Most Memorable Antagonists

No great hero would reach acclaim without the challenges set by a menacing, fear-inducing villain. Whether it’s Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men or Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, the great antagonists of the movies create the arc in the story, obstruct our protagonists at every turn, and stop at nothing to leave a trail of havoc in their wake.

In fact, many of the greatest characters in cinematic history are villains: complex, twisted, and utterly captivating. A convincing antagonist must be a multi-faceted character that challenges the audience to question what can drive one to such dark places.

The release of Sicario 2: Soldado on digital download 22nd October and on 4k UHD, Steelbook, Blu-Ray™ & DVD from 29th October 2018, allows us to witness the intriguing complexity of a great antagonist at work. CIA agent Matt Graver, played by Josh Brolin, is authorised by the US government to apply extreme measures – including deception, kidnapping, and murder– to combat a Mexican drug cartel that is suspected of smuggling terrorists across the US border. As Graver and his team push the limits of morality and go so far as to kidnap the young daughter of the cartel’s kingpin, audiences are left asking: who is really the villain?

To celebrate this film’s release, we are rounding up the top movies with the most memorable antagonists that have us squirming in our seats.

Bellatrix Lestrange
Arguably one of the most calculating and evil villains in the Harry Potter franchise is Bellatrix Lestrange, sister of Narcissa Malfoy and cousin of Sirius Black. Bellatrix can make the hairs stand on the back of necks with just a laugh. Bellatrix is infamous for her intensely sadistic approach to killing and torture. She takes huge pleasure in taunting and antagonising her victims, such as Neville Longbottom when she reminds him how she murdered his parents, and her callous killing of her very own cousin, Sirius Black. Actress Helena Bonham Carter delivers a harrowing performance with her gaunt and wild appearance and the crazed look in her eyes.

Hannibal Lecter
Even the name ‘Hannibal Lecter’ would not fail to send chills through the spine of any viewer. Sir Anthony Hopkins’ antagonist in Silence of the Lambs is a creepy and disturbing character that the American Film Institute named the ‘greatest villain in American cinema’ in 2003. Lecter is a cannibalistic serial killer who, whilst incarcerated, is summoned to assist FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling in catching a serial killer known as ‘Buffalo Bill’. He is a complex character, whose sophistication and refined tastes juxtapose his barbaric violence. Hopkins created the ultimate villain who continues to terrify audiences today.

The Joker
Although it is a character that has been portrayed many times in cinema, no portrayal is more memorable than the Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight. The Joker's storyline follows his attempts to undermine the efforts of Christian Bale’s Batman and the manic, deranged characterisation from Ledger is chilling, earning him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. As a character devoted to pure anarchy, his appearance, physicality and mannerisms reflect this. Ledger’s Jokers is revered as one of the greatest villains of all time and will not soon be forgotten.

Darth Vader
When we think of the archetypal ‘baddie’, we look no further than one of the originals, Darth Vader in Star Wars. The reveal of Darth Vader as Luke Skywalker’s father is revered as the greatest movie twist of all time. As we find out in the prequels, Darth Vader’s villainy wasn’t always so present. Originally called Anakin Skywalker, he was an innocent young jedi who was being mentored by Obi Wan Kenobi. However, in the search for justice, he was converted to the dark side, a decision that was triggered by the death of his Naboo senator PadmĆ© Amida, with whom he was having a secret relationship. A central theme of Star Wars is the conflict of good versus evil, and this conflict is no more apparent than within the character of Darth Vader.

Matt Graver
Josh Brolin’s character in the Sicario franchise is known for his willingness to do whatever is necessary to eliminate enemies of the states -- with little regard for morality. Director Denis Villeneuve creates an intense web of good and evil by exploring the hypocrisy of US government and the immoral tactics used by the CIA to combat Mexican cartels. However, in Sicario 2: Soldado, Josh Brolin’s character Matt Graver displays a torn moral conscious and shows the audience that he may not be callous through and through. The inner tension within a seemingly objectionable character is what makes for a memorable antagonist. Brolin’s Graver is arrogant, unyielding and brutal in his methods yet we see in Sicario 2: Soldado that there may be more to him than meets the eye.

Hereford Films announces THE KRAYS 2: MARKED FOR DEATH

London – October 29, 2018

Following the home entertainment success of The Krays: Dead Man Walking, prolific London indie Hereford Films has announced a sequel as part of an ambitious slate of British crime films.

THE KRAYS 2: MARKED FOR DEATH will focus on another untold chapter of the notorious twins' lives: their violent run-in with former boxing star Freddie Mills, who was suspected of being a serial killer known as 'Jack the Stripper', and who some say paid the Krays to murder him and make it look like a suicide.

