REVIEW: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024 Film) - Starring Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson and Alex Pettyfer

Review by Jon Donnis
"The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" is a rollicking adventure that gleefully blends historical fiction with action-packed comedy, delivering a high-octane romp through WWII-era espionage. Directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, the film takes liberal liberties with historical events, crafting a wildly entertaining narrative centered around the creation of the first special forces unit under Winston Churchill's clandestine directive.

Based on the book "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The Mavericks Who Plotted Hitler's Downfall, Giving Birth to Modern-Day Black Ops" by Damien Lewis - Read that at https://amzn.to/3UnyC1b

Set against the backdrop of a war-torn Europe in 1941, the film plunges viewers into a world of daring sabotage missions and unconventional warfare. The plot follows Brigadier Colin Gubbins (Cary Elwes) as he orchestrates Operation Postmaster, a top-secret mission to disrupt Nazi U-Boat operations. With a motley crew of rogues and misfits at his disposal, including the charismatic Gus March-Phillips (played with charm and wit by Henry Cavill), the stage is set for a daring escapade filled with humor, suspense, and explosive action.

One of the film's strongest assets is its stellar cast, who inject the proceedings with charisma and chemistry. Henry Cavill shines as the roguish Gus, delivering a performance that balances comedic timing with genuine heroism. Eiza González sizzles as the seductive Marjorie Stewart, while Alan Ritchson steals scenes as the enigmatic Anders Lassen. The ensemble cast brings a lively energy to the film, making each character memorable in their own right.

Ritchie's signature style is on full display, with kinetic camerawork, rapid-fire editing, and sharp dialogue infusing the film with a sense of dynamism. The action sequences are expertly choreographed, blending slapstick humor with thrilling suspense. Christopher Benstead's jazzy score adds another layer of excitement, creating a lively atmosphere that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

However, the film is not without its flaws. While the narrative is engaging and fast-paced, it does follow a somewhat predictable trajectory, and character development takes a backseat to the frenetic pace of the plot. Some viewers may find the historical inaccuracies distracting, but for those willing to suspend disbelief, "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" offers a delightfully absurd take on wartime heroics.

In summary, "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" is a thoroughly entertaining ride that blends humour, action, and historical intrigue into a cinematic cocktail that goes down smooth. While it may not be the most faithful portrayal of WWII history, it more than makes up for it with its infectious energy and irreverent spirit. For fans of Guy Ritchie's signature style and audiences looking for a good time at the movies, this film delivers in spades.

I score "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" a solid 8 out of 10.

The Coffee Table, La Mesita

By Jon Donnis
Step into the twisted world of "The Coffee Table" (aka La Mesita), a spine-chilling horror experience from Spain that's ready to send shivers down your spine. Directed by Caye Casas (known for "Killing God") and co-written with Cristina Borobia, this film has already made waves on the festival circuit and is gearing up for its UK debut, courtesy of Second Sight Films.

Described as "An unsettling descent into absolute madness and misery" by Guy at the Movies, and hailed as "A genre-leaping marvel" by Projected Figures, "The Coffee Table" promises to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Set for digital release on 20 May 2024, this film is not for the faint of heart.

David Pareja ("Amigo") and Estefanía de los Santos ("Jaulas") deliver jaw-dropping performances as Jesus and María, a couple grappling with the strains of a newborn baby on their relationship. Their journey takes a dark turn during a seemingly innocuous shopping trip for furniture, where a simple disagreement over a coffee table spirals into a tragic event that will haunt them forever.

Joined by Josep Maria Riera, Claudia Riera, and Eduardo Antuña, "The Coffee Table" promises an excruciatingly uncomfortable experience with a pitch-black sense of humor. Critics have hailed it as "an unrelenting, bleak domestic drama" (Screen Zealots) and "an exercise in dread and empathy" (Scully Vision).

Prepare yourself for a harrowing ride into the depths of human darkness with "The Coffee Table." But be warned: once you sit down with this film, you may never look at your furniture the same way again.

REVIEW: Arthur the King (2024 Film) - Starring Mark Wahlberg, Simu Liu, and Juliet Rylance

Review by Jon Donnis
"Arthur the King" embarks on a thrilling journey that not only traverses the physical landscapes of the Dominican Republic but also delves deep into the emotional terrain of human determination and companionship. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones and written by Michael Brandt, this adventure film, based on the true story chronicled in Mikael Lindnord's book, "Arthur - The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home," is a testament to the extraordinary bond forged between man and canine amidst the rigors of an epic race.

At the heart of the narrative lies the tale of Michael Light (Mark Wahlberg), a once-prominent adventure racer whose career takes a downturn after a fateful decision during a race in Costa Rica. Despite setbacks and self-doubt, Light yearns for redemption and seizes one last chance at glory by assembling a team, including Olivia (Nathalie Emmanuel), Chik (Ali Suliman), and Leo (Simu Liu), for the Adventure Racing World Championship.

The team's dynamics are tested from the outset, particularly with Leo's inclusion against Light's initial reluctance. However, it's the unexpected addition of Arthur, a street dog from Ecuador, that reshapes their journey. Arthur's unwavering loyalty and bravery transform him from a mere spectator to an integral part of the team, earning him the moniker "Arthur the King."

As they navigate treacherous terrain and confront their own demons, the team's camaraderie deepens, fueled by Arthur's presence. Moments of peril, such as Arthur's near-drowning, underscore the sacrifices made in the pursuit of victory. Yet, it's these very challenges that redefine their understanding of success, emphasizing the importance of compassion and resilience over mere triumph.

Mark Wahlberg's portrayal of Light is a tour de force, capturing the character's evolution from a disillusioned athlete to a compassionate leader. Supported by a talented ensemble cast, including Juliet Rylance as Light's wife Helena and Bear Grylls in a memorable cameo, the performances elevate the emotional resonance of the film.

"Arthur the King" resonates on multiple levels, offering not just pulse-pounding adventure but also poignant moments of introspection and connection. Viewers are treated to a rollercoaster of emotions, from heart-stopping suspense to heartwarming camaraderie, as the story unfolds.

What truly sets "Arthur the King" apart is its celebration of the human-animal bond. Arthur's journey from a stray dog to a beloved companion symbolizes the transformative power of love and loyalty. Dog lovers, in particular, will find themselves captivated by Arthur's antics and touched by his unwavering devotion.

In essence, "Arthur the King" is more than just a film; it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human heart and the enduring bond between man and his four-legged friend. With its riveting storyline, stellar performances, and profound themes, this cinematic gem is a must-see for audiences of all ages.

From its breathtaking cinematography to its poignant storytelling, "Arthur the King" is a triumph of the human spirit. As such, it deserves nothing less than the highest praise. I wholeheartedly recommend this film and score it a resounding 9.5 out of 10.
