REVIEW: Lord of the Streets - Starring Anthony 'Treach' Criss, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Khalil Rountree Jr.

Review by Jonnis
Jason Dyson (Anthony 'Treach' Criss) is a former MMA fighter, he quit after killing his opponent in the ring, and now he has a gambling and drinking problem, his wife and kid want nothing to do with him, so his life has pretty much hit rock bottom.

When he refuses to make his prized fighter throw an MMA match, notorious gangster Kane (Quinton Jackson) decides to collects his debt by killing the fighter and kidnapping Jason's daughter Stacy (Chanda Am). To get his daughter back he has to train a prisoner to win five fights in a row in an underground MMA cage.

The film comes across as a run of the mill, paint by numbers type of film, you have the former fighter whose life has hit rock bottom, a family who want nothing to do with him, but he still loves, and the big gangster wanting payment for a debt. It is all standard stuff

There are a few recognisable MMA fighters in the film, other than Rampage, the most recognisable is Anderson Silva, the problem is that MMA guys just aren't very good actors, now I am not saying Pro Wrestlers are, but at least they have had training in performing to a crowd, and there has been some cross over in that world, with The Rock and John Cena. In the MMA world, only Rampage Jackson can claim a modicum of success as an actor.

Now with this been a Tubi original, the film is available for free, so it is not like you are going to lose anything from watching this, other than your time. So that is a positive.

The Good
Some of the fight scenes are decent, and it is always interesting to see someone you recognise in a film that you would not expect to see them in.

The Bad
The plot isn't great, and you will not really have any emotional investment in any of the characters.

Overall
A simple film about overcoming the odds. It is no Rocky, but I have seen worse in this genre. Plus, it is free!

I score Lord of the Streets a passable 5/10

REVIEW: What Is a Woman? - A Documentary by Matt Walsh

Review by Jon Donnis
So, I heard that critics are refusing to watch What Is a Woman, A Documentary by Matt Walsh, the reasoning they claim is that Matt is transphobic and that the Documentary is cruel and offensive. I suspect the reality is that these "film critics" fear the "woke mob" and extremist Trans activists might call them naughty words, so are staying well away.

However I have been taking on the very worst in society for over 20 years, so I am always willing to give anyone a chance, and deal with the consequences that come with it.

The question of "What Is a Woman?" would have seemed silly to ask just 5 or 10 years ago, the answer of course being a simple one, a woman is an adult human female. If you wanted to get more scientific, I read the following online which seemed pretty clear.

"Typically, women have two X chromosomes and are capable of pregnancy and giving birth from puberty until menopause. Female anatomy is distinguished from male anatomy by the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and vulva. The adult female pelvis is wider, the hips broader, and the breasts larger than that of adult males. Women have significantly less facial and other body hair, have a higher body fat composition, and are on average shorter and less muscular than men."

Unfortunately, in the modern era, the whole discussion of what is a woman, has become political nightmare. In part due to the fact that people don't want to be accused of being a bigot, and also the fear of being attacked by an increasingly violent and extremist activist group.

Matt Walsh decided to take on the question and interview people from all walks of life, and ask them that very simple question, which in Western Society seems to be the hardest question to answer in 2022.

The film hits highs and lows. Some of the answers, or should that be non-answers are hilarious, the mental gymnastics that some "professionals" will do to avoid answering the question is embarrassing, but there is also a more serious side to what is seemingly harmless question.

The interview with Scott Newgent, Founder of Trevoices, a trans man, is a tough watch, and perhaps one reason why mainstream critics are refusing to watch, because how can you listen to Scott's experiences and not be angry at the medical community who push people to have life altering surgery. It is the highlight of the film, and it will bring a tear to your eye.

Matt takes a very logical and science based approach throughout the movie, and when a tribe in the middle of Africa give the most sensible answers to his questions, you have to wonder what on earth happened to Western Civilisation that a random tribe in the middle of Africa with no modern conveniences, are able to speak more sense than PhD professors.

This is the Documentary to watch.

I score "What Is a Woman? - A Documentary by Matt Walsh" a perfect 10. A must-see Documentary, simple as that.

REVIEW: Corrective Measures (2022) - Starring Bruce Willis & Michael Rooker

Review by Jon Donnis
It's been a few weeks since I reviewed a Bruce Willis film, so I thought I would take a look at Corrective Measures, written, produced and directed by Sean O'Reilly.

With the recent developments with Bruce Willis' being diagnosed with aphasia, we know he has now retired from making films, but there are still some to come out, and this was one I was actually looking forward to.

Usually with a Bruce Willis film, I talk about low budgets, and him hardly being in it, well with Corrective Measures, there is actually something of a decent budget here. Ok not tens of millions, but still this is not your classic low budget stuff.

There are some recognisable actors, and some passable special effects.

So, what do you get if you cross an action film, a prison film, a science fiction film and monster film? Well, you get Corrective Measures. And as strange of a mix as that sounds, it does work.

The film starts off with a psychopathic villain called "Payback" played by Dan Payne confronting a couple of unusual looking folks who are attacking someone. One of the attackers is seemingly a werewolf and another is bullet proof.

Payback quickly disposes of them, and just when you think he is going to save the victim, he reveals that he only killed the other guys so he could kill the victim himself. The police turn up, arrest Payback and take him to San Tiburon a super prison for people with super powers.

In classic Robocop style, the film has entertaining news clips interspersed, and we get our first look at the Warden of the prison who is being interviewed. He quickly makes it clear that he is to be known as The Overseer, (played by Michael Rooker). We also get an introduction to Julius "The Lobe" Loeb played by Bruce Willis, another incarcerated super villain and the prisons most notorious guest.

