenes are particularly impressive and contribute to the film's overall eerie vibe.

Sophie Wilde's performance as Mia is a highlight of the film. She delivers a strong lead performance and could potentially become a noteworthy scream queen in the genre. Joe Bird also shines in his role as Riley, adding depth and emotional weight to the story.

However, "Talk to Me" isn't without its flaws. The ending may leave some viewers wanting more closure and emotional resolution. Additionally, the film leaves several questions unanswered, and at times, it relies on shaky logic to drive the plot forward.

The supporting cast, including Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, and Miranda Otto, all contribute solid performances, showcasing the talent of the young ensemble.

In summary, "Talk to Me" is a supernatural horror film that successfully delivers a spine-tingling experience. Its gripping story, impressive practical effects, and strong performances make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. While it may not provide all the answers or a fully satisfying ending, it keeps you engaged and immersed in its eerie world. Sophie Wilde and Joe Bird's performances are particularly noteworthy, adding depth to the characters and the overall narrative. If you're in the mood for a supernatural thriller with a dose of creepy and violent encounters, "Talk to Me" should be on your watchlist.

REVIEW: King of Killers (2023) - Starring Alain Moussi, Kevin Grevioux, and Stephen Dorff

Review by Jon Donnis
"King of Killers" delivers a visceral punch of adrenaline, bringing together the talents of Alain Moussi, Kevin Grevioux, and Stephen Dorff in a bloody spectacle that action aficionados will relish. This thriller, adapted from Darkstorm Comics, marks Grevioux's directorial debut, and it's clear he knows how to create intense, action-packed sequences.

At the heart of the story is Marcus Garan, brilliantly portrayed by Alain Moussi. As a hitman for the enigmatic Xane, played by the ever-suave Stephen Dorff, Marcus is known for his ruthless efficiency. However, what sets this film apart is Marcus's dual life, juxtaposing his deadly profession with his loving family. This unique aspect adds depth to his character and gives viewers someone to root for beyond the typical anti-hero.

The plot takes a heart-wrenching turn when Marcus's wife, Karla, played by Amy Groening, becomes a victim of a job gone wrong. This tragedy forces Marcus to step away from contract killing, and it's here that the film introduces a familiar but effective trope, a desperate father pushed back into the game to save his ailing daughter who suddenly has a heart condition. While this narrative device might seem cliché, it serves as the catalyst for the pulse-pounding action that follows.

The movie truly comes alive in Tokyo, where Marcus faces off against Jorg Drakos, portrayed menacingly by Frank Grillo. The King of Killers himself has concocted a deadly game that pits Marcus and six other elite assassins against each other in a high-rise filled with traps. The premise is intriguing, and it sets the stage for intense, heart-pounding showdowns.

"King of Killers" doesn't hold back on the violence, offering a relentless display of headshots, throat slashes, and bone-crunching action. Fans of hardcore action will revel in the brutal choreography and intense combat scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat.

However, the film isn't without its flaws. Some aspects of the storyline, such as Marcus's double life, come across as unintentionally silly and may strain credulity at times. While these moments might break the immersion for some viewers, the film's relatively short 90-minute runtime helps maintain its pacing.

In the end, "King of Killers" is a super-violent and brutal action thriller that doesn't apologize for its ferocity. It offers a rollercoaster ride of action and suspense, even if it occasionally veers into the realm of the absurd. For fans of relentless, over-the-top action, this film is an easy watch. I score "King of Killers" a solid 7 out of 10. It may not reinvent the genre, but it delivers what it promises, a wild, adrenaline-fueled ride through the world of contract killers and deadly games.

REVIEW: The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) Starring Javier Botet

Review by Jon Donnis
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" takes audiences on a chilling journey that successfully resurrects the classic tale of Dracula with a fresh and haunting perspective. Directed by André Øvredal and penned by Bragi F. Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz, this 2023 supernatural horror film navigates the treacherous waters of horror with a blend of atmospheric dread and savage surprises.

