Ava Michelle to play the lead in new NETFLIX comedy film Tall Girl

Hollywood, CA - January 24, 2019 - After conducting an extensive worldwide casting call, Netflix announced today that actor, dancer, and model Ava Michelle will play the lead role in its upcoming live action comedy Tall Girl, making her feature film debut. The film captures the tone of the classic John Hughes movies, while exploring the nuanced and delicate relationships that make high school challenging, frustrating, memorable, and uplifting. Ava Michelle, who is 6 feet and 1 inch tall, will play Jodi, a 16 year old who must embrace what makes her different and be proud to stand out, not fit in.

Griffin Gluck (Netflix’s American Vandal, who also stars in the coming of age drama Big Time Adolescence) will star in Tall Girl as Jack Dunkleman, Jodi’s best friend. Actor, musician, and model Luke Eisner (The Goldbergs), who is making his feature film debut, will star as Stig, a handsome - and equally tall - Swedish foreign exchange student.

Sabrina Carpenter (The Hate U Give, forthcoming The Short History of The Long Road) stars as Harper, Jodi’s beautiful and extremely melodramatic pageant-winning older sister. Carpenter is signed with Hollywood Records and is preparing to embark on a world tour this year. Paris Berelc (Netflix’s Alexa & Katie) stars as Liz, the unconventional best friend of Jodi’s tormentor.

Rounding out Jodi’s family is Steve Zahn (Valley of the Boom, War for the Planet of the Apes) as Richie Kreyman, Jodi’s manic and anxious dad with a big heart and Angela Kinsey (Haters Back Off!, The Office) as Helaine Kreyman, Jodi's former pageant-queen mom who struggles to connect with her daughter.

Additional members of Tall Girl’s newly-announced cast are:

Anjelika Washington (DC Universe’s Stargirl) as Fareeda, Jodi’s best friend who seems to have it all figured out;
Clara Wilsey as Kimmy, the most popular girl at school and Jodi’s nemesis;
Rico Paris as Schnipper, a popular jerk and one of Jodi's regular tormentors
Production has begun in New Orleans with Nzingha Stewart (Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things) directing. The film is written by Sam Wolfson (Andi Mack, Finding Carter). It is Netflix’s fourth collaboration with Wonderland’s McG and Mary Viola (The Duff). Wonderland’s Corey Marsh also serves as a producer.

“It was essential for us to find an actor to portray our lead who can speak to the challenges and lessons that Jodi experiences from a very personal place of authenticity,” said Nzingha Stewart, the film’s director. “Ava’s ability to beautifully and uniquely showcase those attributes stood out to us in a way that we believe audiences will connect with. Tall Girl showcases that embracing the very qualities that make you different is what allows you to overcome anything.”

ABOUT TALL GIRL
Tall Girl is the 2019 Netflix original comedy about Jodi, the tallest girl in her school, who has never quite felt comfortable in her own statuesque skin. All of that changes when she falls for the handsome (and equally tall) foreign exchange student Stig who, of course, gets Jodi's quirky, best, male friend Dunkleman and his hippie mom as a host family. As a result, Jodi gets embroiled in a surprising love triangle, which helps her realize she’s far more than her insecurities about her height have led her to believe.

REVIEW: CLOSE - Netflix

Written, directed and produced by Vicky Jewson, Close has just been released on Netflix. The movie stars Noomi Rapace, Indira Varma and Olivia Jewson - who also happens to be Vicky’s younger sister.

Set in Morocco, Close follows Close Protection Officer Sam who has been hired to ensure that heiress, Zoe Tanner, arrives safely at the family home. Tanner has just inherited the controlling shares of Hassine Mining, a conglomerate that was founded by her stepmother's family.

The stepmother in question is Rima Tanner (played by Varma) and clearly the two do not get on. Tired of her step daughter’s antics and lack of direction, Rima turns her attention to the signing of a massive contract. The company wants to control phosphate mining in North Africa, but has come up against rival business Sikong.

On the eve of final negotiations, the family home suffers a security breach. The attempted kidnapping of Zoe Tanner has both her and Sam on the run. Finding few people that they can trust the duo must get out of Morocco or face certain death if the would-be kidnappers catch up with them.

When a police officer is killed in the process, things become altogether more difficult both for Sam and for Hassine Mining. Rima, more concerned about the potential collapse of the deal than the attempted murder of her step daughter, does almost nothing to help the situation.

