REVIEW: Talk to Me (2023) - Starring Sophie Wilde and Joe Bird

Review by Jon Donnis
"Talk to Me" is an Australian supernatural horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, and it offers viewers a compelling and eerie experience that's sure to leave you both intrigued and unsettled. The film manages to achieve a solid 7 out of 10 thanks to its gripping story, impressive practical effects, strong performances from the young cast, and a palpable sense of dread.

The movie centres on a group of teenagers who stumble upon a mysterious embalmed hand that allows them to communicate with spirits. What starts as a thrilling and enticing discovery quickly spirals into a nightmarish descent as they push the boundaries of their newfound power.

One of the standout elements of "Talk to Me" is the really well created creepy atmosphere. The film does an excellent job of building tension, relying on a minimum of special effects and a well-crafted sound design to keep viewers on edge. The practical effects used to depict the possession scenes are particularly impressive and contribute to the film's overall eerie vibe.

Sophie Wilde's performance as Mia is a highlight of the film. She delivers a strong lead performance and could potentially become a noteworthy scream queen in the genre. Joe Bird also shines in his role as Riley, adding depth and emotional weight to the story.

However, "Talk to Me" isn't without its flaws. The ending may leave some viewers wanting more closure and emotional resolution. Additionally, the film leaves several questions unanswered, and at times, it relies on shaky logic to drive the plot forward.

The supporting cast, including Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, and Miranda Otto, all contribute solid performances, showcasing the talent of the young ensemble.

In summary, "Talk to Me" is a supernatural horror film that successfully delivers a spine-tingling experience. Its gripping story, impressive practical effects, and strong performances make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. While it may not provide all the answers or a fully satisfying ending, it keeps you engaged and immersed in its eerie world. Sophie Wilde and Joe Bird's performances are particularly noteworthy, adding depth to the characters and the overall narrative. If you're in the mood for a supernatural thriller with a dose of creepy and violent encounters, "Talk to Me" should be on your watchlist.