The film covers 3 main story plot lines. Payback having issues with the other prisoners, the Overseer's attempts to get the location of The Lobe's money, and Diego Diaz a prisoner who's only power is empathy;

Corrective Measures never takes itself too seriously, it has some similarities to The Boys (on Netflix), and since it is a Tubi Original, it is free to watch anywhere Tubi is available.

The Good
Lots of fun fight scenes, a half decent story, an excellent Michael Rooker doing what he does best, and holding everything together, with his thoroughly dislikeable character. The ending is somewhat satisfying and there are even a couple of fun end credit scenes too.

The Bad
Bruce Willis doesn't really do a lot and is stuck in a cell for most of the film. So like many of his recent films, he has clearly filmed his parts away from everyone else, but knowing this might be one of the last films I ever see him in, I wished we could have seen more of him, but I understand now why we don't.

Overall
Corrective Measures is a fun little film, delivers what it promises, and as I mentioned earlier never takes itself too seriously. A special mention also for John DeSantis who plays a hulking monster type figure in the film called Darius.

I enjoyed the film, and I happily score it an 8/10

You can watch the film on Tubi, but that will depend if you can get it in your location. See https://tubitv.com/movies/665895/corrective-measures for details.

Luckily it is also coming out on DVD which you can pre-order from https://amzn.to/3GMdQjz

REVIEW: The Ice Demon - Starring Alina Babak, Olga Lomonosova and Aleksey Rozin

Review by Jon Donnis
It is that time of the week for a low budget horror film! This time we have The Ice Demon, a Russian horror film directed by Ivan Kapitonov and Cindy Robinson, and written by Natalya Dubovaya, Artem Mikhailov and Svyatoslav Podgaevskiy.

With multiple writers and directors you would think this film has every chance of being a hit!

The basic story follows two hikers who pitch their tent during a blizzard, while doing this they realise that they are trying to do so on top of a frozen solid dead guy. A classic mistake I am sure we have all made once in our life.

Once at the morgue they find out that the frozen dead body is of a man called Matvey isn't actually dead, and instead in a coma. The family of the man take him home. Coma man has been missing for a decade, his wife Tatyana has since remarried to a man called Misha.

As you can imagine, finding Matvey alive causes a lot of issues in the family, and taking him back to the family home to care for him is a big problem.

Every so often Matvey's body seems to come to life, I guess he is possessed by an Ice Demon?

Look, the problem here is that the poster and name of the film sort of promises an Ice Demon, just those alone and you would expect a monster horror film. Instead, we get a family drama, that beyond the start of the film and the end is rather dull.

I expected a monster film, but instead got a poorly dubbed snore fest.

The Good
The start is promising, there is a story to be told here, they just didn't want to tell the story that I am sure 99% of the viewers wanted.

The Bad
Very dark film throughout, dark as in you can't see anything, and it is rather dull.

Overall
They got this film wrong, the advertisement, the poster, the name, all of it is just wrong.

I score this film 2/10 and that is being generous.

REVIEW: Ambulance (2022) - Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González

Review by Jon Donnis
Ambulance is one of those films that comes out of nowhere, I saw no promotion for this film, no PR team got in contact with me, I had no idea it existed, and when I saw it Prime video, I thought I would give it a look. I thought it would be another low budget film. However, this film had a moderate budget of about $40m, is directed by Michael Bay who is known for outstanding action scenes, and has big name actor Jake Gyllenhaal in it.

Ambulance is based on a 2005 Danish film of the same name by Laurits Munch-Petersen and Lars Andreas Pedersen. The basic story sees two adoptive siblings turned bank robbers who hijack an ambulance and take two first responders' hostage.

War Vet Will Sharp, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in need of $230k for his wife's surgery, he reaches out to his adoptive brother Danny Sharp, played by Jake Gyllenhaal for help. Danny convinces Will to help with a $32m bank heist, although reluctant at first Will realises that this would help solve all his problems and agrees.

Everything is going to plan until Officer Zach, (Jackson White) approaches the bank, Danny pretends to work there, but unable to get Zach to leave, he lets him in to speak to the bank teller, who Zach wants to ask out on a date. Of course, things go wrong and Danny takes Officer Zach hostage.

Before you know it, there is a shootout with another officer, and the LAPD arrive and take out most of the gang, except for Danny and Will who manage to retreat to the garage area, Officer Zach gets shot, and put into an ambulance, Will and Danny try to escape, but find themselves surrounded by cops. They then hijack the Ambulance that Officer Zach is in, while he is being treated by EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González)

What follows is a truly nonstop, action packed chase with all manner of cops and experts trying to negotiate with the Ambulance, and ultimately try to stop them, all the while Officer Zach is in the back of the Ambulance being attended to by EMT Cam.

Garret Dillahunt as Captain Monroe is also a stand out performance as the main cop trying to stop them.

Ambulance is a classic Michael Bay film, lots of action, explosions, and even decent character development, both before the escape starts and during the chase itself.

The Good
Excellent action scenes, decent performances by all involved. A proper action-packed thriller, and chase film.

The Bad
Michael Bay loves his swooping camera shots, and a few of them mean the need for CGI and some of that CGI is pretty obvious, although it doesn't spoil the film in any way, I am always looking for perfection.

Overall
Thoroughly good action film. Worth a watch for any fan of the genre.

I score Ambulance a solid 8/10