Casting is underway, and Hereford Films will recruit a 'guest star' to play Mills, similar to Rita Simons' acclaimed starring role in the first film.

Producer Adam Stephen Kelly commented, “The formula for the first film – picking a previously untold story from the Krays' incredible history and casting a significant guest star to anchor it – worked phenomenally well, and so we are repeating it. True crime stories such as these are endlessly fascinating. So long as we keep the story fresh and within the realm of plausibility, this is something that could run and run".

The majority of the first film's ensemble cast is expected to return, with new additions to be announced shortly. Steve Wraith once again acts as consultant on the film as well as reprising his role as Hartnell Harris.

The Krays: Dead Man Walking was a significant success in the DVD market, having had the biggest first week of any non-theatrical British film of 2018, peaking at number 8 in the national chart, ahead of the likes of Black Panther and Ready Player One.

Other films on Hereford Films' British crime slate include gangland home invasion movie Reckoning Day starring Chris Ellison and Red Madrell, casino heist caper Swipe, and biopic Pretty Boy, based on the bestselling autobiography of legendary bare knuckle fighter Roy Shaw, who will be played by Mark Harris. There is also a third instalment of the company's We Still Kill the Old Way franchise on the way, entitled We Still Die the Old Way.

Commenting on the company's busy domestic slate, CEO Jonathan Sothcott said, “The success of our Krays picture is testament to the fact that there is still a voracious consumer appetite for proper, quality British gangster films in the home entertainment space. We are more than happy to fill that space. The Freddie Mills story is even more compelling than that of the Mad Axeman, so the Krays sequel will be bigger and better than its predecessor. The fans are going to love this”.

BLUE MY MIND - Theatrical Trailer and New Poster for 11/2/18 release

There’s something frighteningly fishy going on in Lisa BrĆ¼hlmann’s shocking debut feature Blue My Mind, in theaters and On Demand this November through Uncork’d Entertainment.

An elegiac allegory accompanied by hauntingly visceral body horror, Blue My Mind is part Suspiria and part The Metamorphosis but largely incontestably unique.

Luna Wedler and Zoƫ Pastelle Holthuizen headline a celebrated fantasy-drama about a young woman who faces an overwhelming transformation which calls her entire existence into question. Her body is changing radically, and despite desperate attempts to halt the process, she is soon forced to accept that nature is far more powerful than her.

The limited theatrical run for November kicks off in los Angeles at the Laemmle Glendale, where the film runs for two weeks thru to November 15.  The film will also play on the big screen in Columbus (10/26), Denver (10/26), and Tuscon (11/9), with other cities to be announced.

The VOD will be release on November 13 on such platforms as iTunes, Amazon Instant, Vudu, Google Play, xbox, Fandango Now, YouTube and Dish.

Synopsis : 15-year-old Mia and her parents move to the suburbs of ZĆ¼rich. While Mia plunges into a wild teenager existence, her body begins to change oddly. First hardly noticeably, but then with a force that threatens to drive her out of her mind. Mia’s transformation progresses inexorably, and she turns into the being which has slumbered within her for years... and is now gaining the upper hand.

Most Memorable Movie Scores

In any action movie, a powerful music score is essential to set pulses racing and crank up the intensity. A movie moment can be transformed with the use of one simple chord when struck at the right moment – and can turn a movie into an instant classic.

Fast-paced action films are nothing without a pulsating movie score to raise the stakes and maintain the momentum throughout the most dramatic sequences. A brilliant example is the powerful theme “The Beast” by the late composer JĆ³hann JĆ³hannsson for the Oscar®-nominated film Sicario, which was re-imagined for the sequel Sicario 2: Soldado by composer Hildur GuĆ°nadĆ³ttir.

To celebrate the release of Sicario 2: Soldado on digital download from 22nd October and on 4K UHD, Steelbook, Blu-Ray™ & DVD from 29th October 2018, we are rounding up the top movies with the most memorable scores that continue to stir the senses time after time.

The Dark Knight
The music that scored the 2008 Christopher Nolan Batman reboot was so memorable that it was awarded ‘Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media’ at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard used a blend of electronic and orchestral elements to create a rich audible experience for the audience. The theme tune that the duo created for Heath Ledger’s ‘The Joker’ is particularly notable. The theme was made from two notes played on a variety of instruments and is a perfect accompaniment to the tortured character we see on our screens. The musical score is dramatic, at times solemn and menacing, and is a large factor in The Dark Knight being widely regarded as one of the best superhero films of all time.

