REVIEW: Boon (2022) - Starring Neal McDonough, Tommy Flanagan and Christiane Seidel

Review by Jon Donnis
Neal McDonough is one of those actors who seems to pop up a lot, but never as the lead. You will instantly recognise him from Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash as well as Yellowstone and countless other TV shows.

Here though Neal McDonough stars as Nick Boon, a hitman with a heart trying to atone for previous evils. Yes, I know, it is a story that has been told countless times.

Boon previously worked as a hitman/mercenary for a crime syndicate, but he is on the run, and hiding out in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest. Straight away he finds himself being targeted, so ends up in a fire fight with someone sent to kill him, while killing the assailent, Boon is shot, he wakes up in a cabin after being found by a widowed pastor, Catherine, played by Christiane Seidel and her son.

Boon soon finds out that the Catherine is living in fear of the local crime boss Mr. Fitzgerald, played by Tommy Flanagan, who is using her land to conceal a tunnel where he is transporting goods.

After one of Mr. Fitzgerald's henchmen tries to rape Catherine, her son fetchs Boon, and he beats up the thug, and now Boon finds himself in a tough position. Does he keep running from the FBI and specially FBI agent, played by Demetrius Grosse, as well as his former crime syndicate colleagues, or does he stick around and help Catherine and her Son as they are targeted by Mr. Fitzgerald.

Of course he sticks around.

What follows is perhaps a bit predictable, but still a quite enjoyable action film. There are a few moments when not only Boon, but also some of the bad guys make stupid decisions, but is there any film that doesn't give the bad guy chance to kill their nemesis only to throw it away by either talking to much, or demanding hand to hand combat?

The Good
The set pieces are all well done, Neal McDonough is great as our anti-hero, and Christiane Seidel is convincing as the Widow and Paster who just wants to be left alone.

The Bad
There is a distinct lack of character development, and perhaps some more time could have been taken there to give the viewer more of a connection to the characters they are supposed to be getting behind. Also the FBI agent, played by Demetrius Grosse is a really good character but we dont get to see much of him until the end.

Overall
A fun action film, that is perhaps slightly paint by numbers at times, but still delivers on the action scenes.

I score Boon a fair 7/10
