Synopsis
The latest from director Pat Collins (Silence), SONG OF GRANITE is a critically acclaimed, lyrical and unconventional profile of the life of the complex and enigmatic Joe Heaney - one of the greats of traditional Irish singing (sean nós), and the country that made him.

No Postage Necessary - Starring George Blagden and Charleene Closshey to become available on The Blockchain in June, 2018

LONDON (21 March, 2018) -- Two Roads Picture Co. has announced the premiere of its first feature No Postage Necessary which is set to make an unprecedented, world-wide debut on the blockchain in June, 2018. The dramatic comedy about a luckless computer hacker who falls for a pretty war widow will be the first-ever feature film to be available to stream on a blockchain platform and available for purchase using cryptocurrency.

In No Postage Necessary, Sam (George Blagden) always seems to make the wrong decision. A convicted computer hacker, he's single, jaded and barred from using the internet. Forced to crash on his brother's couch, he makes ends meet by working at the local Twistee Treat and stealing mail while disguised as a postal worker. Then, a single pink envelope changes everything. Handwritten by a heartsick Josie (Charleene Closshey) to her late husband and fallen Marine, the tender missive awakens something in Sam. Desperate to be worthy of such love, he conspires to meet the beautiful, young war widow, longing to become a better man. As the two grow closer, she warms to the idea of a new chance at love, but not before Sam's past comes knocking in the form of an FBI agent looking for missing bitcoins.

“We are thrilled to provide movie lovers around the world a brand new way to experience their entertainment by turning the blockchain into a feature film distribution channel. Although this is a first for the industry, we hope it will signal a shift in the way content is shared and consumed. There are many advantages to blockchain distribution, including immutable proof of Intellectual Property rights, transparent royalty payments, and, since all data on the blockchain is resistant to duplication, we can now envision a world where films are no longer pirated,” states Jeremy Culver who wrote, directed and produced No Postage Necessary.

“This movie stands at a unique intersection of the entertainment landscape, having been shot on 35mm film while its release model ushers in the age of blockchain distribution,” Culver adds.

Charleene Closshey, star and producer of the film, notes that she and the female-led producing team recognized the opportunities around the title the moment they read the script.

“We were drawn to Jeremy’s script because it’s timely and relevant,” says Closshey. “Although the film makes light of a misguided cyber genius who can hack a multi-billion dollar corporation within minutes, these types of technological advancements are becoming a normal part of everyday life for society as a whole...”

Speaking to the serendipity of a movie about bitcoin being the first to release on the blockchain, Culver notes, “Up until now, the technology just hasn’t been ready - there wasn’t a platform to support the vision. But, innovation creates its own timing. As we were putting the finishing touches on the film, we met Thomas Olson at Vevue, a  dApp (de-centralized application) running on Qtum, a  blockchain platform we had been tracking for some time. Since Thomas and his team were in the advanced stages of developing a video distribution channel most others were only talking about, and with Qtum being the only truly decentralized platform able to support the transaction load, the partnership really came along at the perfect time,” says Culver.

For the blockchain debut, Two Roads Picture Co. has partnered with Vevue, a peer-to-peer incentivized video network built on Qtum,  the most advanced blockchain in the world. Additional partners include Qbao, a digital wallet to process the cryptocurrency transactions, and CoMakery, a smart contract provider to allow royalty disbursements directly to investors and creatives.

Directed by Jeremy Culver, No Postage Necessary was produced by Culver together with Charleene Closshey of Two Roads Picture Co. Closshey stars in the film as Josie and also composed the film’s score.

The Most Unconventional Families In Film

Can anyone really say that they have a ‘normal’ family? From your Dad embarrassing you in front of your friends, your brother tackling you to the floor out of the blue or your mum dancing around the living room to a Whitney Houston ballad, many of us would be hard pushed to say that we had an unequivocally normal experience whilst growing up. But when it comes to families on the screen we can often get served a reality check of just how normal our families compare to such an unconventional bunch.

To celebrate the release of Daddy’s Home 2, which is out now on Digital Download, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD™, we’ve been thinking about some of the most unconventional families to hit the screen. The sorts of ones that make you cringe, wonder and laugh in disbelief, yet still show that no matter how unconventional they may be that family is family no matter what.