Blade Runner
The soundtrack to the 1982 Harrison Ford classic is regarded as a historically important piece in the genre of electronic music. The neo-noir science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott required a score that matched the futuristic nature of the movie. Composer Vangelis heavily relied on synthesizers alongside a classical composition to create the gloomy, electronic sound. The film is, somewhat disconcertingly, set in a dystopian ‘future’ Los Angeles of 2019, in which synthetic humans known as replicants are bio-engineered by the powerful Tyrell Corporation to work on off-world colonies. The Blade Runner music score created some of the most memorable atmospheric soundscapes from the 80’s and, like the film, was designed as a look in to the supposed technological future.

Jaws
Our list of the most memorable movie scores would not be complete without the Steven Spielberg thriller Jaws. The main theme for the film, that composer John Williams said was meant to represent the shark as an ‘unstoppable force’ of ‘mindless and instinctive attacks’, is as infamous as the film itself. Jaws is a perfect example of a musical score transforming the appeal of the film, as even Spielberg himself has admitted that without Williams' score the film would have been only half as successful. Those two alternating notes in the film’s main theme song are enough to instil fear into the most composed of adults. It is no wonder that the score earned Jaws an Academy Award for ‘Best Original Score’ in 1976.

Interstellar
Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan reunited for one of the stand out films of 2014 and the fourth entry in our ‘Most Memorable Movie Scores’ list. Set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive, Interstellar follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity. Zimmer used a large organ as the primary instrument for the score which worked to create the atmosphere of the magnitude of space.  The experimental and unusual techniques used by Zimmer breathed life back into the science-fiction genre and also brought a huge amount of emotion to the film.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
A major influence on Western scores, Ennio Morricone was responsible for one of the greatest instrumental film scores of all time in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The 1966 epic Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood is set in the Southwest during the Civil War and follows three unsavoury characters who compete and cooperate in their quest for $200,000 in hidden Confederate gold. Morricone’s score is renowned for its ability to create tension and acts as a motif for the central characters. The music captures the atmosphere of the violent and turbulent western desert and is an important feature of one of the world’s best-loved Westerns.

Sicario 2: Soldado
From director Stefano Sollima, Sicario 2: Soldado is an uncompromising, unflinching look into the ruthless world of drug cartels – and the extremes that some will go to end the terror. The chaotic narrative and unrelenting pace of the film requires a score that can keep up with the action. Hildur GuĆ°nadĆ³ttir delivers a powerful and captivating score to beautifully compliment the gripping scenes and intriguing characters. The score succeeds in creating a constant sense of dread and danger rendering the audience unable to relax for even a moment. Sicario 2: Soldado is an unmissable movie experience.

LIMBO is an offbeat observation of refugees waiting to be granted asylum on a fictional remote Scottish island. Interview with Charlie Samuels

Virgin Blacktop is filmmaker Charlie Samuel's visual diary – one that explores his youth, friendships and love of skateboarding. It is currently doing the festival route.

Why skateboarding and when did you discover it?

Because I immediately fell the first time I stepped on a skateboard - which got me hooked as I felt the pull of respect, then challenge. When the Wizards started skating in the 1970s we were considered social outcasts by the mainstream but to us we felt we had discovered this incredible device of self-expression, not unlike a guitar, that also had a tolerant social sub-culture. We were obsessed with skating — it was our first love. I slept with my first skateboard in 1976, the year of America's bicentennial.

And for those that haven't seen it, how would you describe the film?

VIRGIN BLACKTOP is an uplifting, funny and emotional 50-year time capsule of 9 lives about American unity amongst boys skating across boundaries to become men.

How long has the film been coming? Where did it all start?

Our crew had a reunion in 1994 so we built a skateboard ramp inside my apartment in Manhattan, New York City. The energy and camaraderie amongst us was so unusual and elated that I had to film it with my new Hi8mm video camera. I thought that, if the energy translated well I would cut it for one of my half-hour documentary TV shows on Manhattan Neighborhood Network. I then remembered that others had shot us on 8mm film back when the Wizards were competing in the 1970s so I was hoping that if I found any of it I could add that in too. Not only did I find all of it but the cinematographers, Gail Tipton, Carlos Cisneros, Rolf Taylor, Will Hammerstein and James Oursler were stylistically way ahead of their time - the footage was stellar! So I had to do it justice and bust it out of a half hour cable access show into a real movie. I think VIRGIN BLACKTOP communicates 99% of the feeling of what it is like to form your own community that lasts a lifetime.

Can you tell me about some of the folks you've interviewed for the film?

I mostly interviewed the other 8 Wizards for VIRGIN BLACKTOP - some over a half dozen times each over 20 years. They are all so incredibly different but they are gregarious characters who cemented their personalities because of the confidence and support we gave each other as we ushered ourselves through adolescence in the 1970s. You have to meet them!

Can you tell us where audiences can see it?
