The Best Movie Moustaches

We don’t know about you but there’s something very special about a well-defined moustache in a movie, don’t you agree?

To mark the start of Movember, we’re celebrating some of our favourite facial fuzz featured in film. So whether you’re looking for a bit of inspiration as you cultivate your own facial hair, or want to remind yourself of these classic film moments, grab some snacks, raid the DVD shelf and settle in for a moustache themed Movie Weekender marathon….

Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat)
While we might all love Borat’s classic handlebar, spare a thought for Sasha Baron Cohen’s wife Isla Fisher, who said of the actor’s The Dictator beard, “The good news is the beard came off in the evening. So I did not have to look at the beard, unlike the Borat handlebar moustache which I was saddled with for months and months."

Ralph Fiennes (Grand Budapest Hotel)
There are 10 eye-catching (should that be teeth-catching?) beards and tashes in Grand Budapest Hotel, but Ralph Fiennes is one of the favourites. According to the film’s hair and make-up designer, it was based on Austrian-born actor Anton Walbrook and a variety of fakes were used before Fiennes grew the real deal.

Matt Dillon (There's Something About Mary)
A pencil moustache so slim it borders on John Waters territory. Well done to Matt Dillion for pulling off this tricky style with such aplomb. Metaphorically we mean - it’s real hair so pulling off is not possible.

Ben Stiller (Dodgeball)
While a moustache can provide sophistication, that’s not always the case. Not in comedy anyway. When Ben Stiller had to shoot a scene with his real-life wife Christine Taylor, he found she couldn’t stop laughing at his facial hair. Since it was a fake, hopefully he wasn’t too insulted.

Will Ferrell (Anchorman)
Where would Ron Burgundy be without his moustache? Will Ferrell’s glorious facial hair has made the iconic character a fancy dress favourite. But perhaps it’s better to avoid drinking milk in it…

Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz)
Hot Fuzz by name, hot fuzz by nature… well, if we’re talking about Paddy Considine’s facial hair anyway. While we give Considine full credit for his acting, the tash certainly helped him so convincingly portray a detective.

Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid)
They don’t grow them like they used to, do they? Robert Redford’s The Sundance Kid fuzz comes from a pre-ironic era, when tashes weren’t tainted by the 1980s adult industry.

Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds)
Brad Pitt sported this classic pencil so well, the style became known as ‘Aldo Raine’ in barbers after the film’s 2009 release. Extra kudos to the actor for keeping his facial hair for the entire Inglourious Basterds promo tour.

Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction)
True fact, Samuel L Jackson’s character was originally meant to rock a huge afro in this movie, but a production runner picked up the wrong wig from a store. Regardless of the hair style, this horseshoe moustache, paired with fine sideburns, is perfect for the character.

Sam Elliott (The Big Lebowski)
Sam Elliott has rocked some seriously awesome moustaches through his career, but this handlebar is a firm favourite. Along with the actor’s gravelly voice, it’s gained a legendary status. Hair goals indeed.

The Florida Project - Poster and Trailer

THE FLORIDA PROJECT, one of the breakout hits of Cannes, is released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland this Friday, by distributor Altitude Film Distribution.

Directed by Sean Baker, and co-written with Chris Bergoch, The Florida Project is Baker’s follow up to his 2015 award winning feature Tangerine, which he also co-wrote with Bergoch. The Florida Project stars Willem Dafoe (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Murder on the Orient Express) and features standout performances from newcomers Bria Vinaite, Brooklynn Prince and Valeria Cotto.

The Florida Project tells the story of Moonee (Brookynn Prince), a precocious six-year- old and her ragtag group of friends.  The children’s summer break is filled with wonder, mischief and adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times.

The story takes place just outside of Orlando, the vacation capital of the world and home to “The Most Magical Place on Earth.”  Along the main highway that runs through the land of theme parks and resorts, budget motels that once attracted tourists by exploiting the Disney mystique, now house homeless families.

Moonee and her twenty-two year old mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), live at one such establishment — The Magic Castle Motel.  The closest thing Moonee has to a father is Bobby (Willem Dafoe), the motel’s manager, a guarded and diligent man who is taunted by the children’s antics.  Halley has lost her job and a new girl the same age as Moonee has moved in at the motel next door - it's going to be an eventful summer.

June Pictures presents A Cre Film & Freestyle Pictures Company Production. Produced by Sean Baker, Chris Bergoch, Kevin Chinoy, Andrew Duncan, Alex Saks, Francesca Silvestri, Shih-Ching Tsou and executive produced by Darren Dean.

Running time: 112min    Certificate: 15

THE FLORIDA PROJECT will be released across the UK and Ireland by Altitude Film Distribution
on 10 November 2017.