Daddy’s Home 2
A kind-hearted, shy and socially awkward Will Ferrell combined with a leather clad, tough-faced and muscular Mark Wahlberg, having to work together to co-father, what could possibly go wrong? Following on from the hilarious action of Daddy’s Home, Daddy’s Home 2 adds more madness into the mix when Grandfathers Kurt and Don arrive proving that bitter rivalries don’t disappear with age and on this occasion more daddies’ lead to more problems.

Giving new meaning to the term ‘blended’ family, Daddy’s Home 2 acts as a hilarious and heart-warming tale of adolescence, adulthood and a clash of personalities coming together and trying to survive in the most unlikely of situations  to conjure up the perfect Christmas for the family.

Sound of Music
Imaging being a child again, I’m sure it’s the dream right? But imagine being a child again with an absence of all-things fun and a strict ban of singing… not so much the dream now. This was the reality of the von Trapp children in the Sound of Music, mother-less and under the strict instruction of their Captain father, these children dreamed of someone to come and bring some much needed disruption into their lives.

Who better qualified than the magical Julie Andrews… sorry, Maria. Injecting some spontaneity into the lives of these children and their reluctant father, Maria joining them in their humble abode proved that the most unconventional of families can sometimes bring the most happiness.

The Addams Family
A unique song for one of America’s most unique families, the Addams family theme tune is a one that lingers in your head, in a similar way to which the family leave a lasting impression on each person they meet. Filled with séances, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt and a hand called Thing, it’s clear to see that The Addams family curb the trend away from the typically wholesome American family.

Despite their unconventional appearance however, the family are fiercely close knit, with Gomez and Morticia acting as exemplary supportive parents to their children and displaying a happy and passionate marriage, thus proving that conventional families are not always the best.

Modern Family
What do you get when you get a nuclear, same sex and step family? A modern family of course! Modern Family follows the family life of protagonist Jay Pritchett and his Los Angeles based family, consisting of his new and *ahem* slightly younger wife, their new-born son, his step-son, ex-wife, and their children and…. *deep breath* his grand-children! Try drawing out that family tree…

A truly hilarious mockumentary, Modern Family is the perfect show for anyone who needs a reminder of what an unorthodox family looks like and is a one that sincerely displays unconventional families as producing some of the most heart-warming of moments.

Daddy’s Home 2 is out now on Digital Download, 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD

The Powerful Truth: Real Life Heroes in Film

I’m sure we’d all love to imagine ourselves to be a hero. Many of us already think of ourselves as everyday heroes, whether it is in remembering to take that food out of the freezer, making cups of the tea for the office or giving up your seat on the bus for someone who needs it more than you. But when we need a reminder of what real heroes look like there’s only one place to turn – the movies.

To celebrate the release of Only the Brave, which is out now on Digital Download, DVD and Blu-ray, we’ve been thinking about some of the real life heroes that have graced the big screen… The one’s that have the power to conjure up a multitude of emotions whether it is tears, laughter or nail-biting suspense, as well as the stories to be taken away, the one’s that will have you feeling both proud and wistful.

The Granite Mountain Hotshots – Only the Brave
When fire roams fiercely, many would cower and turn to run, but not firefighters who continuously and selflessly risk their lives to overpower such a turbulent force. But what happens when a fire rages through a remote and tricky terrain? Hotshots are a small elite group of specially trained crews ready to deal with such intricate terrains. Incredibly strong and rigorously trained, Hotshots are equipped with tools of power to dig lines and cut trees to stop a fire from spreading further destruction.

Only the Brave tells the heroic tale of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who paid the ultimate price for their heroism. A symbol of brotherhood and strength, this elite crew put all their training into practice by belting up and walking headfirst into the flames to save their local community from being engulfed by the deadly Yarnell Hill Fire – true and selfless heroes.

Tom Hanks – Sully
Flying can be a nervous choice at the best of times, but when it comes to being a pilot you need to be fearless, brave and unequivocally skilled. Despite all this, things can go unexpectedly wrong, as was the case of Captain Chesley Sullenberger, one of the most experienced  pilot’s in the business, with over 40 years’ experience and 20,000 flying hours.

Tom Hanks was the perfect choice to play the heroic pilot in Sully, which tells the tale of how Sullenberg skilfully landed a US Airways plane into the Hudson River after the plane’s engines shut down, subsequently saving the lives of every member on board. A Hollywood veteran playing a veteran of the skies - Sully shows us what a true hero looks like.