The film's premise revolves around the ill-fated voyage of the merchant ship Demeter, led by the capable Corey Hawkins as Clemens, a doctor who unwittingly joins the doomed crew. A standout performance comes from Aisling Franciosi as Anna, a stowaway enslaved by the sinister Dracula, portrayed with eerie mastery by Javier Botet. The cast, including Liam Cunningham as Captain Elliot and David Dastmalchian as first mate Wojchek, delivers solid performances that anchor the film.

One of the film's strengths lies in its ability to create a thick atmosphere of dread. From the moment the Demeter sets sail from Varna, Bulgaria, to its eventual arrival on the British coast, viewers are enveloped in an aura of impending doom. The cinematography and sound design work in tandem to maintain a sense of unease throughout the film.

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" impressively balances horror and suspense. It skilfully incorporates the source material from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," breathing new life into a classic tale while maintaining its core essence. The film's reliance on the original "Captain's Log" chapter adds depth and intrigue to the narrative.

Furthermore, the movie is filled with delightfully savage surprises that keep the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats. The unexpected turns in the plot and the relentless pursuit of Dracula create a sense of urgency that keeps the story moving at a brisk pace.

However, it's worth noting that the film does have its limitations. Given its source material, there's a certain predictability to the storyline. Those familiar with the Dracula legend will find few surprises in terms of the overall narrative arc. Nevertheless, the film manages to inject enough fresh elements and suspense to keep viewers engrossed.

In summary, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" is a smart, well-made, and sometimes downright creepy take on the Dracula legend. It successfully taps into the iconic vampire's lore while offering a fresh perspective. The combination of a talented cast, atmospheric dread, and savage surprises makes it a compelling horror film that will satisfy both die-hard horror buffs and general moviegoers. While it may not completely escape the trappings of its source material, it manages to carve its own path in the shadow of the vampire.

I score The Last Voyage of the Demeter a solid 8/10

REVIEW: The Equalizer 3 (2023) - Starring Denzel Washington

Review by Jon Donnis
"The Equalizer 3" delivers exactly what fans of the franchise have come to expect - a powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington, gripping action sequences, and a relentless pursuit of justice. While it may not break new ground in terms of storytelling, it stays true to its roots and offers a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, and once again, he dominates the screen with his commanding presence. McCall is a character who is both intimidating and endearing, and Washington's performance effortlessly balances these qualities. He is a force to be reckoned with, taking on the Sicilian Mafia with a vengeance that's almost cartoonish in its intensity.

"Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends' protector by taking on the mafia."

The action scenes are a highlight of the film, as McCall takes on his adversaries with brutal efficiency. Director Antoine Fuqua knows how to stage thrilling action, and he doesn't disappoint here. The audience is treated to a spectacle of violence as McCall dishes out his own brand of justice.

What sets "The Equalizer 3" apart is Denzel Washington's ability to bring depth to his character. McCall is not just a one-dimensional vigilante; he's a complex individual with a strong moral code, and Washington's portrayal captures this complexity beautifully. This film showcases Washington's versatility as both a dramatic actor and an action star.

The film does suffer from a somewhat formulaic story, but it manages to overcome this drawback with its intense action sequences and Washington's charismatic performance. It's clear that this instalment is aimed at fans who have been following McCall's journey from the beginning. If you weren't already a fan of the franchise, "The Equalizer 3" may not win you over though.

The supporting cast, including Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, and Sonia Ben Ammar, all deliver solid performances that complement Washington's lead role. The Sicilian Mafia setting adds a new layer of intrigue to the story and sets the stage for an epic showdown.

In summary, "The Equalizer 3" may not reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't need to. It offers what fans have come to love about the franchise - Denzel Washington's magnetic performance, intense action, and a quest for justice. If you've been following Robert McCall's journey, this final instalment is a satisfying conclusion that deserves a strong 8 out of 10.