What follows is a series of cat and mouse action scenes as Sam fights her way out of every tricky situation that arises. And there is a lot of action with Rapace flexing her muscles almost continually throughout. However, that’s about as substantial as it gets. While Close does provide answers to some of the film’s biggest questions, it all gets wrapped up very quickly with little real closure.

As big original action movies go, Close never really offers anything more than well choreographed fight sequences. Characters lack any real depth and parts of the story are ultimately unresolved. It’s watchable if somewhat unmemorable.

At The End Of The Day - Poster and Trailer

The award-winning At the End of the Day, from writer-director Kevin O’Brien, premieres On Demand this February.

After losing his wife and counseling practice, the only thing 32 year-old Dave Hopper has going for himself is his part-time professorship at his alma mater, a growing Christian college. And the only reason he even got that job was because his previous professor, now ambitious dean, pulled a few strings.

The dean’s plans for growth hit a snag when the property he wants to develop has been promised to a gay support group – which has plans to open an LGBT homeless teen shelter if they can raise the money in time. The dean is forced to take drastic measures, offering Dave his dream job, but he only gets it if he goes undercover in the group and stops them from raising the funds needed to buy the property.

Dave reluctantly agrees, and for the first time, is met face-to-face with the community he has been counseling against his entire career. The awkward and emotional experiences that follow lead Dave on a journey of truth, revealing that life and love are not as black and white as he first thought.

Danielle Sagona (“Graceland”), Tom Nowicki (“Bloodline”), Chris Cavalier (Pharmboy) and Susan Mulholland star in a Kevin O’Brien film, available February 26 On Demand.

The Industry Trust’s consumer education campaign continues to deliver the core message – inspiring audiences to choose the big screen experience. Like the others in the Moments Worth Paying For series, the trailer directs audiences to the industry-funded film search engine, FindAnyFilm.com, which signposts legal content sources, so they can book, buy and watch at their convenience.

Alita: Battle Angel comes to UK cinemas on February 6, 2019.

SYNOPSIS:
When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens in a future world she does not recognise, with no memory of who she is, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realises that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

That's Not A Knife - Official Trailer - An actor's journey to Hollywood - Inspired by Paul Hogan

The first trailer for That’s Not a Knife, featuring Christian Isaiah (“Shameless”), Aaron Jeffrey (X-Men Origins : Wolverine), and Andy McPhee (Wolf Creek) , has been released ahead of the documentary’s 2019 premiere.

Written and directed by Shaun A Robinson, That’s Not a Knife is a documentary about the hard and often unglamorous life of an actor. It explores the difficulties of succeeding in the industry and starting relationships.

Here’s the story of an actor who fights back against the odds by overcoming his own fears and creating his own path to Hollywood, documenting his journey along the way. He meets other actors who share their own fears and insecurities with him, helping help him to understand his own journey better and inspire others to do the same.

The film’s inspiration – it might go without saying- is Paul Hogan. The legendary actor is one of Australia's biggest exports, and became a household name with his irresistible comic performance in Crocodile Dundee in 1986, helping pave the way for many Aussie actors who followed in his footsteps. Aussie actors such as Robinson, who, very much like Hogan, made his Hollywood debut at a later stage in life (Shaun was 35 when he started acting).

The documentary includes sit-downs with such talent as Aaron Jeffries (‘’McLeod's Daughters’’, Chopper, The Operator), Shane Connor (‘’Neighbours’’, ‘’Fire’’), Christian Isaiah (‘’Shameless’’), and Kym Jackson (Ten Days in the Valley).

“That’s Not a Knife” is an independently and privately financed project and is looking for sponsorship from local companies who wish to support the independent film industry and have their logo appear in all “TNAK” Marketing and Apparel, and be credited in the film.

“The film developed out of Shaun sitting around waiting for his next job as an Actor to come along. Instead of continuing to wait, he was inspired to go out and create his own work and to silence the voice we all hear that tells us we’re not good enough”, says actor Andy McPhee, known for his roles in such classic Australian films as Wolf Creek and Animal Kingdom.

N.C.I.S actor Michael Welch says, “Getting to share part of my acting journey and showing that the business of acting is damn hard, is something we rarely get to do as actors unless you are an A list star. This film will show you the ups, the downs and the downright crazy stuff you have to endure to follow your chosen path of being a working actor.”

Lucinda Bruce produces with Gina Stoj associate producing.
Matt Nable has also just joined the cast.