Benedict Cumberbatch – The Imitation Game
Trying to work out the discount on a sale item can often be a stretch too far for many of our everyday brains, so the thought of cracking codes and processing formulas is quite frankly an alien (and laughable) concept! Not for some, however, who are gifted with incredible intelligence and find such activities as easy as a walk in the park.

One of our favourite Brit’s Benedict Cumberbatch plays genius code breaker Alan Turing in drama film The Imitation Game and tells the story of how Turing used his brain power to develop a code-breaking tool to decipher German naval messages during World War II. Although the exact extent of Turing’s impact is still unknown, experts believe that he saved 2 million lives and was one of the key players in aiding a win for the Allies.

Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
What is the extent of your bravery? Managing to get that pesky spider out of the room on your own or finally booking that dentist appointment that you’ve been putting off for so long? Or how about stepping onto a bloody battlefield unarmed to carry injured soldiers to safety?

Hacksaw Ridge depicts that precise bravery of US World War II medic Desmond T Doss. Firm in his religious beliefs but assured of his patriotism, Andrew Garfield’s portrayal shows the lengths that Doss went to in order to save his fellow comrades, which included stepping into deadly enemy firing lines to save 75 casualties one-by-one, yet still without any form of weapon. His bravery and goodwill earnt Doss the Medal of Honour and a heroes status.

Business is booming, but cracks are showing in the relationship. When April's growing fears about Eric's infidelity prove true, she begins an affair with sharp-dressed playboy Randall (Eric Balfour), a narcissistic control freak with a chic modernist mansion and some pretty extreme sexual appetites. April is launched out of the frying pan and into the furnace as this woman who uses clothes as an emotional crutch discovers her life is not as ideal as she thought.

Interview with Tami Stronach

Tami Stronach might be best known as the ‘Childlike Empress’ in ‘80’s hit THE NEVER-ENDING STORY but give it a couple of years and the actress and entrepreneur might be the next big thing in family entertainment. Stronach talks to us about the projects she’s developing at her company Paper Canoe Company, and her memories of working with Wolfgang Peterson on NES.

You’ve been working on a production of Jack & The Beanstalk in recent times?

Yes- through my company Paper Canoe. My husband, Greg Steinbruner, is one of those hyper creative kind of people, with an essentially endless list of stories he wants to tell. He grew up really idolizing the American folk scene of Pete Seeger and Arlo and Woodie Guthrie that had a lot of story in the music and a strong political point of view. He wanted to create a folk rock album around the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

He had a song or two that he’d shared with me, but he’s a lyricist not a musician, and he was kind of stuck for a while with it. I put him in touch with my friend, Jacob Silver, and the two of them just clicked. Jacob totally got what Greg was going for. He had actually played bass once for Pete Seeger on Letterman! So it was kind of a perfect creative match. Jake brought in some of the best Brooklyn indie-folk musicians to sit in and after the first studio session it was pretty clear this was not going to sound like ‘cute’ kids songs. This was going to tell a story and the musician-ship and production were going to be far beyond what we had originally hoped for.  And I’d get to do some singing which is always fun.

Is it fun ‘creating’ and being in charge of your own production?

Definitely! I love behind the scenes work!. There is so much creativity to be found in making choices about the style and tone of a project .

Do you also write and perform all the music in it?

No--I did not write the music--save for the chorus of the title song. And I don't play on the album. But I did have the great pleasure of performing vocals on it. Greg and Jake were the musical masterminds. My role was to produce the project—to bring together the best musicians possible and oversee how we would give the story a twist so that it would make sense for modern audiences. . I also enjoy visuals so I supervised the album art and created our Hey Wow Video from the album.

And how different is the story to the real Jack & The Beanstalk?

Very different. I turned it into a love story, of course! Jack and the Beanstalk with a girl-meets-boy twist. There are so many great themes in the classic story. Taking down a greedy giant when you’re the underdog. Getting a reward for having the courage to climb high and venture into unknown. But somehow telling my daughter that Jack defeats the bad guy by stealing his stuff and then killing him seemed sort of weird. So, we made sure that our giant was truly bad—an arrogant big shot who thinks he can steal everybody’s stuff a get away with it.

We asked ourselves what would be the best revenge that Jack could inflict upon someone like that? So, we gave the giant a daughter, instead of a wife. Her name is Harmony. She is kind of a rock star in waiting, a singer in need of a band. In our version, Jack is a little bit country, and Harmony is a little bit rock and roll, and they steal away together, breaking her obnoxious father’s heart. We like to imagine they become a legendary touring band called “Beanstalk Jack.” Isn't happiness always the best revenge?

Where has it toured? Considering taking it overseas at any time?

We’d like to take it everywhere! At this stage we’ve performed it to very excited crowds in New York and surrounds.

How many productions has your company put on now?

We’ve produced two stage shows and released our album ‘Beanstalk Jack’ last year.

What was the motivation with Paper Canoe?

With Paper Canoe, I’m putting all the things I’m passionate about under a single umbrella. I had this diverse life that included acting, dancing and singing—even doing a POP single when I was 11. Now I want to create family content that connects with kids, families and people who loved Never Ending Story, so that parents will have something magical to enrich their kids’ childhood.

Is there a built-in audience with it all, because of your association with Never-Ending Story?

Definitely! The fans of The Never-Ending Story are very loyal and I do find that there’s a lot of crossover appeal with the projects we’re doing at Paper Canoe.

Tell us about your partner in the company – has a legendary background in playwrighting and theatre, I believe?

He’s my husband, Greg Steinbruner. We met on the New York theatre scene – where he had done a lot of amazing work and continues to do so.

You’ve worked with so many talented people – but we’d be remiss not to ask about Wolfgang Peterson. How was that experience?

Wolfgang was amazing. What I loved about him was that – besides being a visionary – he treated us not as kids but as his equals, adults even.  I have nothing but wonderful things to say about working with him.

Thoroughbreds Poster & Trailer - Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Olivia Cooke, and Anton Yelchin

Childhood friends Lily and Amanda reconnect in suburban Connecticut after years of growing apart. Lily has turned into a polished, upper-class teenager, with a fancy boarding school on her transcript and a coveted internship on her resume; Amanda has developed a sharp wit and her own particular attitude, but all in the process of becoming a social outcast.

Though they initially seem completely at odds, the pair bond over Lily's contempt for her oppressive stepfather, Mark, and as their friendship grows, they begin to bring out one another's most destructive tendencies. Their ambitions lead them to hire a local hustler, Tim, and take matters into their own hands to set their lives straight.

Poster and Clip for Netflix's Zombie-Thriller 'Les Affamés' (AKA Ravenous)

The critically acclaimed film stars Marc-André Grondin, Monia Chokri, Micheline Lanctôt, Brigitte Poupart, Charlotte St-Martin, Marie-Ginette Guay Luc Proulx and Édouard Tremblay-Grenier. The film is produced by Stéphanie Morissette and C.S. Roy of La maison de prod (Montreal).

In Les Affamés, Aubert returns to his horror roots to tell the story of a changed small and remote village in upstate Quebec. Locals are not the same anymore--their bodies are breaking down and they have turned against their loved ones. A handful of survivors goes hiding into the woods, looking for others like them.

“Les Affamés enraptured audiences in Canada and we’re delighted to bring this unique Québécois voice to other countries around the world,” said Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film group. “From the U.S. to Japan to France, millions of Netflix members will be able to stream Robin Aubert’s extraordinary thrill ride. This is another exciting example of the investment the company is making in Canadian culture and bringing its stories and artists to the world.”

“I am so excited that viewers around the world will get the chance to watch Les Affamés. I'm also proud for the Netflix audience to experience its thrills and chills in its original Québécois version, my mother tongue, which is so rich and colorful, full of history and mystery, something that fully characterizes my universe as a filmmaker,” said writer/director Robin Aubert. “Even if I truly believe in mankind, I’m terrified when rage and hate get the best of us. Les Affamés echoes the current state in western societies. Making a zombie movie was my own personal way of expressing both my fears and hopes about what's lying ahead of us.”

Les Affamés premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2017 where it won Best Canadian Feature, and later played Fantastic Fest, Montreal Festival du nouveau cinéma where it won the Temps Ø Audience Award, The Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, and Torino Film Festival. Les Affamés is a Les Films Christal presentation of a La Maison de Prod production. Sara May of Paris-based Alma Cinema handled international sales.

The film was released theatrically in Canada in October 2017 and is now nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture. In December, TIFF named the film to its list of 2017’s ten best Canadian films.

Les Affamés will be available March 2, 2018, on Netflix in markets around the world, with the exceptions of Canada, Latin America and Eastern Europe. It will be available to Canadian Netflix members starting next year.
